Ron was just getting ready to turn to Hermione when another owl flew in and deposited another red envelope in front of him. Giving Hermione a murderous glare, he opened that one. And, to his horror, found it was from his mother.
“RONALD WEASLEY. HOW DARE YOU SLEEP WITH THAT, THAT SCARLET WOMAN. NO TELLING WHAT KIND OF DISEASES AND WHATNOT THAT BROWN GIRL CARRIES. AFTER ALL THE TALK I’VE HEARD HERE AT THE HOUSE FROM YOU AND THE TWINS ABOUT THE WAY SHE THROWS HERSELF AT EVERYONE! I WOULD HAVE THOUHT YOU HAD MORE SENSE THAN THAT. APPARENTLY, I WAS WRONG. YOU BETTER GO SEE MADAM POMPFREY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND GET CHECKED OUT. IF ANYONE OR ANYTHING IS GOING TO KILL YOU, IT’S GOING TO BE ME. NOT SOMETHING YOU CAUGHT FROM SOME WHORE OF A GIRL.”
Continuing in a much softer voice, though still heard around the hall, Mrs. Weasley said, “Hermione, dear. I pray you won’t think any different of our family. No matter what that git son of mine has done. And you hex him a good one for me.”
The red envelope burst into flames.
Ron turned to Hermione, face as red as his hair from his anger.
“You little bitch. You told my mother?”
The Gryffindor table gasped as Ron called her that. Personally, they felt he deserved everything he had gotten.
“How could you tell her? It’s none of her business. And it’s all your fault to begin with. If you wouldn’t always have your nose stuck in a book studying, maybe you could have prevented it happening. All you had to do was spend some time with me.”
Hermione’s gasp was loud in the silence. She whipped out her wand and pointed it at him.
“How dare you say that. I do spend time with you. But you know my studies are important to me also. Though they were never important to you. None of my feelings were every important to you. All you care about is Quidditch and trying to get inside my robes.
“You are a despicable disgrace, Ron. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go before I really do hex you for your mother.”
She jumped out of her seat, turned to go but was stopped abruptly by a hard, bruising grip on her arm. She turned, staring down at the hand holding her. She followed the line of that arm to see Ron, starring down at her, furry written on his face. When she started to speak, he tightened his grip.
“Ron, let go of me.” She said calmly and quietly.
“No, we are going to go somewhere and have ourselves a nice little talk.”
“No, we aren’t. You’re going to let go of me. You’re going to stay away from me. I never want to talk to you again, unless, for some reason, I absolutely have to. Which I doubt will be any time soon. Seeing as I hate you with all of my heart.”
“You have no heart.” He retorted. Then he started dragging her across the hall and towards the doors.
“Mr. Weasley! Unhand her right now.” A deep voice said.
They both turned to see Viktor Krum behind them, along with Profs. McGonagall and Dumbledore. Ron released her slowly. As if he had to force his fingers to let go of his captive.
“Mr. Weasley, Miss Granger.” Dumbledore said. “Please follow me to my office. Now!”
He tone brooked no argument. It was apparent that he wasn’t too thrilled with either of them. Hermione had a feeling she was about to be in some serious trouble. Ron followed Dumbledore while she waited for McGonagall and Krum to go first. She didn’t want to be any where near Ron. Krum gave her a small smile, and appreciative gleam in his eyes as he allowed her trail behind.
Upon entering the office, Albus sat down at his desk and motioned for her and Ron to take their seats in the chairs before him. They sat down, each looking nervous, though Ron’s face was still full of his anger.
“Now. Please tell me, what am I to do with the two of you? I all ready know the basic facts of what happened, as does the whole school, from those howlers. And I must say, I am very disappointed in both of you.”
Hermione hung her head in shame. She knew she had lost her temper.
“I’m sorry, sir. I know I lost my temper. I should have thought before I reacted. But I was just so bloody furious.”
“You were furious?” Ron interrupted. “How do you think I feel?” He turned his head to the headmaster. “You could have done something about that! Letting those howlers go on and on.”
“Mr. Weasley!” McGonagall admonished. “You do not take that tone with the headmaster of this school.”
Albus wave his had for silence. When the old witch had calmed down, he stated, “Mr. Weasley, as I’m sure you know, there’s nothing I can do about a howler. If you try to destroy one, they just blow up in your face and screech even louder. Besides, If there was a way to destroy them, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of your mothers anger.
“Apart from taking 30 points from Gryffindor, each, for the display you both put on in the Great Hall; Miss Granger will receive a weeks worth of detention for the use of some very dangerous and dark spells. Which she will be taking off before we leave this room. Do I make myself clear, Miss Granger?”
“Yes,” she whispered. Thankful she wasn’t getting thrown out of school, or worse, sent to Azkaban or something of the like.
“Good. Your detentions will be served with Prof. Krum. As for you, Mr. Weasley, you will be serving four nights detention for the use of profane language and for attempted to drag a student off against there will. Speaking of,” he continued, “Miss Granger, will you go and see Madam Pomfrey. I can all ready see the bruises marring your skin. Mr. Weasley, I suggest you take your mothers advice and go get checked out as well.”
Ron’s face flushed this time from embarrassment.
“Miss Granger, if you would be so kind as to undue whatever it is that you did to Mr. Weasley and Miss Brown, you two can head to the hospital wing before going to serve your detentions. By the way, Mr. Weasley, yours will be held Prof. Snape.”
Ron gave sputtered in indignation at this. Why did he get Snape? He, according to him, didn’t do anything wrong. After receiving a sharp look from his head of house, he quieted down and waited for Hermione to life the curse she had put on him.
Once that was done, the headmaster spoke again. “ I expect both of you to be on your best behaviors for the rest of the school year. Do I make myself clear?” After their mumbled agreements, he gave them leave. Profs. McGonagall and Krum followed them to the hospital wing to make sure they went straight there and didn’t cause any more trouble.
Madam Pomfrey clucked her tongue when she seen the bruises on Hermione’s arm. Ron smirked at her to show he didn’t really care that he had hurt her, until he seen the dark look on Krum’s face. That wiped the look right off his face. When Pomfrey had healed the bruises, she sent Hermione on her way with Krum and then turned to Ron. Her face showing her disapproval and disappointment in the young man.
Hermione followed Krum down to his class room where she would begin the first of her detention. Once inside the class room, he had her sit at one of the desks.
“First, I’d say I was sorry to hear about what that idiot did.” Krum said. “If you ask me, he’s a right fool. And I’d also like to congratulate you the perfection of those hexes you used. Not many people can work those without them backfiring.”
Hermione looked at him in stunned disbelief.
He gave a small chuckle. “Don’t look so stunned. I mean it. Besides, he did deserve it. The only thing he didn’t even deserve is,” he dropped his voice to a low whisper, “is you.”
Hermione’s mouth dropped open. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Viktor cleared hi throat uncomfortably. Shifting nervously, he said, “For today, I think, we’ll just go over the lesson you missed in class today.”
Shifting in her seat and pulling herself back together, Hermione took the book he handed her and started going over what she missed in class. Not noticing the looks that Viktor kept throwing her way as she read.
