Chapter 2
Mutant VS. Magic
Chapter 2
Hermione entered the medical bay. Charles was there and so was Logan. Despite Hermione arguing it wasn’t a good idea, Logan had stated that he would be fine. She let out a calming breath and moved to stand behind Jean’s head. She placed her hands on either side of the red head’s head, closed her eyes, and slowly entered her mind.
*Inside Jean’s Mind*
“Jean! Jean where are you? It’s Hermione, please answer me!” Hermione called out into the darkness, her voice echoing loudly.
Off to her left she caught a glimmer of light. In the light she found Jean. Hermione slowly moved to her friend who looked frightened and confused. “Hermione? What’s going on?”
“Jean, the Phoenix broke through. Scott had gone to Alkali Lake, do you remember anything that happened after you were awakened?” Hermione questioned.
“Yes, the first thing I saw was Scott. Then, I don’t know,” Jean answered.
“Jean, listen to me. You saw what happened. I need to know what happened after you saw Scott. Right now he’s missing and I need your help to find him. Think!” Hermione instructed.
“Scott’s missing? Oh god. No! I wouldn’t have hurt him. I don’t know what happened!” Jean cried.
Hermione saw she was beginning to panic. She reached out and took Jean’s face in her own hands, forcing her to look into her eyes. “Jean, I don’t think the Phoenix killed him. I’m almost positive that you stopped her and in the process only knocked Scott out. I can’t find him without your help. Show me what happened!”
Suddenly, images began sliding by. Hermione watched the awakening of Jean and the Phoenix. Just as she and Charles had suspected, Scott had blasted the lake in his grief. Hermione watched as Jean stepped from the waters. She could tell that the Phoenix had taken control by the time she had reached Scott. Hermione gasped when she saw Scott remove his visors. As Scott and the Phoenix kissed, Hermione saw the struggle between Jean and the Phoenix in Jean’s eyes.
Suddenly, Scott went flying about twenty into the woods at the edge of the lake. After that, everything went black. Hermione faced Jean once more, “Jean, I know now Scott is fine. Knocked out, but alive. I’ll send Logan and Ororo to go get him. Listen to me very carefully. Fight her Jean. Don’t let her control you, it’s you that controls her, not the other way around,”
“She’s so strong. I can’t fight her,” Jean said desperately.
“That’s right, you can’t fight me,” an evil feminine voice echoed.
“Who are you! Show your self!” Hermione demanded.
“You know me Phoenix. As a kindred soul, you sense me just as I sense you. No matter what you do, you can’t save her and you know it,” the Phoenix laughed.
“I will do everything necessary to save Jean and send you straight to hell,” Hermione growled.
“As a sister Phoenix, you can’t kill me, just as I can’t kill you. YOU can’t save her Hermione. She is mine!”
“I’ll find a way. Jean, don’t give up,” Hermione said facing Jean again.
“I’ll try,” Jean replied.
Before Hermione could say anything else, a burst of energy came flying at her. The last thing she saw or heard was Jean’s terrified face and her voice crying her name.
*Exit Jean’s Mind*
“Hermione, talk to me. Please wake up,” Logan said as he gently patted her cheek.
“Ohhh. What happened?” Hermione moaned as she slowly came around.
“You were talking to Jean when you were thrown across the room,” Logan answered as he helped her to her feet.
“What did you see Hermione?” Charles asked.
“I saw Jean. I didn’t see the Phoenix, but I heard her. She was the one who threw me out of her mind. It was probably the same way she knocked Scott out. As for Scott, I saw him get blasted into the woods at the edge of the lake. If he took a hit stronger than I did, he will probably be waking up soon. I think Logan and Ororo should go. Just be sure to take an extra pair of his visors,” she explained.
“Logan, go get Storm. Hermione, you get the jet ready. I will go tell Hank. After you’ve prepared the jet, get some rest,” Charles instructed.
Logan and Hermione nodded. As Hermione made to leave, Logan grabbed her arm. “When I get back, you and I need to talk,”
“Okay. I’ll be waiting,” she smiled up at him.

Rogue sat in the living room staring out the window thinking about her situation with her boyfriend Bobby. She wanted to take the next step, but because of her mutation, she couldn’t without possibly killing him. She let out a heavy sigh.
“You all right?” Harry asked as he sat beside her.
“Yeah, just thinking. Who are you?” Rogue asked.
“Harry. I’m a friend of Hermione’s,” Harry answered as he extended his hand to her.
“Rogue,” she smiled as she took his hand.
“No offense, but what kind of a name is that?” he asked.
“My real name is Marie, but I made up Rogue when I ran away from home,” she explained.
“So, what’s your mutation?” he questioned.
“When I touch people, I take away their life force, but in mutants, I take their abilities for a time. If I touch a person for too long, I can kill them,” she said.
“Sounds like it can come in handy if you’re in trouble,” he smiled.
“Yeah, but I can never touch another person’s skin without nearly killing them,” she sighed.
“Look, I know what it’s like to fear something about you that you can’t control. Before I was born there was a prophecy made that I would have to face off with this dark Wizard. I can’t fight it no matter how hard I try. I have finally accepted that I have to do this. I know that’s not the same thing as what you’re going through, but I hope it offers you some comfort,” he replied.
“Thanks Harry. I’ll think about it. Maybe it will bring me some comfort,” she smiled softly.

“So, you are sure that this will work?” Voldemort asked Eric as they made their way to a run down building with Pyro and Lucius.
“We need an army of mutants to go up against Charles and his X-Men. This is where we will find them,” Eric answered.
Lucius just glared at Eric. He didn’t fully trust the mutant. He followed them into the building. As Eric made his little speech to the other mutants gathered, Lucius thought hard about the situation he now found himself in.
‘We don’t need these abominations. I wish the Dark Lord would listen to me and just turn away from this. We can take of the Wizarding world without their help. Perhaps I should just wait and bide my time. I’m sure an opportunity will present itself on how to get out of this,’ he thought.
Twenty minutes later, he was walking with his master to try and locate a mutant named Mystique.

Hermione laid in her bed trying to fall asleep, but was having a hard time. All she could think about was Logan and hoping everything went well on his mission with Storm to find Scott.
‘I need to rest. I won’t be doing anyone any good if I’m exhausted,’ she thought.
Hermione rolled onto her side, pulled the teddy bear Logan had won for her the summer before at the carnival and slowly drifted off to sleep. Her mind finally at ease and not racing a mile a minute.
