BETA: The Goblet and Tall oaks
Part – 3
Severus Snape chopped the fresh, somewhat pungent aconite leaves, and then taking them in his hand sprinkled the green bits into the boiling liquid. He took the long handled paddle and began to stir the thick potion with smooth circular strokes.
When that was done, he took a moment to admire his work. The potion was the perfect color, sky blue. This was real potion making. Not the simple anti-fever drafts, wart removers or the rest of the brews he attempt to teach those ham-handed dunderheads in class. This was true artistry.
Even if he was making it for Lupin that did not matter now. At least it was a challenge, something that actually utilized his skills for a change.
And it would help to take his mind off of other things, like the sight of hundreds of Flabber worms writhing in desk drawers.
When the brew began to darken to a deeper darker blue, he lifted the bottle of white elm moss with a flourish and carefully pulled the cork. To his shock, upon making contact with the air, the milky substance bubbled over the side of the bottle like boiling stew and covered his left hand.
Severus cried out in pain and dropped the jar as the thick mass of white burned his skin. Resisting the urge to use his other hand to wipe it off he quickly rushed to one of the sinks and snatched up the vial of cleanser.
This had to be bubotuber pus, that the smell was unmistakable. He did not use the sink because the milky liquid reacted badly to water. The last thing he needed was to make it worse! He took the vial of cleanser in his right hand and used his teeth to open it. It was clumsy work and tears were forming in his eyes from the pain, but he kept calm and finally removed the cork.
To his horror, more bubotuber pus poured out of the vial. The thick white liquid flowed with frightening speed to cover his right hand. He dropped the vial and stepped away from the sink. Severus looked to his antidotes and healing salves to find the only one that would help to neutralize the pain from the caustic puss, but the blue jar that had been in that spot yesterday was glaringly absent now.
The bubotuber puss burned like fire! Snape held his hands against his chest as blood began to seep from the raw skin of his knuckles when his fingers flexed convulsively. This was not just bubotuber puss. Something had been added to it, that cause it to expand in the air and burn even worse then it normally would.
He was in agony, but his keen mind came up with only one thing, black toad venom. It made the bubotuber pus act more like an acid.
And to make matters worse, with the addition of the puss that had fallen into Lupin's Wolfbane potion the brew was now a black, smoking and nothing more then a useless mess. Ironically, it was probably the bloody Gryffindors that had done it.
The pain was excruciating, perhaps that is what caused his mind to become muddled with so many confused thoughts. Mainly he wanted to know why this was happening? Admittedly he had been a bastard in Potions class before Voldemort's defeat. But since then, he had been very patient and according to everyone including Minerva, quite civil. Even with the pranks he had been trying hard not to lose his temper. If he exploded, the tricks intensified, if he was restrained there would be gaps between them. Since no one seemed to be interested in finding the culprit and stopping him, Severus had hoped that maybe if he did not entertain his tormentor by ranting and generally making a scene the perpetrator would eventually lose interest.
Obviously that brilliant strategy was a dismal failure.
He would have to tell Lupin that there would be no Wolf's bane potion for him this time. Even if the Potions Master were physically able to brew more, he would have no time to try again today. Besides Some of the ingredients were costly, and hard to come by. Dumbledore would foot the bill, but Severus would have to make a trip to Knockturn Alley to find many of them.
He decided to use the floo to reach the infirmary, not only to ease the pain in his hands sooner, but so that he would not have to interact with anyone along the way. Severus did not need the aggravation, nor did he trust his temper.
Unfortunately, he had to endure more pain just to get to the infirmary, since he had no choice but to use his injured hand to pick up the powder and throw it. At least the nasty substance did not interfere with the floo powder!
"Severus!" gasped Madam Pomfrey as he tumbled out of the fireplace in the infirmary. To add insult, as well as another injury to the day, he tripped as he stepped out of the floo. Pure agony shot through his hands as they hit the floor splitting the already damaged skin. The mediwitch carefully helped him to stand. "Bubotuber Pus?" She recognized the results of the corrosive element on sight having seen more then her share of its effects on inattentive Herbology students. "How did you get such severe exposure?" He should never have let it get so bad; he was a Potions Master and used to working with volatile substances.
"It was another sick prank," he growled as Pomfrey found a vial of cleanser and began to work on his hands.
"But who would do something like this?"
"I do not know. Someone put bubotuber puss mixed with toad venom in a vial of white elm moss. But that was not enough for them, they also put it in the cleanser bottle and took my anti-toxin," he hissed as Pomfrey applied the painkilling potion to his bleeding hands.
"Oh, Severus your poor hands," Albus Dumbledore gasped from the doorway. The portrait of an alchemist in Snape's lab had witnessed the prank and immediately rushed to alert the Headmaster.
Dumbledore almost cringed when he saw the harm caused by the pus. He had always admired Severus' long elegant hands. To see deliberate injury to such works of art seemed obscene. At least he knew that Pomfrey would be able to heal them.
"My hands can be fixed easily enough. Lupin's potion is another matter. He will have to be locked up for the change tonight,"said Severus disgustedly.
"What about my potion?" Remus Lupin asked as he walked in behind Dumbledore.
Remus Lupin gaped as he saw the damage to Severus' hands. "Merlin! Are you all right Severus?"
"I will heal, but your potion is ruined."
"I can live without it for a night," the Gryffindor said stoically. "It is you that I am worried about."
"It will take several days for them to completely heal, but fortunately Severus' hands will not be permanently damaged," reported Pomfrey.
"Thank Merlin," Remus sighed as he watched with fascination as the nurse wrapped treated bandages around the red raw fingers.
"Severus, do you have any idea who is responsible for this?" asked Dumbledore with concern.
"No," admitted Severus bitterly as he tried not to look at his ravaged hands. "I have no idea why any of this is happening. But I presume that it is the same person who has been making my life miserable and trying to humiliate me for the past several weeks."
"It makes no sense," Remus added sadly. "All I have been hearing in the halls from the students is how happy they have been with you Severus. Now that Voldemort is gone you are fair with praise as well as punishment. Some of them have even admitted that your classes are fun. They have been worried about you since the pranks started."
"Forgive me for not taking this seriously before, Severus," Dumbledore's gaze dropped, unable to look the other man in the eye, "I believed that it was just some of the students blowing off steam after the battle. I never thought that you would truly be harmed."
"So you just let him be hurt!" Remus turned angrily towards Dumbledore, who could only look down in shame. "Why must you always look the other way when someone abuses Severus?"
"Remus, that is ridiculous," Pomfrey put her hands on her hips and glared at the werewolf angrily. "Albus has been trying to find and punish the culprit. He would never deliberately allow anyone to come to harm!"
"No Poppy, Remus is correct," Dumbledore said softly. "I have often turned a blind eye to things that caused Severus pain." His mind filled with all of the pranks played on Severus over the years, the fights in school that he had not stopped, Voldemort's tortures, all the things that he had allowed to happen. Dumbledore shuddered. "I hope that you can forgive me some day Severus."
"Please Albus, I cannot think right now." Severus stood, but had to grab the bed for support, but winced as a dull pain shot through his potion numbed hands.
"We can discuss that later," Remus said as he helped the somewhat unsteady Severus to stand with an arm around his waist. Severus looked almost horrified at first, but was quickly forced to lean against the werewolf for support. Between the shock of the damage to his hands, and the powerful numbing potion, Snape was a little dizzy. "Albus, will cancel the rest of your classes today. Let me take you through the floo to your rooms to be sure that nothing else happens."
Neither Dumbledore nor Pomfrey could think of an argument to keep Severus in the infirmary so they said nothing as Lupin called out, "Snape's chambers," and they disappeared into the flame. Albus was somewhat puzzled at Lupin's uncharacteristic anger. "Perhaps it is the nearness of the full moon," Dumbledore speculated.
"Perhaps Remus has finally grown a backbone," injected Pomfrey with a smile. "And about time too. He has been attracted to Severus since they were students."
"Really?" The Headmaster raised an eyebrow, "I was not aware of anything between the two of them."
"There is not anything, yet. Remus has always been so shy and unwilling to take a chance. That and he would never stand up to those bullies he called friends," she smiled at the thought of the usually almost timid man's new attitude. "I think that they will make a nice couple."
"Poppy, let us not get ahead of ourselves. Remus may have become more assertive, but Severus is still Severus."
----
Remus Lupin still had his arm around Severus Snape's thin waist as they appeared in the Potion Master's sitting room. "I can make it on my own from here," said Severus with a slightly nervous glance at his companion.
"You cannot use your hands," Remus reminded him.
"This would hardly be the first time I have slept in my clothes," Severus informed him. "My hands will be healed enough to function adequately by morning."
"You really should eat something before you sleep," the Gryffindor ventured.
"Lupin, I am not helpless, I have been able to care for myself since I was four," Severus growled in anger, but instantly regretted his words as he noted the shocked look on the other man's face. The last thing he wanted to do was discuss his miserable childhood with the werewolf, even if he were not exhausted and in pain. He straightened with an effort, unable to accept the sympathy he saw in the amber eyes, so he pulled his emotionless mask into place. "I thank you for your concern," he said stiffly. "Now, there is the door. If you will excuse me?"
"Of course, Severus," Remus shrugged releasing his hold on Snape. He watched for a moment to be sure that he remained standing, then he sighed. His voice was steady, but there was a little sadness in his eyes. "I will see you at breakfast in the morning." He turned slowly and opened the door. With one last glance at Severus, he closed it behind him.
---
Remus moved silently through the corridor back toward the main hall with his head held high and his heart filled with a new purpose. He would prove himself to the Slytherin. He would find out who was playing these horrible tricks on Severus. Then perhaps the Potions Master would see him with new eyes.
Severus would see him not as just one of the Marauder's who had once tormented him, but as someone strong and capable that could take care of him.
Though his enthusiasm was slightly dimmed by the prospect of a long painful night without his potion.
---
Much later in another darkened corridor, Harry was pleading with his friend.
"Please, you must stop this. I talked to Remus, he said that Snape was badly hurt. And you ruined Remus' potion. In a few hours he will be howling in the Shrieking Shack, tearing at himself because of that prank."
"You know that I did not mean to hurt Remus," his friend whispered from the darkness. "How was I to know Snape was making the wolfsbane potion? Next time I will make sure that he is not doing anything that will inconvenience anyone else."
"Next time? No, you..." Harry closed his mouth in mid sentence. He was alone. "I should tell someone," the young Gryffindor said to himself nervously. "He is going to get us both into trouble."
