Chapter Three

Hi! Thanks you to all those who sent out lovely, SUPPORTIVE reviews. Keep them coming in.

emer- Excuse me? "Awful"? That's it? Aren't you going to tell me why you find this story (all of two chapters before this point) awful? I find your review lacking and a clear sign that you are a judgmental fool with no skill or artistry with the English language. And as such you might consider reading something more on your level-- like a kindergarden primer. Because much like a child that would use such with their limited vocabulary, you need to learn how to use your words. I need to know if you dislike it because of personal or technical reasons. That way I can fix it if I can. But how am I to know the why if you don't tell me?! In short, learn to review. Thanks and have a nice day.

PLEASE READ AND REVIEW

Chapter Three

Hermione was sitting next to Severus, reading over the plans for the school when it felt like someone was watching her. She looked over to see Ginny Weasley glaring. No sooner had she looked up at the youngest Weasley then she got up from where she was sitting and went to stand in front of the older witch.

“You couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you? You just had to be the savior to all?” she asked snidely. “You’re just jealous of Harry! You always have been. What you did just proves…”

“That she is one of the strongest elemental witches ever to live,” came from Professor Dumbledore from behind her. “And it would do you well to remember that, Miss Weasley.”

She blanched. “She’s just trying to steal the limelight away from Harry!”

“And yet when the newspaper reports came out of our return, her name is never mentioned? That would be a rather odd thing if she were trying to steal the limelight, as you put it.” Severus this time was the one to point out to the stubborn girl.

“She-she wants Harry for herself!”

This only had Hermione getting to her feet. “I never knew that you could be this shallow.” She sighed. “Vanity thy name is Ginny Weasley.”

She walked away from the gaping witch, but ended up sitting down with Gregory Goyle, who was sitting dejected at the Slytherin table. She didn’t say anything, but just sat next to him. It was if Hermione was telling him without words that he wasn’t alone.

When Goyle let out a heart felt sigh, she reached over and put her hand on his shoulder. He looked to her startled.

“When do the trials start?” she asked quietly.

His head lowered again. “Next week. Mine…mine is on Wednesday.”

She nodded. “I’m not going to say everything is going to be okay.” His shoulders slumped a little more. “But I will say that I hope you don’t get sent into Azkaban.”

His eyes filled with tears. “Thanks.”

With one last squeeze of the shoulder, she got up to leave when Hermione was blocked from leaving by none other than Draco Malfoy.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he muttered.

She nodded, but said, “Everybody paid a price.” She looked over to Gregory, pursing her lips. “When is your trial?”

“Monday,” he muttered. “Along with my father and mother. Chances are we are going to be spending the rest of our lives in Azkaban.”

She looked back over to him, trying to think of something positive to say to him but only came up with, “At least there aren't as many dementors there as before.”

Draco let out a snort of derisive laughter, but sobered up and asked, “How are you?”

Swallowing thickly she answered, “About as well as to be expected I suppose.”

He frowned. “But you were cursed with the cruciatus by my aunt for hours!”

But before she could say anything, it felt as if something had hit her back. Frowning she turned around to see snot pouring out of Ginny’s nose even as she was looking at Hermione in shock. Electricity seemed to crackle in the air as Hermione went over to the witch.

“You flung a curse at my back?” she asked in a controlled voice that had Ginny’s eyes widening in fear. “When are you going to grow up?” A crack of thunder filled the air, making the entire great hall go silent.

Mrs. Weasley came running over and pulled Ginny back, stepping in front of her. “Don’t you dare…”

“She attacked me,” Hermione told her. “She flung a hex at my back. So you tell me why I shouldn’t dare be upset.”

Molly turned and saw for the first time that Ginny had snot running down her face. She grabbed up her daughter’s ear, dragging her away from Hermione. She felt someone coming up next to her and looked over to see Harry there.

“Didn’t we learn anything from this war?” she asked him hoarsely. “Anything at all?”

Tears were running down her face as she left the hall. Severus’s eyes narrowed as he got up, going over to where Ginny and Mrs. Weasley were.

“Miss Weasley, how dare you do as you have done here? That was grounds for expulsion!” Severus hissed.

“You can’t do that, you-you death eater!” Ginny screamed at him.

“On the contrary, I am the headmaster of this school.” Ginny lost every bit of color in her face. “You, young lady, will be allowed back in, but do not think for one instant that you will go unpunished.” He stepped up closer to her. “And Merlin help you if you hurt Miss Granger for you will not know the end of my everlasting wrath.”

He stepped away from her and went in search of Hermione, never seeing Harry going up to her and telling her that they were finished. Or Ginny’s subsequent meltdown, as her mother lectured her that she brought it on herself.

Severus found Hermione by the lake, looking out at the giant squid as it leapt around in the air. He stopped next to her, watching her as she absently combed her hair out of her face with her hand.

“Life used to be so less complicated,” she whispered. “I feel so confused. I knew my standing, who I could trust and who I couldn’t.” She sighed heavily. “This wasn’t what I thought it would be at all. So much for plans and ideas.”

“Perhaps you should make a new plan?”

She nodded. “But what? I thought I would work for the Ministry, but now that holds all the appeal of brain death.”

He snorted with laughter at this, unable to hold back his mirth.

“I could open up an apothecary, but business has never held my interest.”

“Have you given thought to going to university?”

She nodded. “For a long time I thought I would.”

“But why not now?” he inquired.

Her head dipped slightly as she replied, “I just don’t want to now. The thought of being away from what little family I have left leaves me feeling cold.” She moved closer to him as the winds kicked up, blowing frosty air at them both. “Harry and the Weasleys are all the family I have left in the world.”

“No,” he murmured. “You have Remus, Albus, and myself as well, not to mention most of the rest of the staff here at the school.”

She moved closer to him. “Severus, I have an idea on how to help some of the people going on trial.”

He put his arm around her shoulder, muttering, “Dear Merlin, witch, are you determined to save everyone?”

“No.” She looked into his obsidian eyes. “At least this time the idea doesn’t involve me bringing back anyone from the dead.”

He laughed quietly. “Then by all means do tell. I’m already brimming with curiosity.”

Hi! It's time for the Review Sing-A-Long! Yesterday's answer was the "Cell Block Tango" from the musical Chicago. Cookies go out to beerwench1313, Jade, and morgana. Chocolate soy milk goes out to beerwench1313 for knowing that it was written by Kander and Ebb! And chocolate sprinkles go out to morgana for knowing the character who sang the line! Sorry if I missed anyone.

Time for today's Review Sing-A-Long! (I don't own any of these songs, though I am broke enough to wish I did.) "It starts with one-- one thing I don't know why, it doesn't even matter how hard you review" That's it! No hints. Cookies go out to those who get it! Give it a go! You might just know it yet. Thanks and have a great day.
