Chapter 2

I own nothing. J.K. Rowling is ruler of this domain, I just play there.

CHAPTER 2

Lucius Malfoy sat in his dank cell two days before Harry Potter’s birthday when an auror approached and informed him that he was being moved that night so that he could make himself presentable for his new master. The auror, whose family was killed in a raid led by Lucius, took great delight in informing him that he would be released, but would be unable to aide Lord Voldemort in any way and, in fact, would be servant to one of the victims of his many crimes.

Lucius, of course, knew of the law that permitted this type of release and was trying to figure out who he had harmed that not only knew of the law, which was quite ancient, but would be able to gain an audience with the Minister of Magic to invoke the law. In the end, he had no idea who he would be serving; he had harmed too many people to count in his days as a Death Eater.

He did know enough to resign himself to the conclusion that since this person obviously knew of the ancient law, they would most likely know of the charms that could be used to ensure his servitude. He was actually somewhat relieved knowing that he could no longer serve the Dark Lord. He had been left in Azkaban for over a year without Him making an attempt to free himself or the other servants that were captured. His former master, who he spent so much time and money aiding, had deserted him in his hour of need.

He knew from one of the few letters he received from Narcissa that Voldemort had given Draco a task that he knew would be next to impossible for the boy, kill Albus Dumbledore. Draco was no murderer and this was a task even the Dark Lord had not accomplished in his many years of attempting the task. While he held no actual love for his heir, he was fond of him. That Voldemort would throw not only himself, but also his heir away as though they were of no use to him made him furious. Voldemort had single handedly ruined generations worth of reputation carefully built to ensure the Malfoy family’s power base. All of his connections within the Ministry were useless to him now; he and his family had been labeled as traitors. He was just glad that Narcissa and Draco could still draw from the Malfoy vaults in Gringotts.

He knew that Harry Potter, the one who single-handedly put himself and several others Death Eaters in Azkaban, would be much stronger than his former master if he could learn to control his temper and quell his hero complex. His magical signature reeked of untapped power even greater Voldemort’s. He desperately wanted to guide that kind of power toward his own ends but knew that was nearly impossible now that he would never be free to initiate a truce with the boy.

He knew that Dumbledore had been killed in front of the Potter boy and that Severus had committed the deed when Draco was unable to utter the necessary words. His son was either already dead or hiding from the ministry of magic, for allowing Death Eaters to enter Hogwarts and kill and injure several students and teachers, and Lord Voldemort, for failing his task. If Draco were still alive, he would not be for much longer without some kind of outside intervention.

He knew that Potter now had no guidance and was likely to be so enraged that he would go to any lengths to kill Voldemort and avenge the death of his mentor. He could only hope that who ever was to take custody of him was a friend of Potter so that he could attempt to become the boy’s new mentor, or at least befriend him and ensure his own survival after the war. It would take time and cunning to gain the boy’s trust, but he was sure that he could, after all he wasn’t a Syltherin for nothing.

Potter was the only one powerful enough to protect him from being punished for Draco’s failure when the Dark Lord learned of his release (he had no delusions that He would not find out) and tried to come for him. The Dark Lord had left him to rot and given his heir a death sentence. All he wanted right now was to avenge himself, his heir, and his family name. He needed Harry Potter to accomplish such a thing.
