CHAPTER THREE
It was 7:15 a.m. when Hermione sat straight up in her bed. She’d had less then five hours of sleep, yet she didn’t feel groggy or tired at all. Today was Thursday, and the seventh years were free to do as they pleased for the day, as they had already taken their NEWT’s. Today the younger students would be taking the last of their final exams. The Leaving Feast would be on Friday at two o’clock, so that everyone would have time for a final visit with their friends and still be able to pack and be ready for the train ride home Saturday morning.
Hermione would have thought last night had been a dream, except for the bathing suit top she could see hanging in the bathroom. She couldn’t wait to see what Harry and Ron would say about it.
At dinner last night, the boys had told her the seventh years were going to have one last Quidditch match. The game was supposed to start at 9:30, so that meant Harry and Ron would soon be getting ready to go to the Great Hall for breakfast.
Hermione hurried into the bathroom to get ready for the day. She came out in a pair of jeans and T-shirt. It was as she sat on the chair to pull on her shoes that she saw the mark for the first time. On her left ankle was what appeared to be a sleeping Mermaid. Hermione was unable to get a clear look at the maid’s face because of the long hair that covered it. As Hermione brushed her hand over the image, she could feel the tingle of magic that came from it. Hermione watched in awe as the Mermaid shifted in her sleep, away from her hand.
After thoroughly inspecting the mark, she decided to leave the image alone, so that she could show it to the boys. After tying her shoes, Hermione stood up, grabbed her wand off the nightstand, and headed off to the Great Hall.
As she entered the hall, she saw Ron and Harry already at the table eating. Hermione noted that just a few of the teachers and Dumbledore were at the High Table. She gave a small wave to Madam Pomfrey as she sat down across from the boys.
“Morning, ‘Mione,” said Harry and Ron. Ron’s greeting was a little harder to understand, as he still hadn’t gotten over the bad habit of speaking when his mouth was full. She nodded to both of them and began to fill her plate.
Hermione, Ron, and Harry made small talk while they ate. It was during that time that Madam Pomfrey arrived at the table.
“Hermione, I’d like for you to come to my office around 9:30 this morning so that we can discuss your summer schedule,” the school nurse said. “I’ve invited Professor Snape to join us, as part of your apprenticeship will need to be with him.” As Hermione nodded her acceptance, Madam Pomfrey, turned and made her way out of the doors of the Great Hall.
“What a great way to start off your apprenticeship,” said Harry.
“I feel sorry that you’re going to have to spend time with the greasy bat of the dungeon,” added Ron.
“For heaven’s sake, guys, I knew that this was part of the apprenticeship before I signed up. Even though I know a great deal about potions, I still have to prove that I am capable of brewing them before they can be dispensed in the hospital wing,” replied Hermione. “Now, if you guys are through, I need to show you something. Let’s go to the Gryffindor common room.” With that all three got up to leave the room.
As they passed through the door, Hermione had the misfortune to bump into Professor Snape. As he steadied her, he sneered, “Miss Granger, you would do well to remember to watch where you are going. If you had been carrying supplies, a good portion of them would have been ruined.” And with those parting words he strode towards the High Table.
Hermione just shook her head at him. After the war had ended, she thought that he would change - and in a way he did. He didn’t take nearly as many the points off the houses that he had in the past, and he was fairer in class. What hadn’t changed was his tone and impatience. She supposed that maybe in time that would change too, but she wasn’t going to bet on it.
Because there were several students hanging around in the common room, the trio decided to find an empty classroom to talk in. The boys headed up to the boys’ dorm to grab their gear so that they could head out to the Quidditch pitch after their discussion.
While the boys were upstairs getting their stuff together, Hermione sat down on a vacant chair and pulled up the left leg of her jeans. When she looked down at her ankle, she noticed that the Mermaid was no longer there. ‘Where in the hell did it go?’ she wondered. She then looked at her other leg, just to make sure that she hadn’t been mistaken where it was located. Deciding she must have imagined it, Hermione decided to just tell the boys about her odd adventure.
After the boys came downstairs, the three of them found an unused classroom where they could sit and talk privately. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
Harry and Ron were now watching her. She had the strangest expression on her face, and they were hard pressed not to laugh at her.
“Err, Hermione, is everything okay?” asked Harry.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I was just going to tell you about ....” Again she was rendered speechless.
“Going to tell us about what?” asked Ron.
Hermione had just figured out she wouldn’t be able to tell the guys about her adventure. With a large sigh, she said instead, “I just wanted you to know, that I’m really going to miss you too. We’ve been together for so long and been through so much that it’s going to seem strange with you not being here.” Hermione’s voice had become choked up as she was speaking. With that, both boys stood, and they shared a group hug.
It was then that the clock struck nine, and the three friends made their way downstairs. Hermione headed off to her appointment with Madam Pomfrey and Professor Snape, and the boys towards the Quidditch field.
