The Cold Moon

A sequel to New Years From Sète

Chapter 3: Checkmate.

It was mid-day on the tenth when Harry woke with Draco laying half over his body. Harry couldn\'t help but give a smug smirk when he thought about what he had done the night before. He, Draco, and the elder Malfoy\'s were invited to the French Ministry for Magic’s home, where after dinner, they went on to observe the magic performed by the ministry during the cold moon.

Harry intentionally drug out their stay, so they would all have an alibi for midnight, when the records building would be destroyed. They had been with the French minister the evening before from 7:00 PM to have dinner, and leaving at 2:00 AM that morning. Yes, Harry was sure that before the day ended, the minister would be contacted to be asked about all their whereabouts.

Harry then looked down at the blond head of hair just under his chin, and just like every other morning, he ran his fingers trough the blond locks. As the tips of his fingers gently massaged Draco\'s scalp, the blond wizard started to wake. When Draco\'s eyes fluttered open, and he felt those heavenly fingers rubbing his head, he smiled, and stretched his muscles. It was a daily routine it seemed, and he wouldn\'t have it any other way.

"Hello my lion". Draco muttered with a gravely voice. "My head hurts, and I feel like an Ashwinder slithered into my mouth and shat".

Harry snorted at this, and reached for a small phial on the bedside table. He handed the concoction to Draco, yawned, and resumed rubbing Draco\'s head. Draco uncorked the phial, and without lifting his head, he sucked in the hangover potion through the corner of his mouth; swallowing the sweet liquid. Immediately, Draco felt the results, his head eased off, and his stomach quit churning.

"Bloody hell, why didn\'t the hangover potions back home taste as good as these do"? Draco asked as he slowly looked up at Harry.

"Well, that\'s simple love, as most of them were brewed by either your godfather, or by others using his instructions. He didn\'t want anyone to have a pleasant experience after a night of drinking".

"Well, I know one thing; I want to visit the brewer of these to get their formula so I can make a fortune from selling them at my new apothecary"! Draco explained with a slight grin.

"You think like I do, making all we can off all the ones who snubbed us". Harry stated. "I think I can arrange for you two to meet, as the brewer works at the ministry here".

"Great! Now, let\'s get up, and get a quick shower. I want to see the progress they have made on the pool house and the pool". Draco said as he released Harry, and slid out of the bed.

Harry finally got up, and slid on his robe. As he walked around the bed to go with Draco into the bath, Kreecher popped into their view, and they both stopped.

"Kreecher be asked to fetch masters Harry and Draco". Kreecher croaked. "The Minister for Magic is in the floo asking Kreecher to come and find you".

Draco quickly looked at Harry, then back to the old elf. "Kreecher, tell the minister that we shall be there momentarily". At this, Kreecher gave Draco and short bow, and popped out of sight at the snap of his bony fingers.

"Well, I figured we would hear something this morning". Harry stated with a yawn. "Come on my blond dragon, let\'s see what he wants".

Both young wizards quickly made themselves presentable in the mirror, and left their room for the study.

"Mr. Potter, Mr. Malfoy, so good to see you again this morning"! Minister Pitan happily stated. "I am sorry to bother you today, but I just had a fire call from minister Shacklebolt, and he wanted to know if you had left France around 11:00 last night. Of course I told him you had been with me from dinner yesterday evening until 2:00 this morning talking politics".

"Er, thank you minister Pitan. Why did he say he was wanting to know our whereabouts"? Harry asked, acting as if he were dumbfounded at this.

"Mr. Potter, they think that just because you are both gay wizards, that you have something to do with this YAG group. I told the man that you have not left France since you moved here". Minister Pitan explained. "I am afraid they are looking for a scapegoat, and you two are being targeted".

"Well, may I ask what the ministry here plans to do"? Draco enquired.

"We will not let anyone from there harm you, and I can personally assure you of that Mr. Malfoy. If they keep up their persecutions, France may start to enact trade barriers against Britain, along with other select political maneuvers". Minister Pitan strongly stated.

"What would those maneuvers entail may I ask"? Harry enquired. "It\'s just that I have purchased a huge amount of stock in the wizarding subsidiary of Banque Transatlantique, and they have given the British ministry a huge loan. I also own nine new businesses there now, and it could possibly hurt our finances".

"All right Mr. Potter, we will hold off on this for now, and only use it for drastic measures". Minister Pitan said. "However, let me ask you this; what would happen if any trade restriction threats came from our country, and the yanks"?

"Well, as long as they were threats, that may be a big help. The threats would have to reach the wizarding public of Britain though, as their ministry will try to hush it all up". Draco explained.

"Ah, well that can be easily arranged. How about we make a public appearance there, and give a few media sources some well placed words. That would put the pressure on the ministry, and their Wizengamot. If they thought our country and the U.S. would penalize them for their prejudiced beliefs, then they will act I think". Minister Pitan stated with a thoughtful look. "How about we do this tomorrow around noon, as I have someone in the states to contact"?

"That would be fine minister, and we will meet you at the ministry at say 11:00 to floo there"? Harry replied.

"Yes, yes, that would be fine. I shall see you both then, have a quick lunch, and make our way to Diagon Alley". Minister Pitan finished and his head disappeared from the green flames.

"Draco, I\'ll be up in a minute; I need to floo the bank". Harry said as he watched his fiance leave to ready their shower.

"Mr. Gerrard, please tell me what the ministries options are"? Kingsley Shacklebolt enquired as he tried to calm the sick feeling in his stomach.

"Well minister, you see, with these bombings and business losses, the banks management has told me that your risk is too high to continue the loan we granted without either raising the interest rates, or the ministry purchase high-risk liability insurance".

"Quit beating around the bush Mr. Gerrard, you\'re the bank manager here. What is the interest rising to, and how much for the insurance"? Kingsley growled out.

"Well sir, the interest would go up to 65%, or the ministry could obtain insurance at 2,000,000 galleons for the term".

"Well that\'s not too bad, or for the insurance that is". Kingsley stated, but quickly shut his mouth as he watched the bank manager shake his head with a sigh.

"Minister Shacklebolt, the policy is 2,000,000 galleons per month, not per year. The premium is also floating in that it can increase if these bombings continue, and the publics business does not increase". Mr. Gerrard stated and held up his hand to cut off Kingsley\'s explosion. "Minister, if I can give you some candid advice"?

"Go ahead"! Kingsley grumbled as he wiped the sweat off his bald head.

"Minister, all this can be avoided if you would see that the Wizengamot passed the laws that Mr. Potter wanted. This activist group will most likely continue on, and if it does, things will only get worse. Mr. Potter can, in fact, bring suit against the ministry for not protecting his property, which he now owns as the major lien holder, and this activist group is easily destroying it at its will. The ministry could end up so far in debt that it would quickly fold within the next two months if action is not taken immediately. Does this not make any sense to you"?

"Yes, I\'m afraid it does. I said that I would not bend to any group, but things have gotten so bad now that I think I\'ll have to". Kingsley explained. "The ministry can\'t be closed as we control Azkaban, and we would have to release the Death Eaters who are now confined there. Either that, or kill them, and that would break all the sacred wizarding laws on the books. Plus, there are others imprisoned there that are not Voldemort supporters, but are still dangerous to the community". Kingsley sighed. "There\'s also too many other things that the ministry controls, and the public just can\'t be without the ministry. The Statute of Secrecy alone has to be protected, and if the muggles found out about us, it would be a disaster".

"Well minister, I guess you have answered your own question for now. If I may say, you need to call the Wizengamot together, and let them know what you are up against. You also need to tell them that Banque Transatlantique, Wizarding is only giving them until the end of January, and the interest will raise, or you will need to take the liability insurance". Mr. Gerrard calmly explained with his hands folded upon his desk.

"Thank you Mr. Gerrard. I will try to have an answer by noon tomorrow". Kingsley said as he shook the bank managers hand, stood, and left the office.

Francis Gerrard quickly stood from his desk, warded his office for complete privacy, and threw a pinch of floo powder into the hearth of a small fireplace beside his desk. "The Potter-Malfoy Villa, Sète France"!

Kingsley had just settled down behind his desk, from calling in the Wizengamot for an emergency meeting for that evening, when a copy of the evenings Daily Prophet was dropped onto his desk by an owl. He quickly picked it up, and scanned the headline.

"YAG sends statement on explosion at the ministry records building!

"In our news breaking story, the gay rights group, YAG, sent our paper a written statement about the massive explosion that destroyed the Ministry of Magic\'s records storage building last night. In their statement, they take full responsibility for the explosion, and told us here at the Prophet, in their letter, that only more was to come if the new laws they demand are not enacted. Below is their letter to the public.

Quote:

"To all of the wizarding public of Great Britain. We forewarned you that the attacks would continue if you did not stop your senseless bigotry against the gay and lesbian wizarding public. It will thus continue, and will now grow to more massive attacks until our demands are met.

"While we were inside the records building, we obtained highly classified documents that show all the miscreant acts made by both the Auror department, and by members of the Wizengamot. If our demands are not met, we will start to release this highly sensitive information to the public, and let everyone know about all the skeletons hidden in our government employees closets. One would be surprised at what some of them have done while in office, or on duty.

"A prominent figure of the Wizengamot, a Mr. Segram from Sheffield, has been caught three times soliciting prostitutes in Knockturn Alley. According to other records, he impregnated two other prostitutes, who in turn, had three bastard children between them; one having twins, and another having a single birth. All three of the said children were secretly placed into a muggle orphanage, according to the records. Also, the children’s birth records were wiped clean. This happened under the former Minister for Magic, Cornelius Oswald Fudge. Also, the undersecretary at the time, a Mrs. Delores Jane Umbridge, signed off on the record deletion.

"In the same law enforcement record, we found that two of the three prostitutes Mr. Segram was caught with, were in fact, male! Keep in mind that our Mr. Segram was one of the most vocal against Mr. Harry Potter, and Mr. Draco Malfoy, being in a gay relationship, and was part of the cause of them fleeing England.

"Now, the ministry buildings will still keep vanishing, and more of our ministries little crimes will be revealed, until we get what we want. Pass the laws we asked for, and all will go back to normal, it\'s as simple as that.

"Oh yes, we almost forgot, we would like to say hello to Mrs. Patricia Segram"!

Sincerely,

The YAG Leadership

"Bloody Hell! Percy, get your arse in here now"! Kingsley shouted. "Call Arthur in from his vacation, this can\'t wait"!

"Harry, why are we going over to mum and dad\'s"? Draco asked as they walked across the lawn connecting the two villas.

"Oh, uh, to tell your parents about us going to London tomorrow". Harry stammered. "Plus, I thought we could have dinner with them as it\'s been a few days".

"Harry, I know you, and something else is amiss. You know, you might as well spill it now, as you know how bad I hate surprises". Draco stated as he looked at Harry with narrowed eyes.

"Ha! It\'s not the surprise you don\'t like Draco, it having to wait that irks you". Harry said with a smug grin. "Now come on, it\'s almost dinner time".

Harry and Draco met the elder Malfoy\'s and had a grand dinner together. Afterwards, they all went into the sitting room, and began to discuss the local gossip, and shopping of all things. Finally, after Harry saw Draco practically squirming in his seat beside him, he reached inside his jacket, and brought out a copy of the Daily Prophet.

"Uh Lucius, I know you quit receiving the Prophet, but they printed a special headline for this evening, and I thought you would like to read it". Harry stated, and handed the man the rolled up paper.

Lucius placed his reading glasses upon his nose, and began to read. Harry noticed a smirk form on the mans lips straight off, and the farther Lucius read, the smirk turned into a grin. When Lucius finished, he barked out a laugh.

"Oh that is amusing! I take it you sent the letter"? Lucius asked as he watched Narcissa snatch up the paper before Draco could grab it.

"Of course I did! I had the bank to make the move just before I sent it". Harry explained.

"What is so bloody funny"! Draco exclaimed, and was getting more irritated by the minute as he watched his mother read the paper while breaking out in giggles!

"Here my little dragon, read it". Narcissa chortled and handed the paper to Draco.

Draco read the headline, and the article in record time. "Harry! You kept this from me all through dinner until now"? Draco asked through his laughs, and swatted Harry on the shoulder.

"Yes, I wanted to see your expression, plus I wanted to share it with my mother and father-in-law. I figured we could all do with a good laugh. Now, wait until tomorrow when we stroll through Diagon Alley with minister Pitan, and the US magical ambassador in tow. The Prophets reporters will be all over us, and then we will drop the bomb so to speak".

"To my opinion, Kingsley will call in the Wizengamot this evening for an emergency session, as I know what Mr. Gerrard told me earlier from the bank. I think, but I could be wrong, that they will start writing the new laws tonight, and vote on them sometime in the next few weeks". Harry finished with a grin.

"You, Harry James Potter, are rotten to the core"! Draco said, and gave Harry a very sultry kiss.

"Oh no son, he is a true Slytherin at heart". Lucius stated, as he began to pour them all a nice glass of cognac.

Thanks again for the reviews, and to the well-wishers!

I wanted this chapter to be longer, and to finish with it, but by the first of the week, I came down with a cold on top of everything else, and today was the first day that I felt like writing anything. The blood clot problem is almost cured as the pain has left. So, with that said, they\'ll now be one final chapter to end it up, and the next part of the story will be for Valentines day, as I want to get started back on The Rebellion.
