The List

Chapter 2: The List

Step one: get subject to be aware of your presence.

Well he was sure she was aware of his presence. She always had been; no questions about it. The only thing now was making sure she was constantly aware of his presence. Now that his plan was started there was no going back. Excitement coursed through his body as he looked forward to the next couple of weeks.

The week following the incident with Malfoy, because it really couldn’t be called anything else, was an unnerving week for me. I’ve had to go over it in my head numerous times. Looking back I really should have been paying more attention, but ever since Harry killed Voldemort I haven’t been as cautious.

Monday morning was the morning I got my period. Therefore I guess it all started Tuesday at breakfast in the Great Hall.

~Recollection~

I had woken up that morning feeling surprisingly refreshed. Getting ready with a smile on my face, I think I scared Harry and Ron when I appeared in the Gryffindor common room. I’m usually not a morning person so I can see where their trepidation came from.

Following Harry and Ron to breakfast Tuesday morning, I felt ready to conquer just about anything. It was not until I stepped into the Great Hall that I noticed that something was not quite right.

The three of us walked to our seats and sat down. Upon sitting I took the opportunity to glance around the room. Nothing appeared to be out of sorts but so as not to draw attention to myself I didn’t give the Hall the thorough search I normally would have.

Throughout the entire meal I kept me eyes and ears peeled for anything unusual. Needless to say I could find nothing out of place. The only thing I garnered were a few surreptitious glance from Harry for being so out of it for the whole meal. After the meal I was able to curve Harry’s curiosity with a murmured ‘time of the month’ comment.

Following breakfast in all of my classes that day I felt the unease I had felt that morning in the Great Hall. The unease didn’t cease until I was in my shared common room with Blaise that evening. Nothing I had seen or heard all day had given me any clue as to why I was feeling so out of sorts.

The next day, Wednesday, I still had the bad feeling however it didn’t follow me around all day. I only felt the disturbance in some classes and at all of the meals. None of it made any sense to me.

The pattern continued throughout the next week. Sometimes I felt uneasy in every class and at all meals and the other times only some classes and at all meals.

~End Recollection~

The only discernable connection to me at the time was that not matter what I always felt uneasy at every meal. Once I made that connection I was able to make the next obvious connection: I was uneasy because of someone and not something; I also shared most of my classes with whoever this person was.

It took me a lot longer than I would have liked to figure out a list of possible culprits. My reason for taking so long though was definitely because of how classes are split up in 7th year. Since students all end going to different professions the curriculum is set so the students can pick and choose what courses they will take.

For those of the students that have no idea what they wish to do with their lives there is a curriculum that is set to cover all of the basics. From there the students can choose from a number of professions once they have completed said curriculum.

For those of the students who know what they wish to do, like myself, they meet with their Heads of House. There they pick out a more specific curriculum that goes hand in hand with their chosen profession.

Therefore when looking at my classes to see who the culprit was, it took me longer because of the lack of pattern to the persons in the specific classes. It would have been much simpler to find the culprit had the system been the same for 7th year as it was for the rest of the years.

For the rest of the years certain Houses were paired together for certain classes; therefore finding the culprit would have been as easy as finding out what House they belonged too. In the end though I can only surmise that it was obvious from the beginning that my search was not going to be that easy.

At the end of about a week and a half I had my list of culprits narrowed down to ten people. The list consisted of the ten people that shared all the same classes as me whenever I got the feeling of unease. The list consisted of the following people: Harry Potter, Hannah Abbott, Blaise Zabini, Thoedore Nott, Draco Malfoy, Pavarti Patil, Padma Patil, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Pansy Parkinson and finally Dean Thomas.

There were a few people whom I could cross off immediately simply because I knew there was no reason for them to be scheming something against me. That meant that Harry, Blaise, Dean and the Patil twins were crossed off the list. That left me with five other people: Hannah, Nott, Malfoy, Justin and Parkinson.

Looking at the list I decided that I was able to cross off Hannah and Justin. Although I had busted the two some three weeks ago for having sex in the Astronomy Tower I didn’t think they were the type of people to hold grudges. Simply giving them a warning and no detention probably helped my case.

That left me with a list I cringed just looking at. The list contained three Slytherins, two of whom had probable cause for scheming something against me considering our past. Looking at the list again I decided that it would do me no harm in crossing off one other name: Theodore Nott. Nott and Blaise were pretty close friends and he wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize it; so I felt safe in my decision. That however left me with two people still on my list: Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson.

The two of them probably had the most cause for plotting something against me. They had been my enemies since first year and after the war not much had changed. I think the only change since the war was that now there were barely any confrontations between us. Other than the occasional insult thrown back and forth I didn’t think that even either of the two of them really had cause to plot against me. Unless, that is, one of them holds a grudge from before the war. Deciding that I could investigate no further until I talked to Blaise, I went to find him.

It was Wednesday evening after dinner therefore Blaise should be in one of four places: Slytherin common room; our common room doing homework, his bedroom or the last place, the library. Leaving my room I went to look in the first two places that were quickest to get to.

Entering the common room I could tell that Blaise had just left because his things lay neatly piled on the coffee table, meaning he had finished his homework. Running up the stairs to his room, a quick knock and no answer confirm that Blaise has left the Head rooms altogether. Leaving the room I decide that the easiest place to check next is the library.

I ran all the way to the library because I knew that I would never be able to rest until I talked to Blaise. My first thought upon entering the library is that I’m glad I started working out the summer of my fifth year. If I hadn’t started then, I wouldn’t have been able to run all the way to the library with nothing more than a little bit of a flushed face to show for it.

Making sure that I’ve slowed down as I walk past Madame Pince, I go in search of Blaise. I don’t have to look far as I find him in our usual study spot near the rear of the library.

When Blaise and I had become the Head Boy and Girl we decided to ignore our House’s rivalry and become friends. Our friendship had started in this very spot the second day back this year.

Walking up to what we had deemed as our table, I pull out a chair and wait for him to finish writing down what he is writing. As he looks up I smile.

“I need to talk to you, if you’ve got a minute?” I ask him. I notice he looks around before answering however I don’t have time to ponder on it as his gaze finally settles on me.

“Sure Bella, what can I do for you?” he in turn asks me using the nick name he gave to me the moment we became friends.

“Good. I need to know if you know of anyone in Slytherin plotting against me.” I decide not to tell him all of my theories in case I offend him for accusing his friends of something. I hear a snort and I am not impressed when I see that he is trying to hold back laughter. “Would you like to include me in on this little joke of yours?” I snap at him. This is important to me and he is laughing. I for one fail to see what is so humorous in this.

“Sorry, sorry Bella. I meant nothing by it. It’s just you seemed so serious and I just can’t help but laugh because you and I both know that the animosity between our House’s is now just harmless taunting. Do you honestly believe that someone has it out for you?” The look I give him must convince him that I’m truly, honestly serious.

“Alright, well what has you thinking that someone is plotting something against you?” he asks me with a more serious expression. I feel myself relax a bit; Blaise is here for me and will help me out. I just know it. With more confidence I start to tell him just what has been wrong.

“Lately I have had this feeling of unease following me around. However the weird thing is I don’t feel it everywhere, only some places. I always feel uneasy during meals and I’ve noticed during certain classes as well. It’s been going on for about a week and a bit.” I pause at this part to see his reaction; he signals that I should continue. Taking a deep breath, I plunge on.

“Okay, now don’t make fun of me for this but I wrote up a list of possible suspects. The list comprised all the people who were present whenever I felt uneasy, which I was able to pinpoint to certain classes and obviously meal times. The list started off with ten people but I was able to eliminate seven people almost instantly. The three people I was left with were Theodore Nott, Pansy Parkinson and finally Draco Malfoy.” By this point I was remembering my deliberating over Theodore Nott therefore I missed the look Blaise shot at one of the bookcases behind me. By the time I had looked up at him he had already resumed his concerned expression.

“Now I was able to cross Nott off the list pretty quickly as well. Since I know he really values your friendship I knew he wouldn’t risk it to do something to me. Malfoy and Parkinson on the other hand, I know they’re your friends but somehow I can see one of them getting a kick out of tormenting me. That’s the reason I asked if any of the Slytherins were plotting something against me. I can’t think of anyone else and now I’m wondering what your thoughts on the matter are?” I give him a questioning look.

“You know what I think Bella? I think you’re looking for something that isn’t there.” Here he stands up and walks behind me. His fingers on my shoulders answer one of my unasked questions.

“I think that you’ve just been stressed lately. We have NEWT’s this year and you’re in a lot of challenging classes. I also think that you just miss the adventure of your like before the war. Before this past summer you always had something on your mind that wasn’t school related. Now though all you’ve got to think about is school. There’s nothing to distract you from the dullness of it therefore you’re fabricating something out of nothing to fill the gap that has opened up since the end of the war. Now I think that you need to go up to your room and go take a nice hot bath. Take a really long one; trust me it will help.” Gently helping me up Blaise pushed me towards the exit.

Had I not been so wrapped up in thoughts of nice hot baths with pretty scents and bubbles I would have noticed one of two things. Number one: Blaise had manipulated me into forgetting about my theories. Number two: that the uneasiness had been with me the whole time I had been talking to Blaise.

“So, now that your suspicion has been proven correct, what are you going to do now that you have her attention?” Blaise smirked at him as he sat down in his previously occupied seat.

“As if you don’t know.” He replied as he and Blaise went back to the discussion they had been having about a certain Lady before she had shown up to interrogate Blaise.

La Fin

paigeey07 --> I had a fun time writing that chapter. This one as well :P
margaritama --> I'm sorry but what does reco'd mean? I have read it and re-read it and I can't make sense of it :S I always did love a more empowered Hermione, though I like it when she lets loose and lets someone else take control as well. :D

A/N Sorry to everyone who has been reading this story of mine, but I will be having to set back my up-dating to once a week. Hope that doesn't discourage anyone from continued reading. Hope everyone likes this chapter. There may be some confusing bits and pieces however I promise that they will be brought to light soon.
