Chapter 3
Love of a Phoenix
Chapter 3
Hermione had just finished putting away the ingredients that she and Severus hadn’t used that night and wiped her brow. She turned and saw Severus at one of the sinks rinsing out the cauldron they had used to brew the Pepper Up potion for Poppy.
“Was there anything else you needed sir?” Hermione asked.
“Actually, we finished earlier than I figured. Would you care to join me for a cup of tea?” Severus answered.
“I would love a cup of tea.” She smiled.
Severus nodded. He dried off the cauldron, put it away and led Hermione into his study. Hermione sat on the sofa, while Severus flooed to the kitchens for some tea and chocolate chip cookies. A few seconds later, the tea and cookies arrived. Hermione gave him a little look when she spotted the cookies.
“What can I say, I’m a slave to my sweet tooth.” He said.
“Me too sir.” She laughed.
It had been a week since she had begun her duties as his assistant. In that short time, she had discovered, that Severus wasn’t as cold hearted as he seemed. Of course, that just caused her to fall even deeper in love with him than she already was. She had fallen in love with him in the middle of her fifth year, and that love had grown stronger with each passing day.
“What do you plan on doing once you graduate Miss Granger?” Severus asked.
“I plan on going to the university and majoring in potions. I want to be a Potions Mistress.” Hermione answered.
“You would make a great Potions Mistress.” He said.
“Really? You think so?” She questioned.
“Yes. You have the makings of a terrific Potions Mistress. After all, you did brew the Poly-Juice potion in just your second year.” He replied with a knowing smile.
“You knew?” She asked worriedly.
“Yes. Normally I would punish you, but being turned into a cat for a week, is punishment enough. Plus, I was quite surprised that you managed to brew that potion in only your second year. Most students don’t even attempt it until their seventh year, if then.” He answered.
Hermione looked down into her tea cup blushing. Severus just smiled as he took a sip of his tea. They sat there is silence for a few moments. Finally, Severus asked the one question, he had been wanting to ask.
“Miss Granger, what are you exactly?” He asked.
“What?” Hermione said in confusion.
“I know you are not just a witch. You are something else, I just haven’t figured out what.” He replied.
Hermione sat down her cup, got to her feet and walked over to the fireplace. She sighed as she turned and faced him once more.
“It figures that it would be you that figured it out first.” She sighed.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“You see, I love you Professor. I have since the middle of my fifth year. Because my feelings are so strong for you, your soul would have felt that.” She explained.
“I don’t think I understand Miss Granger.” He said in confusion.
“Here, it will make things better if I just showed you. I just hope you are as brilliant at your magical creatures as you are at Potions.” She replied.
Severus just sat there in confusion. He stared at Hermione. Suddenly, the fire from the fireplace leapt to life and began swirling around Hermione. His eyes widened as she began floating within the cyclone of flames. She extended her hand toward him and the flames began to encircle him and the chair he was sitting in.
“Sweet Circe!” He gasped.
She drew back her hand and the flames retreated back into the fireplace. She opened her eyes and they locked with his. Severus couldn’t speak. She took his silence as a sign that he believed her some kind of freak. She turned and began walking to the door. Severus jumped to his feet and rushed toward her.
“Stop. Please.” He said.
Hermione stopped but continued looking at the stone floor. She refused to see the fear that she knew would be reflecting within his onyx orbs. He reached out and tilted her chin up so her eyes met his. What she was, was anything but fear.
“You’re…you’re not afraid of me?” She asked in awe.
“Afraid? Why should I be? Miss Granger, Hermione, you are beautiful. All my life I’ve wanted to meet a living breathing human Phoenix.” He answered with a smile.
“Please don’t tell anyone. Especially Dumbledore or Voldemort. Voldemort would either kill me or try to get me to join him and Dumbledore would treat me as if I was an experiment.” She pleaded.
“You have my word. I won’t tell anyone. I swear.” He said.
He then took her hand and lead her over to the sofa. Once seated, he poured her a fresh cup of tea, and handed it to her. Hermione quietly sipped her tea, while Severus waited for her to speak.
“Most people fear us. I even fear myself. My mother was just beginning to teach me how to control my powers when she was killed. I’m afraid of losing control and killing those I love.” She said.
“What? You mean you don’t know how to control the Phoenix within you?” He asked in shock.
“My mother felt it would better to wait till I was sixteen to teach me.” Hermione answered.
“No wonder you were so scared to show me. I’ve heard tales of what could happen to a Phoenix who loses control of their powers. Is it true they turn dark?” Severus asked.
“Yes. As a matter of fact, many of the Phoenixes in my family have turned dark. Only a small handful have remained light.” She answered sadly.
“Is there anything I can do to help Hermione?” He questioned.
“I don’t know. I didn’t even know I was a Phoenix until my fifth year. Then last year, my parents were killed. I don’t know what to do Severus.” She answered as tears began to fill her eyes.
“Don’t worry. I can help you. I would say we should tell Albus and perhaps he could help you.” He said.
“Well, I’m just afraid of becoming just an experiment to him.” She sighed.
“Let me talk to him first. I’m sure he can help.” He said gently.
“Do you trust him?” She asked.
“Yes.” He replied.
“All right. I had better go. Thank you for listening.” She said as she got to her feet.
“I’ll always be here if you need me.” He smiled.
She smiled and nodded her thanks. She turned and exited the study. Severus dropped heavily onto his sofa. He had imagined a lot of things that Hermione could have been, but Phoenix wasn’t one of them. He got up and flooed to Albus’s office

“Lucius, is everything set?” Voldemort asked.
“Yes my Lord.” Lucius answered.
“Good. I have sent Severus a letter telling him to bring the mudblood. I want everything to be perfect. No. Mistakes.” Voldemort hissed.
Lucius nodded. Voldemort then waved his hand in dismissal. Lucius bowed and exited the room. Voldemort sat back in his chair and smiled evilly. With any luck, he would have Hermione on his side soon.
