Slowly but surely Hermione began to heal. She spoke little and smiled even less but her injuries at least were leaving her. The scratches on her face were the first to go followed by the ones on her arms but the gash on her back stayed open and painful and she had to take blood replenishing potions daily.
Harry and Ron knew she wasn't telling them something and pestered her about it but she wouldn't burden them with it. A week after she awoke for the first time Molly informed her that Daniel had been arrested. Hermione was glad. Now she could walk through the garden without looking over her shoulder every other step.
July passed and August began and finally the day came that Hermione had been anticipating and Harry and Ron had been fervently dreading. The day their Hogwarts letters came. Hermione ripped hers open but Harry and Ron left theirs untouched. Hermione shrieked and the boys grinned and enveloped her in a hug. They had known she would make head girl. She beamed at them, her first real smile in weeks.
"Congratulations Mya" Harry said with a grin.
"Thanks guys. Look I even get my own suite shared with the head boy of course, I wonder who that will be." The boys shrugged.
"Well open yours" Molly prompted and Harry and Ron looked at eachother uncomfortably and shook their heads. Hermione left them to it. She was already in the garden by the time the shouting began. She sat on a bench and stared into nothing. This would be the first year she would ride the Hogwarts express alone. Even in her first year she had sat with people and ever since then it had been Harry and Ron and she had never needed anyone else. She had semi friends who smiled at her and waved and laughed with her occasionally but none were really close to her. This year she wouldn't even have Crookshanks. Daniel had kicked him out into the streets at the beginning of the summer and Hermione had found him dead six days later.
She felt two pairs of eyes on her back one green and one blue and she turned to face her friends.
"We leave first thing tormorrow morning" Ron informed her and Hermione hugged them and kissed them on each cheek before wandering off into the forest. She walked far until she found her secret place. It was a glenn with a little stream and a large flat stump next to it. The grass was soft and warm sunlight shone into it. It was her little corner of paradise. She sat on the stump and pulled out a large red leather notebook and ink bottle and quill out of her bag.
Molly had given her the notebook telling her that perhaps keeping a journal would help her heal. Hermione had to admit that the diary had helped immensly. All her secrets and insecurities lay in its pages. Her worst fear was that someone would find and read it so she carried it everywhere. She wrote until it became too dark to see and she crept back to the burrow. Harry and Ron were already asleep and she wasn't hungry so she went straight up to bed.
When Hermione awoke in the morning she walked down to Harry and Ron's room purely out of habit and came wide awake when she remembered they weren't there. She opened the door. Indeed the beds were empty and made and on Harry's was an envelope adressed to her. Hermione smiled and ripped it open.
Dearest Hermione,
We miss you already and we haven't even left yet. We are sorry you aren't fit enough to come with us because you know that we will only just manage to bumble along without you. We know that you are keeping something from us but we have decided to let you tell us in your own time. Just know that when you are ready to talk about it we are here for you. We promise to visit at Hogwarts often. Say hello to everyone for us. We hope to see you soon,
Hugs,
Harry and Ron
Hermione sighed and a tear leaked out of her eye. When had her boys become men? She decided she might as well have breakfast so she got up but the thought of breakfast made her stomach roil and she abruptly threw up. She cleaned it up and shrugged. Obviously her body wasn't ready for the idea of breakfast so the walked back upstairs. She would eat later.
