Brief Moments

Here's Chapter 3!

I know I've not updated much.
Lots of stuff. Busy busy!

Anyway, here it is!

*********************************************************************************************

Hermione slowly drifted towards consciousness.
She was warm and comfortable and she shifted slightly, her eyes heavy with sleep.
Scenes from the nightmare she assumed she'd been having flashed through her mind.
The odd moments of consciousness, of lucidity.
Snape dour as always, sitting in the chair next to the bed she was in.
It wasn't unusual for her nightmares to contain Snape these days, but this was different. This time he was watching over her, taking care of her.

She shuddered at the thought and swallowed hard, her throat dry and sore.
She whimpered slightly as pain bit in as the muscles moved in her throat.

Suddenly someone was there, a weight on the side of the bed, next to her, a damp cloth wiping her forehead.

She struggled to sit up as she opened her eyes, but the pain in her throat and neck and chest forced her back to the pillows, her breathing shallow for
a while, her eyes tightly shut against the pain.

"Don't move," a whisper came from above her.

She forced her eyes open, and tried to scream when she saw Snape leaning over her, wiping the sweat from her forehead.

Her throat burned with the effort of her attempted scream and she soon stopped, a whimper the only noise she could produce.
She pushed at him, trying to force him away, but he was stronger than she was.

He sneered down at her.
"Welcome back, Miss Granger."

Hermione pushed at him again and he stood up, his face instantly a hard mask.
"You could at least be grateful," he sneered, "I did save your life."

"You bastard," uttered Hermione, her voice no more than a whisper, her throat dry and burning. "I'd have rather died than have YOU save me."

Snape shrugged. "Well if that's what you want."
He turned suddenly and walked out of her visual range. She heard a door open and then close again.
Had he left? She tried to move to look for him, but the pain caused her to slump back against the pillow.
The room spun around her and she passed out.

Hermione woke again.
She had no idea of how much time had passed since she saw Snape.
Aware of the pain from the last time she was awake, she moved carefully, rolling her head slightly to gain an idea of the extent of damage to her neck.

He vision grew hazy and she realised she was seriously dehydrated. She had to drink something, water, and soon, but she didn't think she could get out of the bed.

She tried to call for help, but no sound came out, she moved her arms but couldn't reach anything.
Hermione started to sob, no tears falling from her eyes, as she realised she would die her in this bed in horrible pain. That bastard had saved her for this?

Suddenly his face game into view, a smug sneer played across his lips.
"Admit it Miss Granger, you need me."

Hermione didn't have the strength to struggle as he sat beside her and gently raised her head.
"Shhh," he whispered softly, "Drink."
He held a glass to her lips and gently poured some of the contents into her mouth.
At first she couldn't tell what it was, only that her mouth suddenly felt cool, and then she choked as her throat muscles couldn't swallow.
He tapped her back gently but firmly and waited til she was breathing clearly before pouring more liquid into her mouth.
This time she knew it was water, and she gulped quickly and it until he pushed her back gently.

"Slowly," he ordered, and she nodded, desperate for more.

He continued to help her drink until she suddenly felt bloated and very tired, her stomach groaning at the added weight.
She wondered how long it had been since she had eaten.

"Rest now, I'll get you something to build up your strength soon, and," he grinned suddenly, "to stop your stomach from grumbling, it's been rather distracting."

Hermione forced her eyes to remain open enough, long enough to see the grin, the last thought in her mind before she fell asleep was wondering about why he was being so nice.
