Fire and Fortitude
Chapter 3. “As soon go kindle fire with snow, as seek to quench the fire of love with words.”
The wizarding community at large continued about its work, the dull day in day out bane of small bugs that endured until some larger bug came crashing at their reality. For so long and regardless of fact everything was pinned upon one small boy.
Neither age nor time could broaden shoulders weighed down by others insecurities and ideals.
Within only a few heartbeats of Harry awakening smiles were again pinned to faces and a spring added to every step. Every step and face save those of an exclusive club of marked men and serpents.

Snape prepared himself for morning. His walk had been lonely and unsatisfying; his soul tortured and craven. A warm embracing shower heated skin but still the blood ran cold.
He paused before his mirror. Without a shirt the marks upon his shoulder were still obvious at least to him. Sweet scars where Victor had shared his gift lightly twice yet in hindsight Snape knew not why he had resisted the third mark. Vaguely he wondered what life would be like if he had just surrendered to the kiss.
*Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich-man, poor-man, beggar-man, thief* counted Snape as he did up his copious buttoning *doctor, lawyer, wizard, merchant, warlock, chief* At one time the counting fell on beggar-man so he added four more.
The buttons served two-fold in taking time out to do them up manually instead of hastily spelling them he had time to compose himself for the day ahead, plus it gave him a sense of security.
He tied his long hair back from his face capturing it below the nape in a black velvet ribbon. With one last glance to assure an impeccable presentation he spun on his heel and billowed into the day.

“I’m fine honest” Harry wriggled and waved everything by way of demonstration. Between Poppy fussing and Dumbledore twinkling and nodding things were drifting from bizarre to total weirdsville.
At long last questions were exhausted and suspicions seemed satisfied. Given a clean bill of health and forbidden to travel anywhere even within the school compounds alone Harry made a dash for freedom.

Assailed on every side by well wishers, Harry found the care and concern overwhelming. Feeling uncommonly emotional he but chalked it up to the lack of affection in his past and perhaps the five weeks of nothingness.
In the clamour of the Great Hall voices melted into each other yet with startling clarity he heard “… should be dead the bastard mudblood”
Inside of a second he scanned the entire room; everyone and everything seemed frozen. He stood on the bench to see over the well wishers to where he thought the voice was from and still not one soul moved.
He glanced feverishly around and in shock found himself face to face with Snape. “Sit down. Now. Do NOT mention this to anyone” the dulcet tones washed across his soul “See me later”
Harry sat. Everything proceeded uninterrupted. This was going to be one very odd day. He looked carefully around the hall all seemed commonplace. He stole a fleeting glance at the teachers table and noticed ebony eyes guardedly watching.
