Dismissed
"Can't you do something, Professor?" Hermione asked Snape hopefully.
He turned back to face the girl, clearly confused as to why she should still be present after having been dismissed. "If there was something I could do about this project, I would have done, and this project certainly wouldn't have been introduced in my class to begin with. You are DISMISSED, Miss Granger."
"But...my grade, sir," was all she could say. The 'baby' seemed to be gearing up for quite a big fit. His face was beet red; fists balled up tight; little mouth working, issuing grunts that promised to be loud wails any second. Hermione hoisted the little one up to let his head rest on her shoulder and began to pat him lightly on the back. She had seen that done before...on muggle television. "I just don't think it's fair that my grade should suffer because..."
*because you won't help me...* she thought.
"...because there were an odd number of students in our class," the baby was not consoled by it's new position in Hermione's arms and began to really let go, his wails filling the Potions classroom. Hermione continued to pat the baby's back and sway back and forth. She didn't know what else to do.
"Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for you to have experienced unfairness for the first time in your life, Miss Granger," Snape began in a disinterested monotone, "Perhaps, one day, you will be able to move on. Until that day, however, you will have to deal with this hardship. You are DISMISSED." He again turned his back to her and shuffled through parchments on his desk.
Angry, frustrated and defeated, Hermione stared at Snape's back for a moment. She decided against saying anything further, more due to the fact that the 'baby' was now screaming nearly as loud as a mandrake than a lack of barbed insults of her own. She stopped patting the baby, drew her wand and gathered all her things into her bag with a flick of her wrist. She flung her bag over her free shoulder and headed for the door. The baby's sobs broken every few seconds by his attempts to suck on his fist whenever it happened to come near enough his mouth.
"He's hungry," Snape said quietly.
Hermione paused in the doorway and looked over her shoulder. "Pardon?"
Snape looked over his shoulder as well and repeated, "He's hungry...requires nutrition, Miss Granger. Food. Can I make myself any clearer?"
Hermione set her jaw and marched from the classroom, allowing the door to slam shut behind her. She was sure that points were disappearing from her house at that very moment, but didn't care...too much. Harry and Ron were waiting at the end of the corridor. Their own bundle of joy was sleeping soundly in Harry's arms.
Ron grimaced at the screaming baby and gave Hermione a sympathetic look. "Just found out who his 'Daddy' is, huh? I'd cry too."
"Ron, this is not funny in the least. This is a serious situation. My GRADE will suffer!"
"Yeah, well our EVERYTHING will suffer," Ron shot back, pointing at himself and then Harry, "I can't even imagine the joy and happiness that Fred and George will feel once they hear about this! It'll be better than Christmas holiday for those two!" Ron turned toward Harry, "You rekon we could defect to another common room? I don't even want to go near Gryffindor tower 'till this project is over."
Harry shrugged. His face held a pained expression as he also imagined all the fun his and Ron's situation would bring to the twins. The temperature started to become comfortable as they put more distance between themselves and the dungeons. 'Baby Snape' was fussing less than before.
Ron rubbed his stomach. "I'm starved," he said and started in the direction of the Great Hall. Harry followed but Hermione headed for a different staircase. "Hermione? Aren't you coming to eat?" Ron asked.
"No...I'm not hungry. I've got to find out what to do about this..." she looked down her 'baby.' He was still red faced and cranky. Hermione sighed and ascended the stairs leading to Gryffindor tower.
