Recovery

After Hermione was able to finish off what little she could eat, Snape took her directly over to the Mediwitch Madam Pomfrey. The older witch immediately began issuing orders to have the curtains drawn. Between Severus and the older witch they managed to strip Hermione of the clothes she was wearing and put to bed with several healing potions. When asked what to do about the robes, he told Poppy to burn them.

Taking the orders to heart she did just that. But when she returned, she found Snape in bed with her. He held the younger witch as if she were the most precious being on earth. Quietly she turned around and left to allow the two some much needed sleep.

Hermione ended up staying in the Medical wing for nearly two weeks. She escaped from time to time, wanting to get some fresh air as well as to stretch her legs. She would visit Hagrid. She would even watch quidditch practice when the mood struck her to. But inevitably she would end up at the dungeons. Hermione slipped into the classroom on one occasion and watched Severus from the shadows of the room. How she loved his voice, she thought, as she listened to the lecture on the brewing of Dreamless Sleep to the sixth years. As soon as the lecture was over, Snape went over to her.

“Why aren’t you in bed?” he whispered.

“I needed to see the world and get a breath of fresh air,” she told him quietly. “Are they making Dreamless Sleep?”

He nodded.

“Then you better get over to that little Hufflepuff in the second row left hand side at the end. She just added grated nightshade to hers and made Endless Death.”

He rolled his eyes. “I swear some of these students make Mr. Longbottom look like a potions master.” He offered his arm to her. “Come along and sit down, Madam.”

She watched the rest of the class from Snape’s desk, reading potions essays. She snorted with laughter, showing Snape one of the essays which was by an unknown student, who decided to write his or her essay all in rhyming Latin. Severus told her to grade it and went back to walking about the class to terrorize the students.

At the end of class he walked her to dinner and then back over to the medical wing.

“Harry’s been watching me,” she told him. “I don’t know what to say to him. It’s like he’s asking a question I can’t hear.”

“He will ask it,” Snape muttered. “Mark my words he will.”

She sighed heavily as the Dreamless Sleep she took began to take hold. “There are so many questions. Where does one start to give the answers he wants?” Hermione reached out and cupped his face. “Goodnight, Severus.”

He kissed her palm and held her hand as he watched her drifting off into a healing slumber. He placed her hand gently onto the bed and went over to where he knew Harry was waiting and watching.

“Come with me,” Snape told him.

The two went back over to Snape’s private quarters. Once there, Snape asked if Harry wanted a drink, which he declined.

“Why did you bring her here?” Harry asked, his voice cold. “She hasn’t a place here any more.”

“Her place, as you put it, is by my side, Mr. Potter,” Snape said in a harsh voice. “And although she may have been absent in these hallways for a good deal of time, let me assure you that she and I have kept in very close contact for those years.” He leaned back in his chair. “You know what I’ve always been curious about, Potter? Why is it that you hate her so much? Even Ron has forgiven her whatever trespasses that you can’t seem to get past.”

“She killed Remus!” he roared.

“Is that what this is about?” Snape yelled. “I should have known.” He got up to pour himself a drink. “If I hadn’t made a promise, I could give you the answers you seek.” He looked to the younger wizard. “But there is someone you can speak to right here in this castle, if you are interested?”

“Hermione?” he asked, but received a shake of the head no.

“She can’t speak of it without…” His eyes went a little dull. “…without recalling it all.” He downed the rest of the drink. “The first person you should speak to is none other than Bill Weasley. As you know he’s currently here as a guest speaker for the career week event for the seventh years.”

“And what should I ask?”

“You know the questions, Potter. I can only lead you to whom to speak to in order to get those answers.”

“Why do I have to speak to Bill Weasley?”

“Because he can answer what others cannot,” he murmured.

“And what exactly is that?” he pressed.

Severus turned slowly and looked at the young man intently as he answered, “How it all began of course.”
