After they left the kitchen they made their way to the library, to make use of the secure floo connection to the Gryffyndor common rooms. Professor McGonagall had had it set up earlier in the holidays, in an effort to keep them distracted from order business; they were allowed to floo to Hogwarts and spend their days there. With the conditions that they remained inside, didn’t bother any of the staff (unless there was an emergency), and stayed out of the Restricted Section of the library. Once in Hogwarts they quickly made their way to the library, taking a detour to avoid Mrs Norris out of long ingrained habit. Reaching the library Hermione organised both boys instructing their search. Hermione had decided it would be faster for them to search separately, so had given them a description of the book and what she believed to be it’s title and sent them on their way.
Time had flown by and before they knew it, it was late afternoon. Harry was now surrounded by books that matched her description and was slowly going through each of them in turn. He scanned another book and was about to toss it onto the read pile, that had been steadily growing, when he realised what he’d just read and sat up excitedly, he’d found it! They had the spell. He was about to call out to let the others know but at the last minute decided to leave it, at least until he’d checked the spell to see if it would work as Hermione remembered. He’d also check to make sure it wouldn’t be dangerous to perform. ‘Better safe than sorry’ he thought before copying the relevant section into his notebook. As he finished writing he heard Ron start to complain,
“Can we finish now…? Please Hermione, we worked through lunch! Can’t we come back tomorrow? I don’t want to miss out on dinner too. Besides that’d make Mum suspicious, y’know.” He finished up somewhat smugly.
“Oh fine. Let’s just tidy away the books we got out first.” she said before glancing pointedly in Harry’s direction. He gave her a sheepish grin and made a great show of returning each book to its proper place on the shelves, after a little while Hermione and Ron moved to help him. With the three of them working together, they soon restored order to Madam Pinch’s domain and left to go home to Mrs Wesley’s dinner.
Ginny watched the trio from her seat between Professors Snape and Lupin. She knew they were up to something. They were practically broadcasting guilty vibes. She could tell from the way Professor Snape was watching them that he could see it too. She let out a quiet huff; she was fed up of being left out. They’d been doing it all holiday. It was unfair at least at school she had her friends here it was just the four of them or as it turned out, the three of them and her. She knew they were up to something yesterday.
She couldn’t believe they hadn’t mentioned anything to her; she could have at least covered for them. ‘Well fine! If they won’t include me, I won’t help them.’ she thought, annoyed at them, before turning back to her conversation with the adults and ignoring the three idiots.
After lingering over her breakfast, enjoying listening to her teacher’s discussion on defence techniques, she made her way to the Black library. ‘May as well do some of my homework, it’s not like I have anything better to do.’ she thought as she got out her charms essay. Ginny spent most of the morning working on her homework, after she finished her second essay she decided to stretch out on one of the loveseats with a book and relax for a while before lunch. After reading for a couple of hours she felt her eyelids grow heavy and gradually fell into a disturbed, nightmare filled sleep.
Ginny found herself in a darkened room alone with the younger, more handsome version of the Dark Lord. This was not just a nightmare she’d had on a regular basis since he’s return, the young girl had lived this, she dreamt of the memories she had left of him, some were good but most were bad. In her current dream Tom was trying to convince her to free the basilisk again, he wanted her to hurt her friends, her brother’s friend whom he called mudblood. He held her tightly by her wrists pulling her closer to him; he towered over her as he commanded the frightened girl.
“You will obey me!”
Severus, who’d been on his way to lunch, walked past the open library door and heard a muffled scream from within. He rushed into the room, wand drawn, expecting an attack. Instead he found Ginny struggling against something in her sleep, returning his wand to its hiding place; he strode over to wake her as it became apparent the nightmare was getting worse. As he leant down to shake her awake she suddenly screamed out.
“No I won’t do it! I won’t…No! You can’t make me!”
As she began to scream again he quickly reached out and roughly began to shake her shoulder. She jerked awake and sat up with a slight gasp. Looking around in disorientation, before focusing on him with what appeared to be relief; not an emotion he was used to seeing when someone recognized him. He quirked a single eyebrow ‘That must have been quite the nightmare she had.’ He thought slightly amused at her reaction.
“Well, Miss Weasley, perhaps you could enlighten me to what could cause you to scream in terror in your sleep?”
“Sorry Professor, just a bad dream…that’s all just a bad dream.” She answered tensely, turning away from his searching look, seemingly trying to convince herself more than him.
“Hmmm, I am quite sure it was.” He said, watching her immediately start to relax at his apparent acceptance of her dismissing the nightmare, before adding silkily, “What was it you couldn’t be made to do precisely, Miss Weasley?”
At that her head snapped around and she locked eyes with him he took the opportunity to use legillmancy on her, he had a feeling that the nightmare was more than it appeared and all his years as a spy had taught him never to disregard his feelings. He’d just caught a glimpse of a young man, bearing an uncanny resemblance to a younger Dark Lord, who was threatening the girl, when he was interrupted and had to release her mind. It was the mutt and the wolf. Joy. He watched in distaste as the Sirius came bounding over to them followed more sedately by Lupin.
“Hey, hey, what’s happening in here then?” Sirius said glancing suspiciously at Snape who was looming over a slightly scared looking Ginny. Snape just sneered at him and swept from the room. Ginny hurriedly explained that the professor had just woken her from a nightmare, before glancing at the time and suggesting the made their way to lunch. As she sat down to eat she noticed that the trio weren’t there after some careful questioning of her mum, she found that they had not been seen since breakfast. When they’d finished lunch and helped clean up the kitchen, Ginny, Sirius and Remus made their way to the parlour where they settled in for a lively afternoon discussing past pranks the twins and Marauders had participated in, telling jokes and amusing stories and generally getting to know each other.
