Chapter 3 ~ Babysitter, Exterminator and Guide
Severus stepped through the floo into Dumbledore’s office. The Headmaster was sitting behind his desk, reading a parchment. He looked up and smiled at the Potions Master.
“I hope I didn’t interrupt anything, Severus,” Albus said, his eyes twinkling.
“Nothing I can’t continue later, Headmaster,” Severus replied. He had a feeling Dumbledore knew exactly what he had interrupted, the old coot.
“How can I be of service, sir?” Severus asked as he approached the Headmaster’s desk. Albus held out the parchment, and Severus took it, scanning it quickly. It was a letter of acceptance.
“It seems there will be another occupant in the dungeon area. A Miss Odessa Divine. She will be cataloguing all our old student files in the lower part of the castle. Since the entrance to the lower levels leads off the dungeon hall, it makes sense to have Miss Divine situated nearby. Her rooms will be on the other side of yours. I am in the process of remodeling as we speak. I was hoping that you wouldn’t mind initially showing our new file cataloguer how to access the lower levels upon her arrival.” Albus said smiling.
Severus scowled. He had better things to do than spend his time babysitting some new staff member.
“Headmaster, couldn’t Minerva or one of the other female staff members do this?” Severus asked.
“The lower levels have rats, spiders and other vermin that the women refuse to deal with. I’ve already asked them. You could do a little clearing out along the way.”
Severus’ scowl got blacker. Now he was supposed to serve as an exterminator too? Already he disliked this new addition to staff. She was a pain in the ass already.
“What about Filch? He can deal with the vermin.” Severus said, his nostrils wide with anger now.
Miss Divine should be escorted by a fellow member of the staff, not a caretaker,” Albus said, his eyes losing some of their twinkle. “You are familiar with the dungeon areas, and if I remember correctly, spent quite some time down in the lower regions of the castle. I seriously doubt if there is anyone at Hogwarts who knows the area better than you, Severus. ”
Albus didn’t say, but Severus knew he was referring to the secret meetings he had attended in his youth, when Lord Voldemort was recruiting gullible students to join him. These meetings were held in the lower levels. Severus had become quite familiar with them as a result. Part of the reason the records were so askew is because they were trampled, and thrown aside by Voldemort’s newest recruits. His past was coming back to torment him once again. Severus sighed.
“Very well, Headmaster. I will show Miss Divine the lower levels. I hope the woman is a quick study. I don’t intend to do it more than once,” he said, irritated.
“I’m sure she’ll catch on quickly, Severus. I appreciate your help on this. She will be here day after tomorrow. Since you and Lady Snape will be her closest neighbors, I hope you will help her find her way around the castle until she becomes familiar with it, and make her feel welcome,” Albus said with a smile, the twinkle back in his eyes.
Welcome? She was already as unwelcome as she could possibly be. Babysitter, exterminator, guide. She had already added three hats to an already difficult job. Maybe he could pass her off on Hermione for the other stuff. He bowed to the Headmaster.
“I’ll do my best,” he said non-commitally, handing the parchment back to Albus, and heading for the floo.
“That’s all I ask,” said Albus, “Good night, Severus.”
“Goodnight, Headmaster,” replied the Potions Master, stepping through the floo with a scowl.

Hermione was sitting in the study, leafing through one of Severus’ Potions Today magazines, when her husband stepped through the floo. He didn’t look happy. Hermione rose from the chair, concern on her face.
“What’s wrong, Severus? Bad news from the Headmaster?” she asked as she stood on tiptoe to kiss his cheek.
“Yesss,” he hissed. Hermione stepped back…the only times Severus hissed was either in pleasure, and she was usually involved in that, or when he was completely pissed off. She could safely assume it was the latter. She waited to hear what the bad news was.
“We are getting a new neighbor. A Miss Odessa Divine. She will be straightening up the files in the lower levels, and I am to escort her to the lower levels, show her around and kill whatever vermin that decide to put in an appearance,” he said angrily, walking over to the liquor cabinet and pouring himself a stiff shot of firewhiskey.
“Can’t Filch do that?” Hermione asked.
“According to the Headmaster, no. It must be me, since I know the lower levels better than anyone else at Hogwarts,” he snarled. “He just won’t let me forget.”
Severus threw himself into the armchair, brooding. He was in a foul, foul mood. Whatever he had planned for Hermione tonight had come to a screeching halt. Now he was remembering his early dark days, when he was first inducted into the ranks of the deatheaters. He didn’t reminisce often about those evil times, but when he did, there was no talking to him. He was about to rise to return to the liquor cabinet, when Hermione stopped him.
“Severus, let me,” she said. She walked over to the liquor cabinet, removed the bottle of firewhiskey and brought it over to him, setting it down on the table next to him along with a glass. His eyes flicked up to her for a moment before returning to the fireplace.
“Thank you,” he said shortly, uncapping the bottle and pouring himself a rather large drink. He looked at Hermione.
“Listen, you go to bed. I’ll be along in a while,” he said, more of a command than a request. Hermione walked over to him, and kissed him on his cheek.
“All right, Severus. Good night,” she said, knowing that he was about to tie one on. She retired to their bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed, now brooding herself. She hated to see him like this. It didn’t happen often, but there were some things about her husband, she had to accept. He was loving and kind to her, but his past still haunted him from time to time, and though he talked to her sometimes about it, there were other times he could only find solace in drowning his thoughts with drink. She wanted to break him out of that tonight…she couldn’t stand when he tormented himself. She thought about it a while…how could she get his mind off of his past?
Hmm. A slow smile came to her face.
He was in “I was a deatheater” mode. She had an idea what he would like, even though it could be a bit rough for her if she couldn’t eventually bring him around. She decided to wait half an hour, when he’d be sure to have a good buzz, but not be completely blasted. Then, she’d put on the show. Hopefully, Severus would respond.

A/N: Man, Albus put it to him, didn’t he. Odessa in the dungeons, Severus having to show her around. Now he’s having a little pity party and Hermione’s got to pull him out of it…I think lemons are ahead. Please review.
