You Fell Off A Dragon

“Why is everything spinning?” Charlie asked, except what he really said was more like “Hhhhhnnnnnnnn.” A cool, damp towel was placed over his eyes and a gentle hand caressed his face.

“Don’t try to open your eyes yet, and don’t try to speak yet. Just relax and drink a little bit of this,” a familiar, soothing voice commanded. Gentle hands tipped his head forward and placed a cup to his lips. Charlie allowed a thick, flowery liquid to be poured down his throat, “I know it’s strong, but the rose flavor is a lot better than the alternative,” the woman said. After letting the stuff do its work for a few minutes, the spinning began to slow and the harsh pounding in Charlie’s head began to subside to a dull ache. He swallowed awkwardly twice for trying to speak again.

“What happened?” he croaked.

“You fell off a dragon.”

“Did I?

“You did. And then it kicked you.”

“Huh.”

“Yup.”

Charlie was confused, “But I never fall,” he said decidedly.

“Sometimes gravity happens to good people,” the voice replied, “Better now?”

“Evie,” Charlie said, the voice made sense now.

“Yes, Charlie?”

“You left,” he accused. Silence was his only reply. He realized that his head was on something soft. Something breathing. He hadn’t seen her for six years and suddenly he was lying with his head in her lap. Her tender fingers continued to caress his throbbing brow.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“Continuing my research,” she said, “I’ve been working in the homogenous dragon camps for several years now; Japan, Sri Lanka, Tierra del Fuego, and most recently Algeria. I’ve wanted to study the society here in the Carpathians for so long, since it is the longest established dragon collective in the world. I finally got the clearance to come, so I packed my things and left.”

“Did you know I’d be here?”

“I had no idea, Charlie, I swear, all I received was a welcome letter from the Romanian Ministry and a portkey notice from ours. I was given no dossier, nothing.” Distress resonated through her.

Charlie reached up and grabbed one of her hands, squeezing, “How long will you be here?”

Eve sighed deeply, “I was planning on two years. Maybe three.”

“Hmmm,” Charlie said. They both fell silent for several minutes.

“I’ll leave you to rest, I need to unpack anyway,” Eve delicately removed herself from under him, and Charlie reluctantly let go of her hand, keeping his eyes shut tightly as she fled from the infirmary.

“Seems you know our newest guest,” Maxwell’s poncey voice grated on Charlie’s ears. The ghost glided into the room and feigned leaning against a cabinet, his moustache quivering with curiosity.

“From school,” Charlie replied curtly, rising stiffly from the cot and making for the door.

From school, my arse, Maxwell thought, and I'm a prancing, dancing goodfairy!
