Walking Home

CHAPTER 3: Walking Home

“Are you leaving now?” Ginny asked as Hermione approached her.

“Yes, Remus is going to walk me home.” Hermione smiled and hugged her friend close. “Congratulations Gin, I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you Mione, I love you, you know that don’t you? Ron doesn’t change that.” Ginny said, kissing her cheek. Hermione felt the tears stinging the backs of her eyes and hugged Ginny tighter.

“I know, I love you too.” She said.

“Take a little advice from me.” Ginny whispered. “Find someone you like and shag him stupid.” Hermione started laughing and pulled back to look at Ginny.

“Alright, where do you propose I find this poor bloke?” Hermione asked. She wasn’t shocked by Ginny’s comment. The female Weasley was probably the boldest creature Hermione had ever met and she never minced words unfortunately. Whatever popped into Ginny’s head usually flew out of her mouth within seconds.

“Oh I don’t know…..maybe he’s standing over there talking to my husband.” Ginny smiled, staring over at Remus.

“Remus! Are you out of your bloody mind Ginny! He was our professor!” Hermione stared at the man talking to Harry trying to imagine him as a sexual being.

“Why not, he looks like he could use a good roll in the hay and he’s not your professor now, you are an adult. I’m not suggesting you get married just bounce around on each other for a little bit.” Ginny laughed. “Maybe you can loosen him up.”

“You are demented, Gin.” Hermione said, shaking her head and slipping her feet back into her discarded shoes.

“Just think about it. I’ll see you in the morning at brunch.” Ginny kissed her again and shoved her towards Remus, smacking her hard on the backside with a laugh. “Go get him.”

“Are you ready to go then?” Remus asked, wondering just what had her face flaming. He could see the new Mrs. Potter smiling and laughing as she stared at them.

“Yes, I’m ready. Should we apparate to Hogsmeade and walk from there?” She asked. Remus nodded and put his arm around her waist and with a slight tug to her abdomen they disapparated from the garden outside of the burrow and reappeared at the edge of town in Hogsmeade Village.

“So, where to now?” Remus asked. Hermione pointed in the direction of her home and they walked slowly along the cobblestone lane. “How long have you lived here?”

“About six months or so. I’m renting a small house just outside the park. It’s quiet and you can’t imagine how much I need the quiet.” She said with a slow shake of her head.

“Oh, I think I can. I too find the constant hum of activity a bit much to bear at times. Especially after the war, I didn’t ask to be recognized, I did my duty and would have much preferred to be left alone.” Remus said. “I live near the park myself, in the woods.”

“I suppose I was lucky that my folks left me well off. I left my job at the ministry after my relationship with Ron fell apart so I have been simply enjoying my life alone, reading and researching. Only recently have I begun to feel the effects of my solitude.” She said, leading him along a path that skirted the lake in the park.

“The loneliness can become unbearable when you aren’t used to it.” He said. She shivered slightly, the summer night breeze was growing cooler and his senses could detect a storm moving in.

“How do you deal with it?” She asked as Remus removed the jacket of his robes and draped it over her shoulder. “Thank you.”

“It’s all I have ever known. School was the only time I spent among a lot of people and even then I spent that time primarily with Padfoot and Prongs. I never had an easy time making friends. No one wanted their children playing with a werewolf.” He shook off the memories and smiled. “I get out more these days. Harry’s wedding and tomorrows brunch, and I promised to be at Molly’s surprise party next month.”

“Oh yes! I still can’t believe the woman has never had a birthday party. You would think that after all she has done for everyone over the years someone would have done something nice for her.” Hermione led him out of the park and along a narrow bricked sidewalk towards a small cottage with a short stone wall and wooden gate surrounding it.

“Somehow I’m not too shocked. Molly has sort of gotten lost in the shuffle of her family over time. She will be thrilled though and probably try to take over.” Remus laughed, opening the gate and ushering Hermione inside to her door. “Well, you are home safe and sound.”

The sound of thunder rumbled in the distance and Hermione looked up to see the clouds beginning to roll in and block the beauty of the stars. The idea of spending another long, stormy night alone made her want to weep. She looked up at Remus for a moment, letting herself become lost in those dark, kind eyes.

“Why don’t you come inside for a bit, sounds like a storm is coming.” She said softly, wondering if she would have the nerve to do as Ginny suggested, with Remus.

“I should probably get home before the rain comes.” He said nervously, shifting slightly from foot to foot.

“I will not take no for an answer, come inside with me and have some tea. You can use the floo to return to your house after.” Hermione opened the door and stepped inside, looking back over her shoulder to make certain that Remus followed. Once they were inside she closed the door and turned the lock. Now what?
