Watching Over Her

After several minutes of silence Ron finally turned to Harry and spoke.

"I don't know what to say, Harry. It's so unbelievable." He said, the tears in his eyes subdued.

"I know. But you don't have to say anything Ron, it's the way it is and we can't change it. I just need you to be strong for me. And I need you to promise me something, one last promise." Harry said, walking to Ron.

"Anything."

"I need you to promise me that during the final battle, when it's me and him, you keep Hermione away. I don't want her to see me die. I know she's going to want to be there, in case I need help, but hold her back. Don't let her watch. I need you to do that for me." Harry pleaded, putting his hand on Ron's arm, and squeezing, almost painfully hard.

"I will, don't worry. I'll make sure she isn't there, if it's the last thing I do." Ron looked to the ground, fearing his emotions would get the best of him again. Harry walked to the door of Hermione's room and opened it slightly, looking in. He saw she was in a deep sleep, and he smiled. "You go ahead and go to sleep, mate. I'm going to sit in here and watch over her. I cast a charm on the fireplace so no one can see the smoke or light from outside. We should be safe for tonight. Good night, Ron."

"Night, mate. You try and get some sleep too. You need it more than any of us." Harry gave Ron a weak smile and closed the door behind him.

Once inside the room, Harry had to wait for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He found a chair and posted it by the one window. He propped it to where he could see out of the window and still see Hermione. He walked to Hermione's sleeping form and pulled the covers up around her better and kissed her forehead. He sat in the chair and before long found himself falling asleep.

****They were running through a forest, someone was chasing them, probably Death Eaters. Hermione tripped and fell and was suddenly thrown in the air.

"I'll kill you this time you filthy mudblood!!!"

It was Dolohov, the bastard, and he had Hermione suspended in midair. She was screaming for Harry right before he shot a spell that flung her into a large tree. Her lifeless body slid to the ground, the sound of her neck breaking still ringing into the night air.****

"HERMIONE!!!"

Hermione jumped in bed as she heard her name screamed, just as Harry's chair slid from it's perch and he crashed to the floor. She jumped out of the bed and practically jumped across the room to him. Harry was breathing heavily and trying to get his ground, when she came to his side.

"What is it, Harry?" To Hermione's surprise the second she spoke he enveloped her in his strong arms. She could barely breathe, but slowly reached her arms around his neck and held him. His breathing calmed before too long and his embrace softened. "Shhh. It's okay. I'm right here. Everything is okay. It was just a dream." Hermione tried to comfort him. He pulled away from her and looked her deep in her eyes. The intensity of his stare sent chills down her spine.

"He killed you, Dolohov, broke your neck." Harry said in a shaky breath. Tears stood still in his eyes, and Hermione felt a sense of warmth that a dream of her dying could have this effect on him. "I can't lose you. I don't know what I would do?"

"You're not going to lose me, Harry. I'll always be right here, by your side, no matter what. You know I would never leave you." Hermione said, and through the moonlight coming in the window, Harry could see a small smile on her face. With that smile, the same one he had seen a million times, something in him snapped. He brought his one hand from her waist and caressed her cheek with it. His stare intensified and Hermione's smile faded. "What is it, Harry?"

"You're beautiful, have I ever told you that? You've always been there for me, no matter what. You're my best friend and I know I wouldn't be alive right now if it weren't for you. I've been so scared before. And I don't know why? But your smile, just now, it broke down a wall and I don't care anymore." Hermione held a questioning gaze on her face and Harry's other hand came to join his other at her cheek. He held her face in his hands, and did something she hadn't seen him do in three weeks, he smiled.

"Harry, I don't know what to say or what is going on, but I.." Hermione was cut off by Harry lips on hers. She was stiff at first, but as the shock wore off she began to respond. When Harry begged for entrance to her mouth, she fully complied. The kiss was tender one moment and aggressive the next. They broke the kiss to get some air, and Hermione couldn't believe what was happening.

She had loved Harry for as long as she could remember. She watched as he fell in love with two other women, her heart breaking each time. Knowing he would never go for his bookworm, best friend, with bushy hair and sometime stuck up attitude. And she still didn't know what this meant. Did this mean he felt the same or was it a moment of weakness. Harry cleared his throat, trying to snap her from her thoughts. She looked to him and saw a small smile on his swollen lips.

"Stop trying to analyze this, and just enjoy it." She giggled at him, slightly amused he knew what she doing. "I don't know how to tell you this in any grand way, cause I've never said it before, so I'll just tell you." Harry paused and Hermione's heart fell, knowing it would be some sorry excuse for kissing her but not meaning anything by it. She looked to the floor, waiting for the painful blow. "I love you, Hermione. I have for quite some time and I didn't know how to tell you." Hermione looked to Harry and tears brimmed her eyes. "Please don't cry,Hermione. My dream tonight, it taught me something. And I believe it's something you said to me once a long time ago. You know how you love to quote. 'It's better to have love and lost, thennever loved at all.' If I lost you I would hate myself for never telling you and getting to experience love with while I had the chance. Do you agree?" Harry waited on Hermione's answer, praying she would say yes, so he knew he did the right thing and when the time came for him to die, she would remember what she said.

"Yes." Hermione whispered, a tear falling down her cheek. "I have always loved you, Harry. You have no idea how happy I am right now. I have longed to hear you say that. I love you so much." Hermione flung herself at Harry and kissed him again. She pulled away and hugged tight. Pulling on her Gryffindor courage she turned to Harry's ear. "Make love to me." She slowly whispered into his ear.
