Nine of Cups

Chapter 3: Nine of Cups - Wish and you shall receive, if you are willing to sacrifice

Draco Malfoy, the Slytherin prince, stood before the old oak door in the depths of the dungeon trying to will his fear to subside. He had spent all of Saturday researching the ghost known as Madam Morgan and had become unnerved at the lack of information found on her. The few seventh years that knew of her existence said that going to her for any reason was asking for bad fortune to fall on your head. But Draco had to try, he couldn’t bare the idea of Harry Potter winning his beloveds heart. Gathering his nerve he reached out and opened the latch, allowing the door to swing inward slowly.

He was astonished by what he saw, the room was decorated in Slytherin green and silver, a large fireplace sunk into the far wall and stood ablaze. Two large sofas sat in the center of the room on a green rug, a dark wood coffee table resting between them. Next to the fire sat a large overstuffed leather chair, and upon the chair, gazing into the fire, sat the ghost of a woman, who in her day must have been very beautiful.

“Come in and shut the door young Malfoy, before Professor Snape catches hold of you.” Madam Morgan’s voice was soft but firm.

Draco did as he was told, leaning against the door after it had been closed, he mulled over the right words to express why he’d come but found that the ghost seemed to know his intentions better then he did.

“Your desires can be fulfilled. The young Ravenclaw Celeste Faye can be at your side by years end.” She announce without looking at him. “This I can do for you, but you will have to prove your worth to me first.”

He stood, his mouth ajar as her words sunk in, he would have to ‘prove his worth’… thoughts of his recurring nightmare sunk into his mind and he felt himself shiver. “How can I do that?”

“Tomorrow night you will return here to me, and I will test your worthiness. There are others who feel great desire for this girl you love, so I shall decide which among you is most worthy of my help.” She answered.

Swallowing hard he nodded, biting back the desire to tell her exactly what he thought of her testing him. However he had heard from the member of his house who had gone to her in years past that to outwardly challenge the ghostly figure would end in the greatest loss he would ever know.

She smiled, though he could not see it, “You may leave now young Malfoy. The professor has fled from these corridors back to his rooms. He does not like my little piece of the castle. I frighten him.”

Draco moved to open the door, pausing for a moment to contemplate her words he had never known Severus Snape to be afraid of anything short of the Dark Lord himself.
