Thanks for all of the reviews. They were certainly a nice surprise this morning.

About Pansy as annoying instead of boring, I\'d definitely agree. She\'s only boring in so far as she\'s endlessly predictable. Perhaps I should have written that she was perfectly predictable, but that seemed excessively alliterative.

----------------------------------------------

After arranging a meeting at a tea shop near Gringots for the following afternoon, Draco left a very confused Hermione on the opposite side of the dance floor from the spot where Goldstein still stood staring daggers at his back and glanced around for Pansy. With his mission accomplished, he could hardly wait to make his excuses and get home. Tea with Granger the next day required a great deal of planning. It wouldn\'t be easy to maneuver the brightest witch of his age into doing exactly what he wanted her to do.

As the buzzing in her ears subsided, Hermione glanced around and realized that she had to get home and dissect this mind-boggling development. She had been worrying about the new marriage law for months, which was why she had been dating more frequently than her job as a curse breaker at Gringots really gave her time to date. Still, with only ten days until the new year and the law\'s imminent passage, she was no closer to finding a man she could see herself spending her life with. But Malfoy... that was preposterous! She must have misunderstood. Malfoy wanted to ask her to introduce him to attractive muggle-born witches. That must be it. He couldn\'t want to talk to her about what she had thought he wanted to talk to her about.

Catching sight of Anthony heading her way, Hermione cut her mental ramblings short and headed for the door. She hadn\'t arrived with him, and she certainly wasn\'t required to leave with him. Hurrying to the apparation point, Hermione tried not to think about Malfoy\'s confusing request to meet the next day. She hadn\'t quiet worked out what he did want, but she was quite certain that she knew what he didn\'t want.

Seeing that he didn\'t have a chance of catching Hermione before she left, Anthony turned back toward the ballroom looking for Malfoy. When he found the other wizard, he stepped into Malfoy\'s path.

“What did you say to her?” Anthony demanded, clearly agitated.

“Calm down, Goldstein. We only discussed the new marriage law. It was a perfectly polite exchange about how neither of us has been able to find a suitable match,” Draco needled the Ravenclaw. “Yet, that is.”

“You stay away from her, Malfoy,” Anthony demanded. “I\'m going to offer for her, so you can just go bother some half-blooded Hufflepuff instead.”

“Look, Goldstein,” Draco gritted out. “Just because you follow Granger around like a love-sick puppy doesn\'t mean she\'s going to take pity on you and accept your offer. I imagine she\'ll have any number of offers, and she\'ll have until Valentine\'s Day to decide. Now get out of my way—I\'m going home.”
