Replies to the public:

Sisterae: My first reviewer, thank you so much. I always try to portray my characters as realistically as possible. And Maddie has been in my head for awhile, she was just waiting for the right leading man…thank goodness for Snape.

Magpie79: Thank you for taking the time to review. I can promise with the way this sotry is just screaming to get out that the updates will be regular. I can also promise that I will do all in my power to steer clear of the marysue here.

Chapter 2: Welcome to Bedlam

Madelyn sat staring out her window. Her thoughts as fleeting as the scenery, as ever changing as the minutes that ticked by. She was so absorbed in her own world as to be lost to the current space she occupied. So she didn’t notice the weary face that briefly peered in through her door window. Nor did she see it reappear quickly in the standard double-take. But she did hear the door slide open, and she definitely saw the man that entered her car.

“How do you do?” The man asked quietly. She didn’t miss the ruminative gaze that wandered from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. His soft brown eyes seeming to take in everything about her in one sweep.

“Hello,” Maddie responded scooting back in her seat and straightening her skirt.

“Do you mind if I join you Miss….”

“Lindsey, Madelyn. That is to say my first name is Madelyn...my last…is Lindsey.” Maddie gave a nervous chuckle as she took the man’s proffered hand and signaled him to the opposite bench with the other. ‘Don’t you sound like Einstein…dweeb!’ She thought to herself as the man took his seat.

“Miss Lindsey, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Remus Lupin.”

“Mr. Lupin, it’s nice to meet you too.”

“I hope you don’t think me to brash for asking but, are you and American by any chance?” Remus smiled as he settled in.

It was a warm, genuine smile, with just enough teeth showing as to display their even whiteness. Maddi noticed the sad, seemingly tired eyes that while so opposite in nature from his smile seemed to oddly compliment the man. Eyes that were currently looking at her in anticipation of an answer.

“Hmm?” Maddie stumbled. “Oh, yes! American! What gave me away? Was it the accent?”

“I’m afraid so,” Remus chuckled. “What brings you all the way to England, Miss Lindsey?”

“Writing and research. That is to say I’m writing a book. It’s set in both Scotland and England so I thought the best place to write it would be in the UK”

“It is as good a reason as any. What is your book about? That is if you don’t mind my asking?”

“No, no, you can ask away; but I am sure you’ll laugh” Maddie responded stalling, readying herself for the inevitable response that was sure to come once he found out her profession.

“Try me.”

“Alright, romance. I’m writing a Historical Romance”

Remus couldn’t help the shock that entered his eyes. And though he hid his expression quickly, Maddie saw it. ‘Well at least he’s not laughing outright’ she thought.

“That’s…really…I wasn’t expecting that. I mean, you know that there out there…romance novels I mean…it’s just that. Well, you never expect to meet one. A romance author I mean.”

“We’re not aliens, Mr. Lupin,” Maddie laughed. Men always did act oddly after she mentioned her chosen occupation. They either treated you like you were lying outright, and proceeded to withdrawal from the conversation politely. Or they would laugh and say, ‘you up for a little research *wink-wink*’. It was refreshing to see Mr. Lupin’s reaction, it certainly wasn’t common.

“Of course not, it’s just…I would have pegged you for a biographer. Something of a more pragmatic nature.”

“Thanks…I think.”

“No insult intended, Miss Lindsey” Remus said somewhat abashedly.

“None taken, Mr. Lupin” Maddie smiled reassuringly. “Besides I could easily argue that I am in fact a biographer….a biographer of looovvve.”

Remus blinked, Maddie’s smile deepened and then they both laughed. It was a relaxing moment shared between two strangers. It seemed that the atmosphere should have only improved between them, unfortunately the moment was shattered.

“Do you know where you are…exactly?”

Maddie’s laughter died in her throat, the joy she felt sank like a rock in her stomach. And uneasiness began to brew in her mind. The only thing she seemed capable of doing was staring. Looking at him as if she was questioning his sanity, and indeed, she was.

“I’m on a train…headed to Scotland.” Maddie replied slowly, her eyes narrowing on the man across from her.

“Headed to Edinburgh?” Remus persisted.

“Yes…”

The man across from her chuckled and nervously diverted his eyes. “How do you get on with all those muggles?”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He could tell in that instant what she was. The look she gave him confirmed his worst fears. They had a muggle on the Hogwarts train. What on God’s green Earth were the going to do now?

“I beg your pardon?” She asked him. Her body unconsciously leaning further away from him. The mild alarm becoming more urgent on her delicate face. Her russet eyes shined with concern. ‘Settle the situation,’ Remus thought.

“I said, I just wanted to be sure you were getting along without any struggles.” Remus announced hurriedly, surprised by his quick rejoinder.

“Ooookay.” Obviously she didn’t entirely believe him. Doubt lingered at the corners of her soft pink lips.

“I noticed you looked a little…” Remus paused searching for not only the right word but the right lie. “ Hurried…and unsure when you boarded. I just wanted to be sure you were doing alright. On the right track so to speak.”

“Oh...yes..” Her body relaxed, “I was very late arriving. I felt very rushed to say the least. But I’ve gotten it all figured out now. Thank you for asking.”

“No problem! Glad I could be of help.” Remus replied, now desperate to make his escape. “Well if you are sure you have everything well in hand here?”
“Yes, thank you again.”

“Well then…I’ll just leave you to it. Good day.” Remus made his bow, shook her hand again and fled the car. His mind racing with the reality of the situation, ‘A muggle aboard the train, a muggle aboard the train.’ He only knew of one person that could handle recent events in an appropriate manner. He had to contact Albus Dumbledore.

Rushing past John Coachman Remus slammed the door to the private floo. In a matter of seconds Remus was relaying his story to the wizened headmaster of Hogwarts. When he merely nodded at the end of his amazing tale Remus felt compelled to repeat his conclusion. “She is a muggle Albus!”

“Yes, I do believe that you have already mentioned that Remus. At least a dozen times before.”

Remus shook his head and took a deep breathe. “Alright, I am sorry Albus. I’ve just never heard of this sort of thing happening. What are we to do?”

“Nothing Remus.” Albus replied calmly, as if the answer should have been obvious from the beginning.

“Headmaster, you want me to just leave everything as is? Allow her to wander about Hogsmeade? Alone?” Remus couldn’t help but sound almost as incredulous as he felt.

“Of course not, dear boy!” Albus sighed, a sure sign of an upcoming lecture. “muggles do not simply fall through the gateway. We’ve taken precautions to ensure it doesn’t happen. Just as no muggle may see the castle, so no muggle can pass through the barrier.”

Remus stopped breathing, unsure if he had heard correctly. “What, exactly are you saying Headmaster?”

“Remus, she’s not a muggle. Why she seems to know nothing Hogwarts or any other such thing is unknown. We cannot ascertain what she does or doesn’t know until someone speaks to her.”

Remus released the great breathe he had been holding. “What do you want me to do Albus?”

“Bring her to me, Remus. But keep it quiet and keep her safe.”

“Of course Albus, I understand.” Remus replied as he ended the floo connection. What he didn’t understand was just how on Earth he was going to accomplish that.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I decided to take away some of Remus’ cool because it seemed to fit better with the incident, to drive home how rare an even this is, a muggle on the Hogwarts Train. That and I always pictured him being an overly energetic toddler. I don’t know why..I just get that feeling.
