Chapter 3: The Worst Night of My Life

“It was the worst night of my life…”

“I don’t think I can recount it, I ca- I can’t.” she said taking a deep breath. “Can you look? Into my memories, using Legilimency?”

Severus eyed her. “Are you sure Miss. Granger?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I want to get it out; I need to share it with someone.”

Slowly, he brought his fingers to her temples and whispered, “Legilimens.”

He was standing in front of a pleasant looking two story house. He looked around and saw Hermione apparate in front and walk up to the door. She tapped it with her wand and it opened, and she stepped inside. He followed her. He was in the living room, and Hermione was looking at Ron with a disgusted expression. He was passed out on the sofa with a bottle of fire whiskey clutched in his hand. He saw her shake her head and go upstairs and he followed behind her. They walked into a room, decorated in different shades of purple and pink. There was a little girl, with bushy brown hair lying on a canopy bed, a pink and purple polka-dot comforter at her feet. Hermione covered her with it, and brushed the little girls hair away from her face, then kissed her forehead. Then she turned and went back downstairs.

As she walked into the kitchen, the phone began to ring. She cradled it between her head and shoulder while simultaneously cleaning the mess Ron had made earlier cooking dinner.

“Hello,” she said into the phone.

The conversation became amplified and suddenly Severus could hear the other voice talking.

“Hello, Brianna darling,” the female voice began. “Listen, is your mommy home? Your daddy told me she was working until very late, and I want to come over and spend some, umm time, with you daddy.”

Hermione’s face became a mask of anger. She dropped the phone back into its stand and turned, intending to walk into the living room and confront Ron, but he was standing in the doorway, looking at her blearily.

“Who was tha?” he slurred, walking towards her crookedly.

“One of you friends Ron,” she said her voice shaking with anger. “You can’t stop can you Ron? We’ll I’m not dealing with it anymore. I want you out, first thing tomorrow.”

“Hermione! You can’t leave me! What about our daughter?!?”

“You will still see her Ron, but I cannot stay with you while you cheat on me every chance you get. I thought you loved me, but apparently I was wrong. You have until tomorrow, then I want your things and you out of my house!”

“Hermione please,” he begged. “Give me another chance!”

“How many chances have I given you all for the sake of our daughter? Enough is enough! You always swear this is the last time, you always swear your going to change but you don’t!”

“You bitch! You will not take my daughter away from me!” He screamed advancing towards her, “You WON’T!” he reached out and back-handed her into the wall, then stormed from the room. “Brianna!” he bellowed. “Come down here and talk to daddy.”

Hermione was slowly stirring from where she had fallen when he struck her, a purple bruise forming on her face. She stood up slowly, and that’s when Severus heard it. The familiar Pops! Then there was a crash from the living room, a voice shouting something, and a scream, followed by crying. Hermione ran unsteadily into the room, and he followed.

There at her feet lay Ron, dead. In front of her were two Death Eaters, holding her daughter. Another one came up behind her and bound her with ropes, and cast a spell on her eyes, forcing them to remain open. Unable to keep her balance, she fell over. The Death Eater searched her and removed her wand, then all three of them removed their masks. Standing before her were Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rasbatan Lestrange.

“Mud-blood, we’ve been meaning to get to your family for sometime now. You and that blood traitor lying at your feet. We’ll we’re in the mood for some fun tonight, right boys?” the other two nodded. “All you have to do is lie there and enjoy the show.

Then she turned to Rodolphus and Rasbatan, who where holding the crying little girl by the arms. “Let her go.” She commanded, drawing her wand and pointing it at her. “Crucio!”

The little girl fell to the ground, screaming. By the time Bellatrix lifted the curse, Hermione had screamed herself hoarse. “Please,” she whispered. “Take me, kill me, let her go.”

“Silence!” screamed Bellatrix pointing her wand at her, “Crucio!” Hermione screamed in agony, and flailed around, going no where because of the ropes. Bellatrix lifted the spell and turned back to the crying little girl. Twirling her wand in mid-air, she conjured a dagger.

“Now,” she laughed, “On with the show.”

She walked over to where the little girl lay, and she robes obscured their vision. They heard her piercing screams, and when Bellatrix turned and moved out of the way, he retched on the spot. Hermione’s scream was loud and resounding, and he was amazed he was able to keep from screaming himself. The little girl’s eyes had been gouged out.

The memory began to cloud, and Severus left her mind, thinking she must have fainted right after. When he opened his eyes, he was back in his quarters, and Hermione was sobbing, cries wracking through her body. He took her into his arms and held her while she cried. He had no comforting words for her, not after what he had just seen. He just held her. And for Hermione, it was enough.
