Chapter Three: Too Close, Two Close
It had been two days since Snape had kissed Harry. It was hard to imagine a third person’s view to Harry, but he was sure he hadn’t imagined the entire kiss. Snape had been particularly more distant than usual, and Snape had made a point of staying out of the rooms until Harry was sure to be asleep.
Their lesson was more invigorating, but nothing out of the normal happened save for the fact that Harry was finally able to push Snape out of his thoughts and memories.
Of course, now Harry was even more confused then he had been when subtle signs of Snape having feelings towards him were happening. He guess that now that he was aware the man did have feelings, he was confused.
Harry watched Sivious pivot about the front of the room as Neville stood and was made example of.
“Now see here class,” Sivious smiled at Neville and it seemed all the girls in class sighed. “Mister Longbottom here makes a very valid example. You must show only confidence when faced to a creature of dark. If you are not careful, your fear will soon become your weakness. You may sit down, Mister Longbottom. Thank you.”
Neville sat down and smiled uncomfortably. At least Sivious didn’t make fun of him, Harry thought to himself. Everyone knew that Neville was really more interested in Herbology and that he was not the best at any of the other areas. Everyone had their strengths. Harry thought for a moment.
“Class dismissed,” Sivious said at the top of the room. As everyone began to pile out, Sivious walked over to Harry and smiled. “May I speak with you for a moment, Harry?”
“Yes, sir.” Harry stood up and followed Sivious into his office. He had Potion’s next, so he hoped that Sivious would be quick about what he had to ask. Sivious walked Harry into the office and pointed to a seat across from him. Harry sat down and placed all of his items on the floor.
“How have you been, Harry?” Sivious said with a smile, proffering tea that had been previously set which had Harry wondering, when had the man set that out or had it set out? He took some of the raspberry and chocolate tea.
“Fine, sir.” Harry said after taking a sip.
“You seem a bit distracted the past two days. Did something happen?” Sivious asked.
“Nothing, sir.” Harry almost choked out. Sivious had noticed? That was definitely not good.
“Hm, well I must have been mistaken. Any way, the reason I wanted to speak with you was that this weekend, I had planned to go out to Homesmeade, and I had wondered if you would accompany me?” Sivious asked with another charming smile.
“Sir? Would that be okay with the Headmaster?” Harry asked his heart beginning to pound in his chest. He did remember that Snape had told him to stay away from Sivious, but he wondered if that was out of jealousy, or if he really was a bad person. He didn’t seem bad. Then it hit him; Snape saw Sivious as an opponent.
Harry wasn’t one for sneaky plans since that would be too close to something a Slytherin would do, but maybe if he accompanied Sivious, he would get Snape to open up to him a bit more about well, anything.
“Oh yes. I’ve already asked the Headmaster, and he agreed that you did need to get out of Hogwarts for a day,” Sivious responded as he took a sip of his tea. His blue eyes glimmered in a secret smile as he gazed at Harry. Harry couldn’t help but be mesmerized by those eyes. He really was a handsome man.
Harry thought for a moment and finally decided that no harm could come of it as the Headmaster himself had agreed. “Okay, I’ll come.”
“Oh wonderful,” Sivious said with a cheerful laugh. He grabbed Harry’s hand and squeezed it. “Say we meet at my quarter’s tomorrow around noon?”
“Okay, thanks.” Harry stood and breathed out and quickly finishing his tea. It seemed to taste a bit different today, but he quickly shook that off as well. The man stood with him, and Harry got a good look at what he had just agreed to. A day with the man that Snape had said was dangerous. He decided that maybe letting Snape know wouldn’t be the best idea.
He left the room feeling somewhat lightheaded. It took all of his strength to stay awake during Potion’s which was just as unbearable as it usually was. By the end of the class, he had lost them twenty points and was stuck with a five-foot essay on the Wolfebane potion.
~~**~~
Like the previous night’s, Snape was no where in sight when Harry arrived in the rooms. He sighed and sat down on the couch. He had noticed that the man hadn’t been at dinner either. He wondered in the back of his mind if there was something array.
He brushed it off as Snape avoiding him and set to work on another long essay as assigned by Snape earlier; he figured it was best that when the man entered the rooms that he was seen working on it. Well into the essay, Harry felt his eyes begin to close sleepily. Well maybe he could take a quick break from the assignment and just sleep a bit. He put the quill and parchment on the side table. He curled up on the couch and fell quickly into sleep.
Hands touched over his body. He felt light as air. His body felt as though it was being lifted and walked into another room. His eyes slowly began to open…
He gazed up at the distinct features of his Potion’s professor. The man looked like he too was bordering on exhaustion. It was then that he realized that Snape was placing him on his bed. He breathed out as his heart began like it always did.
Snape looked down at him. Their eyes met once more.
“Next time Potter, take yourself to bed. The couch is not your bed,” Snape said as he removed himself from Harry.
Harry couldn’t help but smile. It was obvious that Snape was trying to hide the act with angry words.
“Won’t happen again,” Harry said with a small smile.
Snape nodded his head. Harry caught sight of the indifferent look and sighed. Just like the man to hide his emotions. Every time they were together, Harry couldn’t deny his feelings for the man.
Snape stood there looking at Harry. It was almost comical. It was like the man was a teenager again the way he was standing. It seemed like Snape was battling whether or not to say something.
“I need to make several potions for Madam Pomfry tomorrow. If you are not already prior engaged, I could do with some assistance.” Snape said with an almost gentle voice. That was definitely not like him. Harry had never known Snape to ask for help in any form especially from him.
A knob of something felt like it had caught in his throat. He was going to town with Sivious tomorrow. His body felt numb. He was either going to have to tell Snape, or cancel with Sivious. However, it was getting harder to focus and his body felt hot.
“I, um, well I was asked to go to Homesmeade with Sivious tomorrow,” Harry said with a small crack to his voice. He watched as Snape slowly grew darker. He could tell the man was not happy. “He said that the Headmaster said I would need a day out.”
Snape’s eyes caught with Harry’s and the pure emotion that elicit within them caused Harry to gasp to himself. “I see.”
Harry suddenly felt the need to explain. “I thought I was going to be alone this weekend. Hermi--”
“I do not care to hear your sob story of your empty weekend, Potter.” Snape straightened his back. “Do what you please Potter. Do not, however, let me catch you sleeping on the couch again.”
Snape left the room, his robes curling franticly behind him. Harry felt his heart sink. He had definitely made a mistake. He quickly recovered from his close call to tears. Snape wasn’t around the past two days and then suddenly wants Harry to help him. Harry had every right to go with Sivious.
He still couldn’t help but feel like he had made a mistake.
~~**~~
Harry knocked on the door to Sivious’ quarters. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to go since he had felt a bit sick all morning. There was a soft sound of items being moved and then a shift of footsteps towards the door. When the door opened, Harry was almost taken aback. Sivious stood in black slights and a well fitted shirt that highlighted is tight build….not that Harry was looking. His hair fell just over his shoulders, and his eyes seemed to pop out that much more with the accent of black on fair skin.
It was often that Harry had seen men in black, but no one quite made it look as good as Sivious did. Harry had tidied up a bit with his unruly hair. He had put on a pair of jeans and a red shirt.
“Ah, Harry. I was just getting everything ready to go. Come in, come in.” Sivious pulled Harry inside by the shoulders. He was walked across the wide room to the fireplace. “We’ll be flooing there, if that is alright.”
“Yeah, that’s fine.” Harry watched as Sivious gathered up some bags. His eyebrow raised a bit. “What are in the bags?”
“Just a few items for the night,” Sivious said with a smile.
“The night?” Harry said feeling suddenly faint.
“Yes, Harry. We’ll be staying the night there and returning tomorrow morning. I have tickets to a show tonight and reservations at the inn,” Sivious said as he counted the bags and seemed to internally do a check list.
“Um, I didn’t bring anything for the night, sir.” Harry’s heart pounded in his chest. Sivious had said nothing about staying the night.
“Oh, not to worry, Harry. I already had your things sent over. Severus was good enough to send a few items.” Sivious put a trunk that Harry definitely recognized by the fire.
Snape? Snape helped pack his items? His face could not hide his sadness. Did he really approve of this? He really did want to faint. Harry had thought that no one was to know that he was staying with Snape.
“Well, everything is here and in order, shall we go?” Sivious said picking up the trunks and levitating them with his wand. He resized them and put them in his pockets. Harry shook off his sadness for the moment and decided to just enjoy the day.
They flooed into the town with their items in tow in Sivious’ pockets. Harry followed him to the inn where they would sleep the night. The room was a two bed room. It was simple settings, but Harry’s nerves could not stop firing. Sivious was placing their trunks in the room while Harry stood there in thought.
“Why does Snape not like you?” Harry blurted out. He couldn’t stop the question. He really needed to know and the story of their childhood did nothing to answer that question.
Sivious stopped unpacking his items for a moment and looked up at Harry. He sighed and walked over placing a calming hand on Harry’s shoulder. He moved them both to sit on the bed.
“I guess there is no avoiding it,” Sivious said. He sighed a bit and began, “Severus and I are brothers. However, we’re only half brothers. His mother is my mother, but our father’s are different. I came from a love affair.” Sivious breathed out.
“You said your parents were muggles…” Harry stammered out.
“I lied to avoid having to explain. I changed my last name from Snape to Stenprin since it was my biological father‘s sir name,” Sivious said. “When Severus and I were younger, Severus joined league with the Dark Lord and since I refused, I had to go into hiding. Albus helped me stay in hiding from my family. When I returned, Severus treated me as though I had somehow betrayed him by not protecting him. It seems that he still has not quite forgiven me. We used to be close,” Sivious said with a small, sad smile.
“Oh,” Harry said agreeing that the story did make sense. He still didn’t quite understand why Snape wouldn’t forgive him for staying away from Voldemort.
“I guess he also sees me as the opponent,” Sivious said looking at Harry.
“Why would he see you as that? Well, I guess you did fill in for the job he wanted.” Harry knew that Snape had been after the Defense Against the Dark Arts position for years.
“It’s not about the position, Harry,” Sivious said placing a hand on Harry’s. “It’s about you.”
“Me?” Harry was more then surprised.
Before he could further ask about it, his mouth was captured in a soft kiss. Harry gasped a bit as he felt Sivious’ hands take hold of his hips and bring him closer. He tried to pull away, but the man pulled him closer instead, and he could not wrestle himself out of the grip. He pressed his hands against the man’s chest and tried to push away, but the man did not budge.
He was pushed down onto the bed, and he tried again to push at Sivious’ chest. He struggled as the man forced his tongue into Harry’s mouth. Merlin, he had definitely gotten himself into a predicament. Something tasted weird as a sort of liquid was forced down his throat.
Knocking sounded on the door and for that moment, Sivious pulled away and Harry pushed to get out from beneath him. He was forced back down again. He cried out as his wrists were twisted.
“Let go of me,” Harry said angrily.
“Oh no, Harry dearest, that will not do.” Sivious said with a devious smirk.
The knock came again a bit harder. Had Sivious locked the door? Harry felt his head began to feel light. The door unlocked and flew open. Harry was seeing double. He tried to see who it was, but his eyes wouldn’t allow it and he felt himself begin to pass out into darkness. Before he did, though, he heard Snape’s voice.
“STUPIFY!,“ Snape said faintly in Harry’s ears.
~~**~~
Harry awoke in a bright white room. He closed his eyes to the brightness, only to hear shuffling at the side of his bed. When he turned, he saw Madam Pomfry assembling an assortment of vials.
“Drink this, Harry,” she said as she poured a potion into his mouth. It tasted somewhat sweet. He let the taste linger on his tongue. “You are one lucky boy.”
“What do you mean?” Harry said shifting up on the bed and being forced to drink another potion.
“You were poisoned,” she said as if it was nothing.
“I will continue,” said Dumbledore as he walked in. He stepped to the side of Harry’s bed and gave him a small smile. “Unfortunately, it seems that Sivious was working for the Dark Lord, Harry. When I was made aware that he was taking you to town, I sent Severus to see what he was up to. He had poisoned your tea the day before and was ordered to take you to the Dark Lord the day before.”
Harry felt his throat dry. “He said you gave him permission.”
“Of course he would,” Dumbledore said sadly. “It was Severus who brought it to my attention that he was taking you. I had him here for surveillance as I thought he would not try anything within Hogwarts. It was brought to Severus’ attention that the Dark Lord had someone that was to bring you to him, but was not quite sure if it was Sivious.”
Harry looked over as Snape entered the room. He felt weak. The man had been trying to protect him, and he was stupid enough to join Sivious for the weekend. He knew now that it was why he felt uncomfortable with the man.
“I assure you Harry,” Dumbledore said with a small, sad smile. “I had not wished for any of this, but the evidence was enough to get him sent to Azkaban and thus, it was vital that we find him in the act.”
“Do not believe that you are out of danger, Potter” Snape said as he walked towards the side of Harry’s bed. “The Dark Lord will be making many more attempts as the time of war nears.”
“As such, we will continue to keep you in Severus’ rooms,” Dumbledore stated. “I have to meet with the Ministry for Sivious’ trial, so if you could stay within the rooms while I am gone, Severus will be able to keep an eye on your condition.”
“Yes, sir.” Harry said a bit off put by the events of the previous day. He was helped up by Madam Pomfry and taken to the rooms. Snape followed him into the living room and surprisingly, helped him sit down.
Harry felt he had to apologize.
“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you,” Harry started. “Thank you for saving me.”
A little cliché, but he saw that it worked. Snape gave him a look, but again, the man just nodded instead of yelling at him. There was definitely something different about him. He watched Snape sit down, next to him this time, and turn to look at him.
“It was definitely close, Potter.” He breathed out and said almost silently, “Too close.”
Harry couldn’t help but smile. Again the man was showing him a side he hadn’t seen. He wasn’t sure if Snape was opening up, but it looked like he was definitely having a hard time staying indifferent.
“Sir, why did you help pack my bags if you knew what he might be up to?” Harry couldn’t help but ask.
“I did nothing of the sort, Potter,” Snape stated. “You seem to find it hard to grasp that it was all planned, and Sivious did not make anyone aware of his plans. It seems that Sivious was aware that you were staying here.”
“Oh, sorry,” Harry said hanging his head a bit. It did seem stupid to think that Snape would help pack his bags and then save him. Especially, after Snape had said to stay away from him. Even more to think that he would tell Sivious where Harry was staying.
“He said he was your half-brother,” Harry started once more. “Was that a lie as well?”
“No, Potter.” Snape said angrily. “That is true, unfortunately.”
“Did Dumbledore hide him when Vold--I mean, the Dark Lord first appeared?” Harry asked knowing full well that his questions would at some point get annoying, but Snape continued to answer.
“The Headmaster was never fond of Sivious. Sivious disappeared for three years, and no one knew of his whereabouts. When he reappeared, he had joined league with the Dark Lord,” Snape said looking at Harry.
“Sir,” Harry started.
“What is it now Potter?” Snape side massaging his temples.
“I would like to help you with those potions,” Harry said looking at the man.
Snape looked up at him and for a moment, Harry thought that the man might smile. As always though, Snape’s face became indifferent. “Very well. We will set to work tomorrow since you are still not fully recovered.”
“Okay,” Harry said as he relaxed back against the couch and watched the flames of the fire lick just at the top bit of the inside of the hearth.
As Potter watched the fire, the most feared Potion’s Professor smiled softly to himself. It was quick and well hidden, but it happened. Snape would never admit to it, but his feelings for Potter were unavoidable. Despite his many attempts at hating the boy, he was undeniably attracted to him.

End of Chapter--TBC
Author’s Notes: I was going to make Sivious’ part a lot bigger in the story but decided against it because it would take away from Snape and Harry. Expect much more passion induced anger in the next chapters to come.
