Chapter 3: The Letter
Harry was sitting on his bed; it had been a week since he had been back at the Dursleys. The little visit from Remus, Moody, and Mrs. Figg had worked wonders. Though his so-called family didn't lift one hand to feed him, they totally ignored him, which was fine with him. He made his own meals and returned to his room to eat. When he went in a room any of his family occupied, they immediately left, leaving him alone by himself.
Harry, however, was not sleeping well at all. He was having terrible nightmares, especially about the death of Sirius at the Ministry of Magic. He had been reading the Daily Prophet every day, and sometimes three times a day if there was a special edition out. So far, it was mainly about the death eaters who were caught that night, their immediate trials, and sentencing to Azkaban. Delores Umbridge was also under investigation. 'The cunt will most likely get off', Harry thought ruefully. That's all right, he fully intended getting even with that bitch when the time came. Fudge was in the Prophet too. It didn't look good at all that he would be the Minister for Magic much longer. That brought a smile to Harry’s face. Fudge was another one that Harry wanted to get even with, and he vowed he would if he lived.
Harry was also having pain in his scar; sometimes it was a terrible pain when Voldemort was especially angry. He had punished some of the Death Eaters severely, blaming them for helping botch up the job in the Hall of Prophecies. Voldemort was still highly upset at loosing the prophecy about himself and Harry. Of course, Harry didn't give a damn, as he knew what it contained. He knew in the end, he would be a murderer because he would not let Voldemort win.
Harry thought about all the secrets kept from him. Well, that was going to stop, unless they didn't want to keep their golden boy, or their weapon. He didn't believe Dumbledore when he told Harry how much he supposedly cared about him. Something about the so-called blood protection from his aunt Petunia just didn't sound right to him. He needed a book on wards and protective spells to study. If Voldemort had Harry’s blood flowing through his veins, then why would Petunia’s protection help him now? That just didn't make any sense at all, but of course, Dumbledore still wanted him back at the Dursleys. 'That's utter rubbish', Harry thought. He might be slower than some, but he could reason a few things out. He couldn't ask Hermione because she would break her neck to tell Dumbledore, or someone who would relay what he was up to back to the old goat. Hermione was too uppity, too anal retentive, and too much against breaking the rules.
Harry also thought about The Order of the Phoenix. He was going to demand he be admitted, and be present at every meeting, regardless of whether he was seventeen or not. After all, it concerned him more that any other member in it. If they didn't want to allow him to sit in, well 'Fuck them'! Harry thought. He would tell them to shove it straight up their arses, and that they could fight the war themselves without him. From now on, it was going to be his way, or the highway, remembering the muggle saying with a small smirk. Harry knew that Dumbledore still had a bunch of secrets he was holding back; despite him telling Harry he had told him everything. Harry didn't trust the old fart as far as he could throw him.
Harry was getting bored sitting in his room at the Dursleys day in and day out. He was up for a trip to Diagon Alley soon. If nobody would take him, he would just go by himself, as he could always flag down the night bus.
Then there was the matter of Sirius's will since he died. Harry personally didn't want anything; all he wanted his Godfather back. However, he would be damned if he would allow either the Ministry or the Order to lay their claws on what Sirius had left. That also brought him to wonder about the will from his parents, as he had never seen it. Dumbledore was supposed to be administering it. Well, that was going to stop, he didn't trust him with his purse strings. He really needed to make a trip to Gringotts and speak with someone over his parent’s estate. He also, needed to withdraw some money, and convert some to muggle pounds. He wasn't worried about spending any money now, as when he finally left the Dursleys this time, he was not coming back. He personally didn't give a flying fuck what anyone thought about that from now on out. Also, if the Dursleys thought for one minute they would ever try to lay their sticky fingers on his money, they would rue the day they ever met Harry Potter.
It was getting late in the afternoon, and the sun would set in a couple of hours. Harry thought he would try to get some sleep, so he removed his glasses, laying them on the night table, and placed his wand carefully under his pillow. He then stripped off his clothes down to his boxers and stretched out on the bed. Within minutes, Harry was asleep.
It had been a fretful sleep, mostly tossing and turning, when Harry suddenly awoke. He lay still for a moment as he could have sworn he heard a muffled pop like someone apparating nearby. He slowly fished his wand from underneath his pillow and rolled over towards his door slowly. He reached for his glasses, putting them on, and pushing them up his nose. Finally, after his eyes adjusted, he slowly turned on the small dim lamp on his night table. There at the foot of his bed was a house elf. He quickly set up in bed, aiming his wand at the elf.
"Who are you?" Harry asked quietly.
"I'm, Nod sir, Nod the house elf. My master sent me here to deliver a letter to the great Harry Potter sir."
"Oh, no, not another Dobby." Harry exclaimed under his breath while scratching his head.
"How did you find me"? Harry asked the small elf.
"Nod asked the house elf Dobby at Hogwarts where the great Harry potter lived sir. Dobby and I is knowing each other from years back sir."
"Dobby told you did he? I'm going to strangle Dobby the next time I see him. Is this important Nod"? Harry asked.
"Yes very important Harry Potter sir. Nod is to stay here until you read it and then take back a reply sir." The little elf said while holding out the sealed parchment.
"Let me see it then." Harry said taking the parchment from the small elf.
Harry broke the seal on it, and wasn't familiar with the seal at all. He unfolded the letter and scanned it over quickly. He almost dropped it when he saw the name at the bottom. He then began to read it in earnest, several times actually. He never once thought he would see this, especially after what transpired towards the end of the year. He again read over it one more time.
"Harry Potter,
"Harry, or I hope you should grant me permission to call you Harry, I need to speak to you urgently. I have found out, and overheard some things that have changed my mind about what has happened in both our pasts. I first want to apologize to you for treating you so badly over the years. There was no good reason or excuse for it, it seems. I need you to trust me now, which I know will be a hard thing for you to do.
"First off, I overheard my so-called father discussing some things with his so-called friends about you. I want you to know, I never knew of these things until tonight, or I would have come forth sooner. The main warning here is to trust nobody! This includes the other two-thirds of your golden trio, and those muggles who call themselves your relatives. Do not trust anyone until we talk in person. I do not know who is loyal to you beside myself now. There are a lot of questions I can answer for you.
"I have stolen several phials holding memories belonging to my father, and also a few belonging to my Godfather Severus Snape. I want you to know now that after I have seen them, Severus had no right to treat you so poorly. To all of this, I have had a huge change of heart, and have decided to change sides in this war. Not to the light mind you, nor to side with Dumbledore, but to be on your side. Whatever you do, do not contact Dumbledore, as he is involved in some of this, mainly concerning your powers. I guess you can see where this is going? Either side can't be trusted.
"Have someone you absolutely trust obtain some Veritaserum to question me with if you would like. I will slip away, and be in Little Whinging at approximately 12:30 AM tomorrow night, at that small park not far away from your home. I should be able to slip away from home then without being caught. I will apparate there and meet you sometime then. Be looking for me, and remember, tell no one!
"I want to help you Harry, I really do. Again, I'm so sorry for being such a git and right bastard to you since our first year. I am also sorry for your loss of Sirius Black, as I understand he was something to you? Bellatrix, the cunt, tried to get her hooks into me tonight, and I've personally been on the wrong end of her wand now. Oh, and to the stuff at the end of school, and on the train, I deserved what I got. I didn't know the truth, and again I'm sorry. To put it short, so you understand, I never intended on taking the mark. Please send back a reply with Nod to let me know how to proceed.
"Yours most sincerely,
"Draco Malfoy
"PS: Nod is my personal house elf and can be trusted. I have instructed him to obey you the same as he would myself".
Harry couldn't believe he was going to do this, but stranger things had happened to him lately. Plus, he may be able to actually get some answers about what was truly going on. Harry got out of bed and went to his desk to withdraw some parchment and a quill. He then began to write his response to Malfoy. He kept it short and to the point, as Harry would ask his questions when he met him tomorrow night. After blotting the ink, he folded the parchment, sealed it, and handed it back to the small house elf.
"Nod, take this straight to Draco, and to him only. Don't let anyone see you. Will you be going directly to him when you leave here?" Harry enquired.
"Yes Harry Potter sir, Nod will be taking this straight to Master Draco’s hand. Whatever the great Harry Potter wants, Nod will do at once"! The little elf said as he stared at Harry with awe.
"Nod, that's exactly what I want you to do. You can take it now if you like." Harry told the small house elf, and gave a long yawn.
With a snap of his fingers, Nod popped out of sight, and was gone in a blink. Harry just shook his head, as he didn't know what he was about to get himself into. At least this elf didn't try to punish itself at every turn, nor did it act anything like poor old Dobby, Harry thought with a grin.
Harry then prepared himself for bed again after making a quick trip to the loo. As he lay down staring at the ceiling, he knew the rest of the night would be a long one.
