Snake Food

“Hermione, you’re a bloody genius!” Severus breathed softly as he watched the giant snake coiling behind Voldemort’s throne. His Death Eater mask hid his expression as he leaned against a wall, ignoring the noise of the revel going on in the large ballroom. He could hardly wait to see what happened next…

Grimmuald Place, four months ago…

Severus looked aghast at the former Know-it-all before him. “You can’t be serious? That’s grotesque!”

“Undoubtedly, Professor, but it would work. Harry already has a link to both Voldemort and to Nagini, his familiar.” Hermione said calmly. If her face was just slightly green at the thought, he didn’t comment. She continued “The only Horcrux left is Nagini herself, since Harry was technically dead for at least one minute when Ron pulled him out of that pond in the Forest of Dean. Suggest to the Dark Lord that Nagini be fed an Engorgement solution to make her bigger and stronger, more resistant to spells, and offer to make it yourself. Use Harry’s blood instead of the standard Manticora venom and the snake will grow larger, but then become attuned to Harry instead of Voldemort.”

Severus blinked. “He’ll lose control of the snake, then.” He leaned against the counter in the kitchen. “I’m not sure I want to be around when she starts randomly crushing people.”

Hermione smiled, “It won’t be random. One of the peculiarities of her species is that they prefer to eat other snakes…or generally reptiles.” It was not a nice smile

Severus gave a small shudder at the irony of the thought. “And then we can finally let everyone know about us. We can be together openly, at last?” He pulled her closer in the shadows of the kitchen.

“At last, my love.” She stroked a hand over his chest and then kissed him. “Here’s a vial of Harry’s blood; if he ever finds out I’ve been siphoning him in his sleep, I won’t have to worry about the Dark Lord, that’s for sure. Harry will kill me himself.” She handed him a glass flask, securely sealed and labeled ‘Manticora Venom” in black ink.

“Forgive the pun, love, but you should have been a Slytherin.” He chuckled slightly, and then looked up as they heard a sound from the hallway. In a moment, he was gone, faded into the shadows beyond the back door.

When Harry entered the kitchen he saw Hermione digging through the cupboard, looking for a midnight snack, and he thought nothing of it.

The Dark Lord’s Sanctum, present time…

Voldemort was pleased with his followers. The screams and laughter as they variously tortured Muggles, drank to excess, and more or less debauched themselves were quite relaxing. He was also quite pleased with the results of Snape’s special potion for his familiar. The python, already large for her species, was now something over twenty feet long and resistant to almost all standard hexes or offensive spells. He’d even adjusted his strategy for the final battle to include her new talents.

He barely noticed when the screams in the room changed slightly, until Bellatrix shrieked and pointed behind him. He lazily turned his head to see Nagini’s dark, unblinking eyes staring into his, her preternaturally long tongue flicking as she registered his scent. “Hello, my pet. Are you hungry?”

Famous last words, as the Muggles say.

It was every bit as grotesque as Severus had thought it would be. Nagini had lunged, whipping her massive coils around the reptilian Voldemort and then squeezing. Hard. The snapping of his brittle bones could be heard like gunshots over the yells of spells from his loyal Death Eaters. They tried to kill her and free their leader, they really did. But of course the magically enhanced serpent was immune, just as her current snack had wanted her to be.

Far away in Grimmuald Place, Harry Potter was sitting in the library, his eyes glazed, a soft hissing of Parseltongue issuing from his lips. He was deep in a trance, seeing things from the snake’s point of view and urging her on. Hermione had told him what she and Snape were doing and had helped him speed up his control of the familiar, turning her into his most effective weapon and spy.

When the giant serpent had finally gotten his scaly, twitching feet down her maw, Severus waited until the lump in her midsection quit wriggling before he took a sword from a display on the wall and drove it through the snake’s skull, pinning her to the parquet floor.

It was over. The Wizarding World was free, and he was, as well. Time to go to his witch.
