Randi sat back down at her desk and began to write in a notebook that sat beneath the DADA textbook. In a few minutes, a large, grey owl came in and dropped neatly rolled piece of parchment on her desk. “Thank you, Guinevere.” She said, smiling at the owl as it lighted on the desk and stared at her as if expecting something. She pulled the red string that held the parchment closed and read what was written.
Princess Aranda,
My name is Torin. I believe you were well acquainted with my cousin Astor back in America. Having heard so much about you from him, I could not pass up this opportunity to meet you in person. You are hereby cordially invited to attend our Harvest Festival this Friday evening. I will await you at the entrance to the Forbidden Forest at eight o’clock. You may bring companions if you wish. It will be a great pleasure to finally meet the one my brother is so fond of.
Sincerely,
Torin Chai
She looked at the parchment intently for a minute, and then it slowly disappeared. It didn’t take much to decide whom she was going to invite. Young Mr. Potter and his friends were bound to enjoy the festival every bit as much as she did. She’d never missed a single one back home. All the dancing, singing, drumming and flute playing had made for the most pleasant evenings she could remember. It was a much-needed reprieve in a life that was otherwise filled with nothing but hard work and constant examinations. If Torin were anything like his brother, there would be many kegs of ale and bottles of mead thrown into the mix as well. This was going to be so much fun!
Suddenly a familiar feeling came over her. Not looking up from the desk, she casually said, “What do you want, Professor?”
Severus calmly strode in to the classroom and stood across the desk from her. “Answers, for starters. I’ve just been in contact with Morlott’s School in America. Strange thing, no one there has ever heard of you. Apparently, you never were a student there.”
“I never said I went to school there, Professor.” She quipped as she closed the notebook on her desk and looked up at him, “Now do you have anything of interest to say?”
He placed both hands on her desk and leaned in towards her, sneering. “Where the hell are you from, Witch, and what are you doing at this school?”
She opened a small drawer in her desk and took out a small, glass ashtray and a pack of cigarettes. Severus waited as she took a cigarette out and lit it. “For someone who doesn’t seem to like me very much, you seem very eager to get to know me, Severus. May I ask why?”
“Don’t…call me by my first name, you filthy little mudblood.” he hissed as he drew his wand and aimed it directly at her, “And answer my question, or else.”
She took a long draw off of her cigarette; looking at his eyes instead of the wand he was threatening her with. “Or else what? Your precious Dark Lord will be angry?” Before he knew it, he was thrown off his feet and tossed in the air to land hard against the wall at the far end of the room.
As he reeled from the impact, she rose from her chair and glared at him, “I knew what you were from the moment I looked at you, you bastard! Don’t think for a second that I’m going to give you one shred of information that your master can use against me.”
Severus lay there, suddenly paralyzed. He couldn’t move or speak; all he could do was look at the Witch as she confidently strode towards him and peered down at his motionless form. “Let me make this perfectly clear for you. People who bully others eventually wind up meeting someone they can’t bully. Your Dark Lord’s reign is coming to an end, Professor. If I were you, I’d seriously reconsider whose side I’m on.”
With that, she stormed out of the classroom, leaving him behind. Ten minutes passed before he regained his ability to move. “What in Merlin’s name is she?” he gasped, hardly believing what he had just witnessed. How could she have possibly found out that he had been fooling Albus all these years? The old wizard himself didn’t even have a clue! What manner of magic was this that she wielded so easily? He had come here seeking answers, and now had nothing but more questions.
