Awake Comes The New Tonks
Harry visited me regularly for the next two weeks. We spent a lot of time together talking about school and the titles we wanted for potential jobs after we graduated from Hogwarts.
Harry was very keen on becoming an Auror, but I knew that I could never do it after what I had seen Tonks go through. A few years ago I had reveled in the idea of helping people for a living but there were more subtle ways to do so.
I attempted to convince Harry to become something else like a healer or nurse, but he seemed determined to go headfirst into magical law enforcement. I just didn’t want to see anyone else that I cared deeply about in Tonks’ condition, which hadn’t changed at all in the last fourteen days.
Two days later, Tonks awakened. I was sleeping beside her bed when a soft noise woke me up. I’m not normally a deep sleeper, but there have been a few times in my life where I am knocked out enough so that a loud noise does not disturb me, but at the moment I was half-in and half-out of somewhere between reality and imagination.
The noise sounded like a gasp. I heard a voice shouting at me to open my eyes inside of my head, so I did. What I saw, shocked me and broke my heart.
Tonks was out of her bed in nothing but a worn hospital gown, curled into a ball in an empty corner of the room. I rubbed my eyes and glanced around, sure that I was dreaming. But after I pinched myself and it really hurt, I decided that this was really happening.
“Tonks?” I asked, standing up and slowly moving around the bed to get to her. “Tonks? Can you hear me?”
Tonks’ arms were covering her face and she seemed to be curled into a fetal position. I could tell she was cold because her body was quaking, but at that moment it could have meant she was in shock from being in a coma for so long.
I kneeled down in front of her, not daring to touch her. “Tonks, please. Say something.”
After a few minutes of gut wrenching silence where all I could hear was the faint whimpering noises coming out of my lover’s mouth, Tonks finally spoke.
“W-who are you? W-where a-am I?” she asked, speaking through her arms and refusing to look me in the eyes.
It was if I had been hit with the worst of curses. My insides felt as if someone was crawling around inside of my stomach and tearing into my intestines.
“Don’t you remember, Tonks?” I asked, finally finding my voice.
She shook her head. “N-no. I d-don’t remember anything. W-why do you keep c-calling me T-T-Tonks?” she stuttered, lowering her arms from her head to show me her frightened face.
“Tonks is your name. Nymphadora Tonks.”
“Nymphadora Tonks?” she asked.
I nodded. “Yes. Nymphadora Tonks, but you prefer to be called by your surname, Tonks.”
“T-Tonks…” she muttered, staring at the ground. She began to say her name over and over in a zombie-like mantra that made me want to cry. The Tonks I knew and loved was gone. All that remained… was an empty shell.
Note:OK I know these chapters have been kinda short but I promise they will get longer. Thanks for all my readers who have been patient and sending me great reviews! It\'s more appreciated than you all know! Thanks again, guys and gals! Love yas!
