The Long & Winding Road

His thoughts overwhelmed him. The corridors shifted around him, long and winding, staircases moving along with his feet, though he couldn’t tell you where he was headed. Yet, somehow, he always ended up at her door. She was lodged in her own quarters down near the kitchens as a summer intern, though lately she’d spent more nights in his chambers in the dungeons. All of that seemed lost now.

He’d sought Minerva out, not for approval, but for general advice, and he scolded his mind, general advice could have come from anyone, though there were few he trusted as well as Minerva. It was hard, the first few years of his teaching, to look her in the eye after what had happened. But they spoke of it one night, all cards on the table, and never there after. But he always trusted her. Why doubt her now?

A shifting staircase rose up beneath his feet, taking him up to the corridor that led past the medical wing. Too many times he’d seen the girl there, either on her own or to visit her foolish friends. He kept his head low, trying to chase away the thoughts. Had he been naïve? As naïve as he had been when he tangled himself up with a professor? How had he let it go on as it did?

The stones seemed to move beneath his feet, for felt not as if he were walking, but drearily drifting through the castle. Hermione. The girl had become his world in such a short time, but how could he in good conscience allow it? Minerva was right, she was no older than he was when things had started between them, and he did not have her best interests at heart if he willed her to continue on in their relationship. Minerva had been quick to end things, though he always wondered, (but would never ask) would things have been different if he had waited two more weeks until he wasn’t a student? None of it mattered now.

The corridor was long, winding down another flight of stairs, which shifted at the bottom and led him down past the library and his thoughts turned once more to Hermione. Holed up in there most school nights, researching, the girl was studious and that was putting it politely. A smile came to his lips at that thought. Studious enough to have read many books on sexual positioning before coming to his bed the first night she came.

Darkness and chills past him by, spirits floating right through him, Peeves even tossed a few spitwads at him, but nothing phased him, and his feet kept moving. And as if by magic, there he was, standing face to face with the marble door that led into her chambers. “Severus!” she cried, pulling the door open. He’d found his way to her. But now what?
