The next day, against Madame Pomfrey’s better judgment, Hermione insisted on attending class. She was not going to let Harry and Ron get the best of her. Mione was keen to keep going and she wasn’t going to let this destroy her life, at least not yet. Her mother had taught her never to give up, and as she thought of her mother, she intended to follow that. In class Hermione seemed very depressed and distracted which gave Severus the perfect opportunity to give her a detention, but not until the right moment. Severus was required to watch her anyway, and he was damned if he was going to go to her. Nothing was doing it; Hermione just wasn’t there. Not even Snape yelling at Draco for putting ice down another Slytherin’s back could tear Hermione away from the that pain she was feeling. Snape began to feel that Hermione was loosing hope, she usually took great pleasure in seeing Draco Malfoy in trouble, but today, she just sighed.
Harry and Ron were sitting next to Hermione, one on each side, essentially trapping her. Hermione had not, of course, asked for this, she had been the first one to the room that morning, and sat in a seat closer to the front, but to no avaihen hen the boys got there they enclosed her, not letting her get away. The two boys insisted on talking to Hermione. Snape new that to punish them would make things worse, and that certainly, he was on thin ice already, but he felt the need to say something.
“Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley,” Snape growled, “Is it entirely necessary to get in the way of Miss Granger’s academic accomplishments?”
Hermione paused, looking up slightly at Snape. Did he just present her with a compliment? Snape never complimented anyone let alone Miss-Know-It-All Granger. Never the less, this also gave Hermione some small hope to carry on, even if it was Snape.
As Snape stalked away he heard Harry whisper, “You’ll pay for that Hermione.” Snape knew what that meant.
So Snape continued, “However, Miss Granger, since you feel that you do not need to pay attention, I will see you in my dungeons tonight for a detention. This made Ron and Harry quite pleased with themselves but Ginny, who had no idea about her brother’s actions, wanted to know why she had just let Snape abuse her like that.
Hermione just shrugged as Snape yelled again, “Miss Weasley, be quiet or you will join Miss Granger in detention.” Snape didn’t want to give Ginny a detention but he did want her to shut up.
Hermione sat in her room; she had about five minutes until her detention with Professor Snape. She was tired and in desperate need of some rest. Since there was no pepper-up potion handy, she decided to opt for the next best thing, so Hermione got up and put her headphones tightly in her ears and began to walk down to the dungeons.
“Ever close your eyes,
Ever stop and listen?
Ever feel alive, and you’othiothing missing?
You don’t need a reason,
Let the rain go on and on.”
When Hermione reached Snape’s office she felt much better, as good as anyone in her position could feel. She paused her music, knocked on the door, and waited for permission to enter, and turned her music up full blast again.
“Let the rain fall down,
Everywhere around you.
Give into it now,
Let the day surround you,
You don’t need a reason,
Let the rain go on and on.”
Although Snape had never taken Muggle Studies in his time at Hogwarts, he had more or less become slightly interested in their contraptions.
“Miss Granger,” Snape said, acknowledging her, “What Muggle device do you have today?”
Hermione of course had turned off the music by now, and had magically turned her portable CD player into a stereo.
“This,” said Hermione, quite surprised by his lack of cruelty and sarcasm, “is a CD player, or stereo. It is used to play music from a CD.” Hermione gave him the Enya CD for closer observation.
Snape looked puzzled, “You can fit people in here?”
Hermione laughed, for a brilliant Professor, he sure was clueless. “No Professor,” she said holding back another giggle, “It’s a recording, the real voice is recorded onto the CD so it can be later played back.” Snape still looked confused, “Ok, I’ll play you some, I think you might like it. It certainly puts me a good mood,” Soon a beautiful voice and melody filled the air.
“Lazy old day,
Rolling away,
Dreaming the day away.
Don’t want to go,
Now that I’m in the flow,
Crazy, amazing day.”
Snape, for once in his life, actually looked impressed, as well as intrigued. “I like it Hermione.” Whoa, hold up, thought Hermione. Snape has just used her first name. He had called her Hermione. “Could I possibly borrow this Hermione?”
Hermione was shocked, that was twice in five minutes. “Of course Professor, but not for too long, as its my favourite.” Snape smiled at her before placing the Muggle device away, he would figure out how to use it later. Now he had more important things to attend to.
“Hermione, come and sit down.” Snape said almost politely. “I know that you’re going through a terrible ordeal right now and I do um - ” Snape hesitated, “apologise for my behaviour that night, I was just a tad shocked still from what had happened. I have been…” but Snape was cut off before he could finish, by a child of no more than thirteen.
“Professor Snape, Sir, you must come quickly, it’s Dumbledore Sir, he’s, I think he’s…”
Professor Snape wasted no time; he left the two standing there whilst he ran up to the Headmaster’s office.
Hermione watched the boy that she had never seen before. What house was he in? Before Hermione got to ask anymore questions the little boy transfigured himself. Then, standing in front of her was a very angry looking Voldemort.
