The Morning After

A/N: Sorry it\'s taken me a while to update. I was down a computer for about a month. Well heres the next installment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adraya clutched the silken sheets to her, something wasn’t right. A soft laugh rumbled through her dreams melting into a subtle hiss. She felt cold fingers try to pry into her mind and tried to close off against them. A flash of red eyes and a hiss pierced her skull. She sat up in bed a cold sweat clinging to her and heard a scream. Realizing it was her own she sat back and leaned against the headboard panting. Seconds later a female house elf popped into the room nearly causing her to scream again.
“Is Missy ok?” The concerned little creature reached out to place a comforting hand on hers. “I’m named Flopsy Master told me to take care of Missy. Can Flopsy get Missy anything?”
Composing herself she managed a small smile “I’m fine just a nightmare that’s all but I would love a cup of chamomile tea.”
Excited to have a task the little house elf popped from the room and returned less than a minute later with a tray with tea and gingersnaps. “If missy need anything else just call Flopsy.” And with that the elf was gone.
The next morning Adraya awoke to find the tea tray removed and simple black robe draped over the back of the chair. “Yugh robes, how antiquated.” Sighing she headed into the bathroom freshened up and changed into the robe. She looked hard at herself in the mirror and gently touched the black circles marring her otherwise creamy complexion. “Too bad Snape\'s potion does nothing for under eye circles.” She began to head for the door leading to the hallway, her intention was to find some breakfast. Before she even stepped into the hallway the little creature from the night before popped in front of her to block her way.
“Oh Missy should not be in hallway. Missy go back to bed and Flopsy will bring you breakfast.” Sidestepping the house elf Adraya took only two steps before it popped in front of her again.
“Flopsy I’m not tired and if I stay in that room a moment longer I’m going to go crazy.”
“But Master said Missy not to get out of bed today.” The elf went to grab her hand and lead her back to the bedroom. Sidestepping her once again Adraya made a break for the set of staircases that lay in the middle of the hallway. Before she could even place her hand on the banister Flopsy was there to stop her once more.
“Please Missy don’t go. Flopsy not do good job if Missy go and then Master be angry”
Getting down to eye level Adraya put a hand on the elf’s head. “Let me deal with master, I’ll make sure he’s not angry with you I promise.” Wringing her hands she thought about it for a minute and reluctantly stepped aside. Adraya stepped from the darkness of the hallway and into the light pouring though the window of the entrance way that the stairs lead to. With next to no trouble she found the dining room where Severus was already seated and reading a paper with his morning breakfast.
“What are you doing out of bed?” He put his paper down rather forcefully rattling the table setting.
“I thought I’d take a tour and stop for some breakfast before I head home.” Unfazed she took a seat opposite Severus at the table and placed the napkin casually on her lap. Within seconds two other house elves began setting a place for her.
“Take a tour? Heading home? Confound it can’t that blasted house elf ever do anything right. FLOPSY!” She saw the little house elf cowering behind her master looking pleadingly at her.
“Snape, it wasn’t Flopsy’s fault. I managed to outrun her here so if anyone should face your wrath it should be me. And another thing I’m not going to just sit around that room all day waiting for you to decide what to do with me. You should know me better than that.”
Anger gave way to curiosity. “I should know you better? Woman I don’t know you from Eve what in bloody hell are you talking about?”
“Prying into my mind while I’m asleep? Now really, at least be man enough to try it while I’m awake but I doubt you’d have any more success than you did last night.”
What little color the anger brought to his face drained away. “I didn’t try to pry into your mind last night. Tell me more about what happened.”
“At first I was sleeping soundly, thinking I was dreaming, there was laughter and a hiss and I felt someone trying to get into my mind. So I closed it off and there was a flash of two red things almost like eyes and another louder hiss. You’re telling me that wasn’t you?”
“No, that sounds like the Dark Lord’s special. But I have known few who could fight him when conscious let alone when asleep.”
“Even more reason for me to hurry up and get back to New Jersey. Please pass the milk.” Severus only now noticed that the elves had brought her out food and tea.
“How do you expect to get to New Jersey? Hijack a broom?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, apparation of course.” Severus watched her with interest as she took a tentative sip of tea and deciding it was too hot whisper something over the edge of the cup. “How else would you suggest I get home then?”
“You are far too weak to apparaciate the thousands of miles to get back to your home. You really should be staying and resting for at least another day before you even attempt to floo back if that were even a possibility. My suggestion would be to wait and then make a portkey home.”
“But waiting takes time and making a portkey takes time and I don’t have time. I have a potion brewing away right now and Merlin knows what will happen if it’s left unattended. You should at least be able to understand that. And if you think there’s a way that you can get me to stay here, there’s not. I’ll just apparaciate anyway and if I die I die, but I can go on bad terms or slightly less bad terms. Your choice.”
As she stood up so did he, “Oh fine, finish your breakfast and I shall make a
portkey and escort you home.”
“How chivalrous.”
The sky was just lightening as the pair made their way up the rocky path in the wooded area in front of her house. Having left Britain at ten o’clock it was only about four in America. This was the quiet hour when most birds still slept and the night dwelling creatures were just slinking away back to their dens. There was always a serene peacefulness about this hour that enchanted Adraya and neither she nor Severus dared to break it with conversation. They finally emerged onto a well trimmed albeit weedy lawn. Slightly out of breath she turned and offered her hand to him “Thank you for taking me home have a safe trip back, nice knowing you hope to never see you again and all that jazz.”
“Allow me to walk you to the door and make sure that it’s safe.” Skeptically she eyed him and finally relented.
“Fine but I don’t kiss on the first date.” Bemused he followed behind her until they reached her door. She barely placed a hand on it before it gently swung open of its own accord.
