Chapter 3 ~ Snape’s Prescription is Made Known
As Tonks and Kingsley sat at the kitchen table, they heard the front door to Grimmauld Place open and close. They heard male voices engaged in conversation. Tonks stiffened as the sound of two men talking came closer. The kitchen door swung open and Jeremy Stiles and Joseph DuPre entered, both members of the Order. They were animatedly discussing a recent Quidditch match. Jeremy saw Tonks and Kingsley first, and smiled as he approached.
“Hey Kingsley, hey Tonks, good to see…”
He went to place his hand on Tonks shoulder and she hit him with a powerful uppercut, lifting the surprised wizard up and knocking him back. He stumbled to the floor and Tonks jumped up to follow through, her stool falling over. Joseph dove for Tonks as she went for Jeremy, and she kicked him in the face. He fell and she was about to crush his windpipe with her foot when Kingsley tackled her. She had reacted so quickly, the black wizard was stunned for a moment. Then he acted swiftly.
“No! Tonks! No!” he cried as he took her down to the floor. She struggled, screaming, “Get off me! Get off me!”
Kingsley wrestled with her, pinning her arms to her sides, shifting his head to avoid her head butts.
“It’s me, Tonks…it’s Kingsley! Tonks! Please. It’s me!“ Kingsley cried.
By now both Jeremy and Joseph were off the floor, Jeremy rubbing his sore chin and Joseph holding a bloodied nose. They watched Kingsley struggle with the distraught witch.
“Kingsley, she’s damaged goods,” Jeremy said, frowning down at Tonks as she slowed her struggling, her crazed eyes calming as Kingsley held her tight against him. She looked up at him.
“Kingsley? Kingsley!” she cried, burying her face in his broad chest and sobbing.
Joseph, still holding his nose to slow the bleeding said, “Kingsley, she’s dangerous. We’re going to have to decommission her. If she’s going to attack Order members, she’s got to go. I’m going to talk to Dumbledore about this.”
Both men exited the kitchen, walking toward the back of the house, no doubt heading to the stores for some healing potion.
Kingsley had managed to work himself into a sitting position and held the sobbing Tonks awkwardly, his arms wrapped around her arms and waist, aware of her soft body shuddering against him as she cried. He brought his large hand to her hair and began to stroke it gently.
“It’s going to be all right, Tonks,” he said, resisting the urge to hold her tighter.
“No it’s not, Kingsley,” she sobbed against him, “if I can’t beat this thing, I’m not going to have a job. My leave of absence from the Ministry is almost up. I can’t go back if I’m going to be attacking every man that comes near me.”
Kingsley took a deep breath.
“Tonks, there is a way to stop it,” he said softly, his deep voice quavering just a bit.
She pulled back enough to look into his eyes, hopeful.
“There is Kingsley?” she asked.
“Yes. Severus told me how you can be brought back. Be normal again,” he said slowly.
Tonks sat up straight, excited. “What is it? A potion. A spell?”
He shook his head, “No, nothing like that.”
Kingsley had a knot in his stomach as big as Hogwarts.
“What then? Tell me Kingsley!” Tonks demanded, looking at him frowning.
Kingsley took another deep breath.
“He told me that there was only one way for a woman to recover from a deatheater rape. That she has to have a pleasant sexual experience to nullify the horror of the rape,” he said in one rushed sentence.
She stared at him for a long while. Then she said, “Kingsley, how am I supposed to do that when I can’t stand for a man to come near me, much less touch me?”
Kingsley looked at her.
“There’s one man that can touch you,” he said gently, “Me.”
Tonks looked at him, biting her lower lip.
“But Kingsley, you’re my teacher,” she whispered, “we can’t…”
“I know I’m your teacher, Tonks. But I am a man as well. If you continue on like this, you are going to be sent to St. Mungo’s to live out your days in the asylum.”
He sighed.
“I would hate to see that happen to you,” he said softly.
Tonks was suddenly aware she was in his arms, and rose quickly. Kingsley also rose, towering over her. For the first time she realized what a big man he was as he gazed down at her, his dark face troubled. She turned away from Kingsley, picked up the stool and carried it back to the table. She sat down on it, her shoulders slumped.
“What a fucking mess,” she breathed.
Kingsley sat down beside her and rested his chin on his hand as he studied her.
“Yes, it is a mess. When Severus first told me what was needed, I told him I couldn’t do it,” he said. Tonks looked at him, hurt starting to form in her eyes.
“No…no. Tonks, it isn’t that I don’t find you…attractive. It is just I never thought of you that way. You are my pupil. An Auror for the Ministry, and a soldier for the Order. I’ve never thought of you as a woman…until yesterday.
He amended that statement
“and when I rescued you from the deatheaters. Even then, I thought of you as my student who was brutally attacked. I saw it from the violent side, like a beating. Only now, when I saw your reaction to Joseph and Jeremy do I realize how deep that hurt must go into your psyche. You are a woman, and you were violated that way because you are a woman. If we didn’t have the trust of teacher/student, you wouldn’t be sitting here now. It’ s like…
He looked at her gently.
“…like you never realized I am a man.”
Tonks looked at him. She was twisting her hands nervously on the table, lacing and unlacing her fingers.
“Well, I’ve never seen you with anyone, Kingsley. All you do is work out and train Aurors. So I guess you are right. I’ve only seen you as my teacher,” she admitted looking at him soberly.
“This isn’t easy for me, Tonks,\" he said honestly, \"But you are valuable to the Order. We need you. To lose you would be devastating to the Cause. I’ve been wrestling with this in my mind since Snape told me what I needed to do to you. I was going to try to seduce you, but when I saw your violent reaction today, I realize you don’t have the luxury of time. That\'s why I told you.”
Tonks mouth dropped open.
“You were going to seduce me? How?” she asked curiously.
He sighed. “I hadn’t quite worked that out yet. I suppose I would have had to do it while we trained full contact,” He shook his head.
“I’m in way over my head here,” he said, rubbing his eyes.
“And Snape said that’s the only way I can be normal again? To have sex?” she asked Kingsley, looking at him with a strange expression.
“Yes,” Kingsley said, “Good sex. Remember Snape serves the Dark Lord as he spies for us. He knows about these things. The deatheaters performed a spell on themselves to cause you such pain. Snape said that women who suffered from it can’t function in normal society if they aren’t …well…reprogrammed.”
“So that’s what he called it, eh? Reprogramming. Merlin’s balls!” Tonks said, rising from her seat. “You’re telling me to recover from one fucking I have to go through another one. Shit!”
She looked at the man who was her teacher for the past three years. He looked distinctly uncomfortable. Tonks sighed. It wasn’t Kingsley\'s fault. He was trying to offer her a solution, a way back to sanity. It wasn\'t his fault there was only one way for it to happen. Her voice grew softer.
“Kingsley, I need to go think this through. You…” she cut herself off.
“I want to help you, Tonks,” he said, looking at her intensely with his deep brown eyes, “and this is the only way I can do it. I\'m sorry.”
He noticed her eyes sweeping over him, pausing on his great arms and chest, then dropping to his pants as if trying to see what was hidden beneath them, her face doubtful.
“It\'s been a long time for me, Tonks. But I’d be as gentle as I can,” he said softly to reassure her, \"I wouldn\'t hurt you.\"
Tonks considered him. He really was a massive man, the kind of man that in better days she would have loved to have crawled all over. But now? He was her teacher for gods\' sake.
Tonks turned and headed for the stairs. She was halfway up them when she turned and said, “Kingsley, I’ll let you know, ok?”
He nodded. “All right, Tonks,” he said, “but like I said, you don’t have the luxury of time. A repeat of what happened here today would be a sure ticket out. I will talk to Dumbledore if necessary, but you have to decide soon. I would rather have it sorted out before it comes to that.”
Kingsley wore a grim expression as he said this. He felt terrible at having to pressure her, given the part he would have to play but he had to let her know how important it was she get better soon, preferably before Albus was forced to step in.
The Auror walked up the stairs and disappeared down the hallway, heading for her bedroom, and no doubt a good cry.
Kingsley sighed and let his forehead fall to the tabletop.
“Dear gods,’ he groaned.
