Chapter Three

Ginny ground her teeth in agitation. Classes this year were killers and it didn’t help that a certain Slytherin was in all of her classes. Most of the time-when she was supposed to be taking notes-she found herself doodling his name across her parchment. She had to toss out quite a few bits because of it. Ginny couldn’t deny any longer that she held affections for the cold man.

Glancing at her calendar, Ginny realized the Halloween feast was tomorrow. It was way early in the year and she could see all ready that she would need help in Potions and Transfiguration. Resigning herself, Ginny put away the homework she had been working on and proceeded to Prof. Greene’s office.

Prof. Greene had taken over as the Transfiguration teacher and the Head of Gryffindor house. He’s a tall man with brown hair that is just touched with gray. He has a deep voice that made him sound much heavier than his small frame. He was usually a very kind man, but if you angered him he tended to hold a grudge.

Knocking softly, Ginny called out to her house head. His baritone voice rang out for her to enter. His office was rather bare except for a few odds and ends he had scattered about.

“Ah…hello, miss Weasley.” Greene greeted her from behind his desk. Motioning for her to take a seat, he asked, “How can I be of service today, young lady?”

“Professor Greene, I fear I’m in danger of failing yours and Professor Slughorn’s class. I need to know if I can be assigned a tutor?”

“Are you not friends with miss Granger?”

“Yes, sir, I am, but I don’t think it’d be a good idea for my best friend to try and tutor me. We laugh and cut up too much and Hermoine can never force someone to get their work done.”

“I do see your point,” Prof. Greene admitted thoughtfully. “Ok, miss Weasley. You will meet your class tutor in here tomorrow. Don’t worry. I’ll arrange everything and you two may eat your feast in here. Be here at six pm sharp.”

Ginny nodded her understanding before excusing herself. She hated the idea of not being with her friends during the feast. It was always a hilarious event. Unfortunately, sacrifices had to be made. Her grades were important if she was going to try for a teaching position here one day.

**********

Draco lay on his bed, waiting for sleep to overtake him. It was early, but he really wanted to end this day. All through class he could feel Ginny’s eyes on him, but instead of angering him, it gave him a light feeling. Deciding to further his advances for her, Draco got up. He knew sleep wouldn’t come until he dealt with the girl plaguing his mind.

Casting around for an idea, Draco remembered two things he had accidentally learned about the youngest Weasley. The first was her brilliant display of the Bat Boogie Hex he had witnessed, unwillingly and unfortunately. The other was her strange love for bats. He had heard her talking to a frazzled-looking Ravenclaw about in once.

‘And tomorrow is Halloween’ he thought to himself.

Satisfied with his idea, Draco grabbed a small rock he had kept for some unknown reason and a piece of parchment. He knew the transfiguration would be a snap, so he worked on the note. Twenty crumpled pieces later, he wrote one he was pleased with. Then he had to rewrite it in his best handwriting.

It read:

~Virginia~
Here is another gift for you. This one has nothing to do with your beauty. I’ve given up on trying to find a comparison of it. Instead I got you something I thought you’d like. She’s all ready trained so don’t worry. Just feed her fruit from time to time.
Sincerely,
Your Admirer
PS. Whistle twice to call her.

After he had folded the parchment and placed her name on it, he turned to the stone. It was a beautiful thing, solid black with silver lines spider webbing across it. He had had the special rock for as long as he could remember. Even though he’d miss the familiarity it held, Draco thought it was only proper to use this rock to give Ginny her present.

Setting it on the parchment, he said a simple word and waved his wand carefully. The rock disappeared in a cloud of blue smoke. In its place sat a small black fruit bat. When you looked closely, you could see the silver lines tingling across her body.

“Sit,” he told the little creature. Obediently, she sat. “Lie down.” The bat obeyed flawlessly. Draco ran through simple commands and a few trickier ones before he was content. He told the bat to stay on Ginny’s headboard when she got there and to be quiet. He wasn’t surprised when the little beast nodded. Happy with the effectiveness of his next present, he waved his wand and quickly teleported the note and new pet to her bedside table.

Just as he climbed back into bed, a note appeared beside him. Draco realized it must be from his head of house, Prof. Slughorn. Deciding to read it, Draco saw it was a formal request for him to tutor someone. He almost wrote ‘no,’ but a gut feeling made him scribble ‘yes.’ Draco sent the note back and lay back down. Sleep overcame him finally as he was wondering who the student was.
