Sirius smiled as a small pop was heard near them followed by a tiny plop. Sirius looked over and paled consisderably. There was a letter on the table. He reconized the envelop his throat suddenly constricting. Harry glanced up to Sirius, having missed the sound of the letter appearing.
"Sirius? What's wrong?" Sirius reached over picking up the letter as it had an Azkaban return address but it was addressed to Harry.
"This is for you Harry." Harry looks at the letter for a moment before taking it.
"It's...from Azkaban...does the wizarding world have letterbombs?" Sirius snorts slightly.
"No but the wards wouldnt have let it in if it was dangerous. Open it." He was slightly curious as to who was writing to his godson from the prison.
"Yeah. Okay." Harry breaks the wax seal on the envelope and pulls out a sheaf of slightly smudged paper.
He glances down to the signature and nearly drops the letter.
"It...it's from Bellatrix!" Sirius felt his stomach hit his toes as he nearly ripped the letter out of Harry's hands.
"Why is that deranged psychotic bitch of a cousin writing you!" Sirius was now very worried.
"Hey!" Harry resisted the urge to snatch the letter back.
"I want to read it. I want to know what she could possibly want to say to me, of all people." Sirius paused for a moment then handed Harry back the letter.
"Ok what does she want." Harry took the letter and glanced over it before deciding to read it out loud.
"Well..."
Inside Azkaban Bella was just barly able to keep herself from going even more crazy. The Dementors seemed to delight in staying close to Lucius and her cell. She could see that Lucius was feeling the same effects as her.
Once in awhile they were given some paper to write on. She had found out that Harry Potter's birthday passed. How she knew this was because the Dark Mark burned with her lords anger. He must have not been at the muggles home. She decided that she wanted him to know the secret she knew. Slowly she began to write out her letter. Lucius watched Bellatrix for a moment before speaking.
"Who are you writing to?" Bellatrix sighs as she looked at Lucius.
"Harry Potter..." was all she said as she began to write.
Dear Harry
I know that you might not want to read this but it is important that you do. Today is your 17th birthday i must say it is amazing that anyone gets through puberty. But you have handled yourself rather gracefully. Your parents are very proud of you and the man you have become. Soon you will find a woman you want to spend the rest of your life with and have plenty of children. I must cut this short... the dementors are coming around. Thank you for reading.
Signed
Bellatrix Lestrange
Lucius shook his head and decided not to ask. Harry frowned at the letter, puzzled, before turning to Sirius.
"Why should she care about my birthday? Sirius blinked as he reread the letter.
"Um Harry she said your parents are proud of you... in the present tense." Harry shrugged.
"She's in Azkaban. And she was already nuts when she went in."
"Maybe she's seeing people." Sirius bites his lip.
"She may be nuttier than a pay day but ... she doesnt see people she knows are dead." Harry looked back at the letter, rereading it.
"So...what? Do you think she's trying to mess with me? Maybe she thinks I'll go off looking for my parents and make myself an easy target." Harry paused as he thought this over, but he couldn't imagine it being true. Bellatrix seemed more like a straight-forward action type of person.
Not one to send off beguiling letters. Sirius set the letter down as he sat down in one of the chairs.
"My cousin may be abit off her rocker but... she isnt one to skem she just goes for the throat." Sirius was getting more and more worried.
If what she said ment that Harry's parents were alive he would have to wonder about his cousins sanity. He had seen James and Lily's bodies in the cofins.
"But...but they can't be alive...c-can they?" Harry hardly let himself hope.
"If they're alive....No. I won't believe my parents would leave me with the Dursleys!" Harry ran a hand through his hair, agitated color rising in his cheeks. Sirius looked at him and rested his head on it.
"Write her back... ask her yourself."
"I..." Harry paused, deep in thought.
"Yeah. Yeah, I guess I should." With the decision made, Harry quickly gathered a quill and parchment.
"I don't even know where to start."
"Just let the words flow through you." Sirius said as he rested a hand on Harry's shoulder. Harry nodded and set to work.
Dear Bellatrix, he started, then changed his mind. He spelled the ink away and began again. Sirius watched as he silently wondered how his cousin was handling Azkaban.
Bellatrix,
I was surprised to get your letter. Even more surprised to read the way you spoke of my parents. You mention them in the present tense. Does that mean what I take it to mean? Do you believe they're still alive? My first thought was that you must be lying for some reason, but I can't really think you would do that. So tell me what you know of my parents. It's very important to me...
Signed
Harry.
Harry turned to Sirius.
"How's that?" Sirius smiles and kisses Harry's head.
"Better than even most authors." Sirius takes it and puts it in an envelop and sends it off. Harry watches Sirius sending the letter, his mind spinning.
"Do you really think she meant...I mean...how could they be alive? And why wouldn't Dumbledore know?"
"If they are alive... and Dumbledore knew im going to start to wonder the same thing." Sirius said as he escorted Harry up to his room.
Harry sat on his bed, still thinking. After a moment, he looked up at Sirius.
"I don't really know anything about Bellatrix but what I've seen, and that isn't much. What...what's she like?" Sirius blinked rapidly at Harry's sudden curiousity about his cousin. He sat down gulpping slightly.
"Well she is i believe the olddest Black sister. Narcissa Draco's mother is her baby sister. When she was younger she wasnt very social she more liked to protect Narcissa. When we got to Hogwarts she and i would fight over grades. She called me a blood traitor since i was put into Gryfindoor."
"She must have gotten along with your mother then." Harry grinned wryly. Sirius chuckles thickly.
"Actually my mother hated her. Said she was too Black like to really be a Black... i think that was her way of saying Bella was creepy as hell." Harry chucked as well on hearing this.
"I know she was..." he paused, unsure if he really wanted to voice his opinion to his often hotheaded godfather.
"Go ahead Harry... just say what you want." Sirius knew his godson was too kind to hurt anyone.
"Well. I know she was...er. Crazy. But did you ever...I mean. She was..." Harry stopped for a moment, his voice going low, almost inaudible.
"She was very...um. Pretty." Sirius nearly fell off the bed at his godsons comment.
"P...Pretty?" he studdered as he looked to his godson.
"Are you attracted to oldder women Harry?" Harry quickly stood, backing slightly away from Sirius with his eyes wide.
"N-no! I never- never...I mean...I...she's..." Harry hung his head, wrapping his arms around himself and nodding.
"Y-yeah. Kind of. I'm sorry...is that...is that disgusting?" Sirius stood up walking over.
"No Harry thats not disgusting im a little shocked that you admit to thinking that my cousin is pretty." Sirius helpped him back to the bed. Harry sat down and ran a hand over his face.
"I didn't mean to notice. I mean I wasn't *looking*, you know? It just kind of...hit me."
"Its alright... truth be told i have a tiny crush on Minerva." Sirius chuckled as a letter appeared on the table near the bed. Harry squeezed his eyes shut.
"Oh ew! I absolutely did *not* need to know that!" He laughed brightly, pushing playfully at Sirius' arm. Sirius laughs hard as he sees the letter.
"Ah a response from your Juilet."
"Ju- oh, no. She's- I just...She's not my Juliet!" Harry rubbed a hand over his red face and grabbed the letter. He opened it quickly, refusing to meet Sirius' eyes.
Dear Harry
I was pleasently surprised that you wanted to reply to my letter. I did mention your parents in a present tense. They... well they are alive. Dumbledore has lied to everyone. Your parents are alive and kicking. Kicking angry that Dumbledore has been streading lies about them. I cant really explain but if at all possible i would tell you in person... thank you for writing me... its nice to talk to someone other than my brother in law.
Signed
Bella
Harry's face went white.
"Dumbledore doesn't lie!" He turned to Sirius.
"She has to be lying! Dumbledore wouldn't hide something like that from me!" But Harry's voice sounded desperate even to his own ears.
Sirius was dumbstruck by his cousins words. Though it sounded blastfomus it did kinda make sence.
"Harry... did you ever tell Dumbledore about your treatment at the Dursley's?"
"I..." Harry lowered his head, biting his lip.
"I didn't want to worry him..."
"I thought Hermione had, though..." Sirius nods as he thoguht back to his trial.
If Dumbledore had spoken at his trail then he wouldnt have been arrested. Also other things were strang about James and Lily's funeral.
"What?" Harry asked, noticing Sirius' thoughtful expression.
"What are you thinking?"
"Well when your parents had their funeral i noticed that James had a scar on his temple that wasnt there before. Also it looked like Lily had a broken nose even though she wouldnt have fallen on her face. Also my trail i was with Dumbledore the night your parents were killed and he could have alabied me but he refused." Sirius said as he was now starting to believe that his cousin wasnt so batty.
"Re-...He *refused*?!" Harry's hands clenched.
"I could have been living here this whole time! O-or...if my parent's really are..." He wrapped his arms around himself, bending forward and putting his head on his knees.
Thoughts and memories were flooding through him. Remembering times Dumbledore had been less than his benevolent self and beginning to make connections that disturbed him more than he cared to admit.
"My whole...my whole life was dictated by him...everything." Sirius gently pulled him close petting his hair.
"Calm down Harry... im sorry... it might be true..." After several moments, Harry sat up slowly. His eyes were narrow and his fists clenched.
He turned to Sirius, and the look of anger and determination in his eyes was enough to make a grown man turn tail and run.
"I want to know what really happened the night my parents supposedly died." Sirius looked at him as he raised an eyebrow.
"I dont know how we are going to find out... wait there is someone who would know but i really hate to ask him." Harry didn't hesitate.
"Who?" "Snape... he might know." Sirius stands up.
"Come on we have to fire call him." Harry's determination faltered briefly at the mention of his hated potions master.
"Er...Snape?"
"Yes he is the only one that is on Dumbledores side and Voldemort's side who would know what really happened." Sirius said as he turnes toward the door. Harry hesitates a moment before following.
Sirius goes to the fireplace and calls for Snape at Hogwarts. Harry stands to the side of the fireplace, just out of view, and watches. Snape's head appeared in the fire, looking as though he smelled something nasty.
"What do you want, Black?"
"Get in here Snape we need to talk to you now." Sirius said as he felt the urge to hurl.
Snape sneered at Sirius.
"I do not have time for your adolescent idiocies, Black. Unlike you, I am busy *working*. What do you want?"
"It involves your precious Lily." Sirius said as he knew full well Snapes love for Harry's mother. Snape's eyes narrowed dangerously before his head disappeared from the fire.
A moment later, the imposing professor stepped through the fire, his expression thunderous.
"How dare you speak her name! What could you possibly have to say of her?"
"I want you to tell me what happened the night of Lily and JAmes's death or suppoused death. And dont even try to lie." Snape hissed venomously at Sirius.
"You know all you ever needed to know, cur." Sirius glares at him.
"Cut the crap Snape. My cousin told us that Lily and James are alive so dont even try lying." Snape's eyes widened.
"Bellatrix?"
"Yes we know shes back in Azkaban now spill it. Is she lying or is she telling the truth?" Sirius was getting tired of Snapes unwillingness to talk.
The potions master glanced around, finally noticing Harry. He sneered, but it lacked the power it usually had and Snape sighed.
"They are not dead." Harry exploded into motion, instantly in front of Snape, with the older man's robes fisted in his hands.
"Where are they! Why didn't you tell me?!" Sirius catches him and pulls him back.
"Harry calm down! Snape where are they?"
"If you fail to control yourself, Mr. Potter," Snape growled,
"You will learn nothing." When it became apparent that Harry would remain still for the moment, he continued.
"I was not told of their location. I know only that they were marked for death. Several Deatheaters were assigned to remove them from danger before Dumbledore's arrival. They were unable to get to the child-" Snape waves a dismissive hand at Harry.
"In time." Sirius nods as he holds Harry tight.
"Who would know where they are? Would Bella or Narcissa know?" Sirius asked as he was also slightly anxious to see his old friends. Snape nodded.
"I believe the LeStranges and Malfoys were among those chosen to retrieve the Potters. It is likely they would know their location." Sirius nods as he bites his lip.
"The rest of the Malfoy's are in hiding and the only one we can contact is Bella..." Sirius said as he looked up at Snape.
"Thank you Snape for helpping us." Snape wrinkled his nose.
"I have done nothing of the kind. Now. If you will excuse me." He grabs a handful of floo powder and is gone in an instant of roaring flames.
Sirius sighed as he gently hugged Harry close.
"Go upstairs and write to Bella ask her where your parents are." Harry nods, but doesn't move for a moment.
"Sirius...if Dumbledore set this up...it...it makes him my enemy, doens't it? I mean. Even Voldemort's afraid of him."
"It is correct... i never thought i would ever think of Dumbledore as evil but... the only reason i can think of that would make him want to hurt you would be that he wanted you weak enough to depend on him." Sirius tightened his hold on Harry.
"But doesn't that...make Voldemort...the good guy?" Harry bit his lip, not wanting to believe his world had changed so drastically in only a couple hours.
It was a strange thought... But it would seem Voldemort was a good guy in the sence that he protected Lily and James.
"I would say yes... Now go on."
"Right." Harry went straight up to his room and began another letter.
Bellatrix.
I must admit that I am very confused at what I've learned so far. Someone reliable has just confirmed that you were telling the truth. Please, Bellatrix, please tell me where my parents are and how I can get to them. I have to know if my suspicions are correct about the man I've so far trusted with my life. Harry folded his letter carefully and brought it downstairs to Sirius.
"Here." Sirius takes the letter and sends it out.
"Go and rest Harry ill wake you up if i get a return letter." Harry nodded quietly and returned to his room. Once there, though, he found he couldn't sleep.
He lay in his bed staring at the ceiling and thinking about what he would do if Dumbledore found out what he'd learned.
