Make It Right

Lily sat happily with her legs dangling above the ground. Her mother was still sitting on her knees in front of her, the woman’s attention still on the two gorgeous men further down the path. “Mommy?” she called out, wondering what was wrong with her mother.

“What?” Lilith shook her head as she came out of her thoughts. “Um, yes sweetie. You stay here. I’m going to go get you an ice cream at the café where Keith is. I’ll be back in a minute. Don’t leave the swings ok?” She patted her daughter affectionately on the back and stood up. She never taught Lily to call her husband “daddy”. Keith wasn’t her father, and never would be if Lilith had anything to say about it. “What flavor do you want honey?”

“App’e Pie and Van’ia,” Lily smiled up at her.

Lilith sighed sadly. “You mean apple pie and vanilla please,” she sounded out the words for her daughter. She hated the way Lily tended to shorten her words like Keith. It was an awful habit.

“Appol pie and vanilla pwease,” Lily repeated, trying hard to pronounce the words correctly.

“Good girl,” Lilith smiled as she headed off to the café for the ice cream.

Lilith always stressed things like that because she wanted her daughter to get a good education and have a better life than she did. She didn’t want Lily to have a life that consisted of only four things: cooking and cleaning, childbirth, satisfying a disgusting husband’s disgusting needs, and last but not least, dealing with the cuts and bruises from number three. Lily was going to see the world, and she was going to marry a man she loved. Lilith was not going to let her settle for less. Her baby was going to have a happy life and that was final.

After Cassander left, Tom decided to stay and enjoy the park for a while. He entered the nearest café with his mind set on a chocolate and vanilla ice cream. He could’ve easily conjured more, but somehow muggle made ice cream tasted better.

Tom found that he liked the little cozy café, except for one thing. There was a fat disgusting muggle in a plastic chair that looked like it was about to break under his weight. He was downing pint after pint of beer; some of the amber liquid was even dripping down his chin. Tom couldn’t help but shudder in disgust.

Then he saw the woman again, the one with the red hair. She was wearing a white summer dress with black lace trimming. Her shoes were light green ballerina flats that had little bows on them that held a gem in the center. The sun was playing with the different shades of red in her hair. When she turned her hair almost looked like fire. Tom stood transfixed. This woman was beautiful. One could even say she was magical.

Lilith’s eyes quickly swept the small café as she entered. She headed towards the very drunk looking Keith. How he had managed to become so plastered in such a short time was beyond her. Then she noticed the same gorgeous man standing by the counter. She still had the nagging feeling that she knew him from somewhere. She just couldn’t remember where.

Keith caught her attention again by gulping down the last of his beer; spilling half of it on his shirt. Lilith closed her eyes and inhaled deeply.

“Lilith…” he called out.

She slowly exhaled. As bad as Keith was when he was sober, he was worse when he’d had a few pints. When sober he left her alone for the most part. His excuse was that touching her made him feel dirty. She was ‘impure’ as he put it. So he only bothered to acknowledge her existence when he was horny. But when he was drunk, that was when he was at his cruelest.


“Lilith… C’ mere…“ he growled again, beer and saliva now soaking his shirt.

“Yes, dear?” she answered sullenly.

“I’m go’ in t’ the pub t’ get som’in real t’ drink.”

“Fine, I’ll see you at dinner,” she crossed her fingers hoping she wouldn’t. Eating at the same table as that hog made her sick to her stomach

Tom smiled when he heard the disgusting pig say the woman’s name. He now knew that the beautiful creature’s name was Lilith. He also remembered seeing her with a child. Tom knew that if she was talking to the slob that he must be her husband. Tom winced at the thought. ‘How could such a gorgeous woman be married to that?’ he asked himself. Soon images of her crushed beneath the pig started floating around in his head. A shiver ran down his spine as he fought back the nausea.

He was jolted back to reality when the man suddenly grabbed the woman’s hand and jerked to pull himself up. The woman lost her balance and fell. Tom’s gut reaction was to use a slowing charm to cushion her fall a little. The next thing he did was to cast a steadying spell on the fat man. The last thing the poor woman needed was to be flattened by her husband. As soon as the man was steady on his feet, he wobbled out, not giving a second thought to his wife.

It was another young woman who rushed over to help Lilith. “Gods Lil, why did you ever marry him?” she asked once Lilith was back on her feet. “Everyone who knows you two knows you don’t love him. And don’t say it was because you were pregnant. It’s plain to see that he’s not Lily’s father. I mean look at her… Her father must’ve been a real looker.”

“From the little I can remember, he was,” Lilith answered as she brushed herself off.

She quickly bought the ice cream and hurried out of the café away from all the prying eyes. She eyed the playground looking for Lily, but her daughter was no where to be found. “Lily…” she called out, panic rising in her chest. There was nothing but silence. She spun around in circles looking frantically for any sign of her daughter. “Lily!” she screamed one last time before sinking to her knees.
