Chapter 3

Bound In Time

Chapter 3

Thea was up and cooking, she loved the Saturday brunches she hosted each week, as did the rest of the residents in Croft House. Most of the other residents were pretty old looked forward to the social brunches, when they would all meet up on the pretty terrace which stood directly behind the house.

During the summer a charm would be cast to cocoon them in a slightly shaded area, and then in winter it would be as warm as it was inside the building.

Setting out numerous platters of food on the table Thea cast another charm which would keep the hot items hot and the cold ones chilled, these were indeed extremely helpful charms which she had learned from a book called ‘How to be a Domestic Witch’ by Molly Weasley.

She had learned from the information about the author in the front of the book that she was a housewitch who apparently had a large brood of children; she had fought in the war, even killing a much feared and insane witch who was second in command to Voldemort himself. She had been asked several times to write a biography, and refused each time, finally relenting and writing a book aimed at helping a housewitch be the very best wife and mother she could.

This seemed a somewhat antiquated notion to Thea; it fell along the lines of the old adage of the little woman having her husband’s pipe and slippers ready when he returned home. But she knew that for many witches, nothing was more important to them than being a good wife and mother, indeed where would the world be without mothers to raise the next generation?

Still she had bought the book and used many of the time saving charms, such as waste baskets that attracted your trash, as long as you threw it in the general direction of the bin it never missed, windows which never required cleaning and charms which allowed the children to play outdoors even on a rainy day without becoming wet – this of course was the charm Thea used over their terrace during brunch, it simply created a magical roof over the diners, it was in effect an invisible conservatory.

Of course many households of long standing had house elves to carry out general maintenance and chores, but Thea liked to carry out certain tasks herself. Such as cooking, in which she found a great deal of joy.

Each weekend at 11am on Saturday the entire building would congregate out on the terrace and eat, chat and catch up on the general hubbub of each others lives. Thea always cooked a huge selection of dishes from all over the world, as many of the witches and wizards living in Croft House were themselves from all over the world.

Max was a very proper English gentleman; Gillian was a 20year old American studying in England. Alexandra was a middle aged Greek Cypriot witch who could talk your ears off. In total there were 12 living in the large house, each had their own self contained flat, all of which were considerably larger than it would have appeared possible from the outside. They had their own floo connection in the shared lobby, warded doors to prevent unwanted guests and of course the owlery on the roof for mail.

The house was situated in a magical street in London, all of the residents were witches and wizards who worked in muggle London or in the Ministry, or like Max were retired.

Brunch on Saturday was the only time you could get the entire household in one place so it was special to them all.

Thea served breakfast and lunch dishes from all around the world, from toast and marmalade, pancakes, fresh fruits and Greek yoghurt, even bacon and eggs. The whole table was groaning with platters of hot food, chilled fruits and juices along with pots of tea and coffee. Once satisfied Thea glanced at the clock and noting it was 10:55 so she went out onto the terrace and poured herself a large mug of steaming coffee, sitting in one of the chairs with her feet curled under her she sipped her coffee whilst watching a bird bathing in the garden fountain and waiting for the hungry hoards to descend on the table.

Meanwhile, in the flat across the hall…

“Max… it’s good to see you old friend” the tall wizard walked through the door into his friends flat.

“Lucius, a pleasure as always”

The two men shook hands briefly before Max pulled the younger man into a quick embrace. Lucius was somewhat uncomfortable by this too familiar gesture, but since the war he was trying to be less cold and more open to things like real friendship.

“How is that youngster of yours?” Max asked as he let go of Lucius.

“Oh he is fine, hardly young anymore” Lucius responded with a sigh as he dropped into a large soft armchair “he makes me feel older everyday.”

Max laughed and sat in the opposite chair “try being my age and you will know old, I have aches in places I never knew I had places my boy”.

“Just how old are you these days Max?”

“Oh as old as my tongue and older than my teeth” Max replied with a cheeky wink.

Lucius smiled, he had known Max since he was a small boy and the older wizard had been a friend of his father. It always struck Lucius how two such different men could be good friends; where his father was cold, domineering and unbending, Max was warm, affectionate and understanding. So as he grew himself and following his father’s death, Lucius had drifted into a comfortable friendship with Max.

“We have an invitation for brunch this morning if you wish to come?”

“Oh, I don’t know, I am not keen on…” Lucius faltered uncharacteristically unsure.

“Lucius, they will not bite, you have to face more people one day. Trust me not everyone in the wizarding world thinks you are the bad guy”.

“Oh, no… just half of them” Lucius responded coldly.

“Don’t be daft, you will come to brunch, meet my neighbours, let down your hair – metaphorically I mean – and you WILL have a good time!”

“Is that an order?” Lucius asked as the clock out in the lobby started to chime.

“Yes it is! And that is to tell us dinner is ready… well brunch… come on and don’t look so bloody surly”. Max laughed.

Leaving the flat the two men stepped out into the lobby and went out through the french windows at the back of the building. Max led Lucius out onto the terrace; they were the first to arrive, except of course for Thea who was sitting sipping her coffee.

Feeling the hair on the back of her neck prickle, Thea took a deep breath and turned to see who was approaching, her eyes first settled on Max “morning, I hope you and your friend are….” She noticed Lucius standing with the older wizard and felt like a bolt of lightning had shot through her very soul “hungry…” she gave herself a mental shake “as usual I went totally overboard”.

If Max noticed anything he did not comment “Lucius this is my extremely lovely neighbour Thea, who happens to be the best cook in London”

“Cook?” Lucius enquired, “You cook?”

“No… the food arrived by magic…” Thea replied sarcastically.

“I meant, your house elf didn’t, you did….” Lucius went quiet for a moment “I will shut up now shall I?”

“Good idea my boy” Max laughed “Thea, this is a very old friend of mine, Lucius Malfoy”.

Thea looked thoughtful for a moment “Malfoy?” she asked, obviously recognising the name.

Seeing this pause for thought, Lucius immediately went on the defensive “yes Malfoy, and yes, THAT Malfoy” he said coldly, fire burning in his usually cold grey eyes.

Looking at him rather shocked Thea said “I was about to say that I recognised your name from the Ministry, you work there also don’t you?”

Lucius was taken aback, he had been expecting yet another person to realise he was a former death eater and be afraid of him, but she seemed oblivious to this past and he almost sighed with relief.

As the others arrived for brunch and introductions were made, everyone started to take a seat and dig into the mountains of food Thea had prepared. Lucius found he was sitting next to Thea, helping himself to a slice of toast “so you work at the Ministry too then?” he asked, trying to converse like a normal person would.

“Yes” she replied as she reached for the butter, she leant closer to Lucius and whispered “I know just who you are Mr Malfoy and no… I am not afraid of you…”
