Where?

Chapter 2: Where?
by Michelle

Hermione watched the anguish raked Draco Malfoy, as he pulled at his clothes and scratched at his skin. He was breathing in short gasps and sobs, and was looking up at the sky, perhaps in prayer.

She wasn’t sure how long she stood watching him like that, but slowly he calmed down. He was no longer crying, and his breathing had evened out. He slowly brought down his chin and looked at his hands. When he saw them he began to lash out, panting, looking like he was about to scream. He rubbed his hands together through the water as though he was trying to clean them, and when it did work he kicked at the water as like it had done him wrong.

Watching Draco’s actions, Hermione was not sure what to think. Whatever was wrong with the young man in front of her, it appeared to be all consuming. Even through her extreme dislike for him, she wondered what in the world could bring him such anguish that he would stand in the middle of a lake on Hogwarts’ grounds. Didn’t he know if he was spotted here he was liable to be hung by his toenails from the ceiling in the great hall before he could say “fizzing whizbee?” They were living in an ask questions later kind of world now.

She moved forward closer to him, he was just standing now, muttering, she couldn’t make out what he was saying. She considered her options. She could curse him and immobilize him and well really do whatever she wanted to him, she could confront him and find out why he was there, or she could go and get help.

The responsible thing would be to go and get help, she knew it would be, but she didn’t want to. Finally, she resolved to sit down on the shore and wait to see what would happen next. She could always go and get someone in a few minutes. She turned to sit down, settling on the lake shore. Then, as she was turning back she heard a splash. She couldn’t see him anymore.

The water was disturbed like someone was swimming in it but she could not see him. She stood back up abruptly and rushed forward into the water. She scanned left and right and finally dove into the water to see if she could see him below the surface. When she came back up she was soaked from head to toe, the leaves now matted in her hair. Suddenly, she had no better idea of where he was at that moment than she had had an hour before. She mentally cursed herself for not getting help when she had the chance. She turned and walked onto the shore, and decided to get someone who would help her look for him.

Five steps later she stopped cold. Leaning against her tree was Draco Malfoy staring directly at her, his wand was drawn.

She scrambled, looking for her wand, by the time she found it he was standing nose to nose with her sneering.

“Well you certainly haven’t changed now have you Granger?” he sneered, “You never could take care of yourself without those sorry excuses for wizards hanging about you.”

“What are you doing here Malfoy?” she stammered, her nerves betraying her.

“Just, washing up,” he stated vaguely.

“In the lake?” she asked incredulously.

“Never you mind Granger, it is nothing you will have to worry about much longer,” he drawled.

She looked at him, not sure what to do. “What do you mean I won’t have to worry much longer? You honestly think you can take me out?” she questioned.

“Oh, I could,” he answered, “but I have other plans tonight.” And with that he muttered a sleeping charm, and grabbed her arms lowering her to the ground. He stared at her a moment, her sleeping face still frozen in shock. She would wake in an hour or so and hardly remember if his being there was a dream or reality. He dried her robes with a swish of his wrist, and then he turned and walked away.

A/N: I know this is short, but I wanted to be the one to add the next part. Doing a story this way is a great idea, and I am glad I can participate.
