Picking up the pieces
Picking Up The Pieces
To say Lucius Malfoy was shocked out of his skin is an understatement.
Had his ears deceived him? Why would Arthur call Bill and Charlie bastards? He dared not go where his thoughts were leading him. It couldn’t be that….
“Well, well well. Looks like the weasels has got trouble in para...” Draco was cut off by Lucius.
“Shut the fuck up Draco!” Draco stared at his father in awe. In his fifteen years of life, not once had he heard him swear.
Lucius sharpened his ears, trying to catch what was said, she was nearly whispering now.
“It’s not like I ever had a choice! It was ‘do or die’ on my part. My parents told me to either marry you, or take The Mark. I didn’t have just my own life to look after, you know. With Dumbledore running around killing every pureblood that hadn’t sworn their life to him, I couldn’t risk it.”
A murmur buzzed through the crowd.
“Now, I think that I made the wrong choice. I fucked up royally. Should have taken The Mark over you. I was pregnant, with a man I really loved, who loved me.”
Lucius gaped, opening and closing his mouth like a fish.
“Flies father” Draco snickered. He glared at his son, but turned his attention back to the low voice in the middle of the crowd.
“He took The Mark for me, so I didn’t have to. Voldemort was happy with just the one of us. He gave up his freedom, his life, for me! I can’t even stop to say hello to him, because you don’t have enough self-control to not verbally kill him every time he comes within fifty feet of me. You’re right, I DO HATE YOU.”
Lucius had dived head first into his own chaotic mind, thoughts flying like missiles. ‘She really loved me. She didn’t leave for another. Forced marriage. Bill and Charlie.’ He snapped his eyes open just in time to see the crowd parting in front of him, and an angry mess of red hair running straight into his chest.
She bounced back and fell. Lucius reacted instinctively and wrapped his arms around her tiny waist before she hit the ground. She raised her head and Lucius gazed into a pair of unfocused, but familiar dark blue eyes. Both pleasant and painful memories ripped through his head. She stared to slip again, so he tucked his left arm underneath her knees and lifted her up close to him. He settled her carefully in his arms, her head resting in his shoulder. A lock of icy blond hair had fallen out of his low and loose ponytail.
Lucius let his eyes linger on her sleeping features, his expression softening. She was still the light, small and temperamental beauty as the last time he held her nineteen years ago. His Melanie had not changed a bit.
The surprises were never-ending for Draco today; first he sweared, then he did something nice, which he was used to- his dad being a softy, but never in public, and only towards him when they were alone.
Lucius Malfoy was a classic Bad Boy, and Draco knew it well. He had been taught every trick in the ‘Malfoy Book Of Manipulations’. In private and in public the Malfoy men were completely different people, and it was not for no reason.
“Um, Dad, maybe you should…take care of him before you go all…um, yeah” Draco said pointing at a very pissed off and red faced Arthur Weasley, who had made his way to the end of the parted crowd.
“Unhandle my wife this instant you… you… you Death Eater!!!”
Lucius’ icy exterior was back on display. He was nothing short of pissed himself, but he, unlike a certain hot head, had the common sense to have his tantrums in the privacy of his own home, preferably in his recording studio in the dungeons.
“Mr. Weasley, I think that” he made a dramatic pause, took his time to pull a face of dicust. “…you wife…made it very clear that she did not want to see you, let spent any length of time in your company at the moment. As for being a Death Eater, and I am not saying that I am, at least the Dark Lord takes care of his own, unlike your precious Dumbledore.”
“How dare you insult Dumledore, he is the greatest wiz..”
“…ard of all time, yeah. Heard it before, but if that is the case, why doesn’t he finish off Riddle himself, instead of forcing an orphaned, abused child fight for him? James and Lily are sitting upright in their graves.”
“…!”
Lucius sighed loudly. “I did not come here to have a petty argument with you, but your face seem to be where ever I turn. Now, if you don’t mind, not that I care, I will take Melanie here to Malfoy Manor, where she can recover from all of this, took quite a toll on her as you can see. Not even to mention a well deserved time-out from cooking and kids.”
“The only kids giving her trouble is her two bastard sons getting themselves nearly killed in a muggle car crash.”
“Bill and Charlie?” Arthur nodded furiously, his temper cooling down, as he saw that Lucius’ mind was made up.
“If I understand you correctly, the boys are not your sons”
“I believe I have made that very clear Mr. Malfoy”
Lucius now had severe trouble keeping his anger concealed. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
“And you thought that this was just the perfect to address this issue? Knowing Mel, she probably hasn’t left their side for a second all week.”
Lucius yanked his head for Draco to come with in his line of sight, he was not going to move more than necessary with the unconscious witch in his arms.
“Draco, could you please notify the staff board of St. Mungo’s and the boys’ healers of that I want to meet with them as soon as I arrive.”
“Yes, father” Draco hurried along. He knew better that to test his fathers’ patience when he was in a bad mood, now he was virtually pissed off. Other people may not be seeing it, but he could feel it coming off his father in tsunamis.
Lucius did not want to loose his temper in front of his son. With Draco out of sight he let his anger and hate shine through his eyes. He was seething. He sneered at Weasley.
“I usually don’t approve of foul language…” he cast a wand less silencing charm around Molly’s head. “ …But what in the blazing fucking bloody depths of hell were you thinking!!” He was yelling at the very top of his voice.
The crowds were gathering around them. Lucius glanced around and decided it was time for his departure.
“I’ll be seeing you Weasley” Then he disappeared in a low ‘pop’.
Arthur was at loss. He didn’t know what to do. He knew he had fucked up royally, but he didn’t care. He didn’t ever want to see her again.
