Scheming Through the Night
No one really understands me, not even my friends. It is something I have learned to expect. People think they know me. They think I am an open book. They believe my destiny is the Dark Lord. I don’t want to upset my fans but I must say that I want to stay as far away from the Dark Lord as possible. It sounds crazy, I know, but I wish to seek vengeance well out of harms way.
You think me a coward? That is true but a soldier who flees is a soldier who lives to fight another day. I am looking at the chessboard foreseeing possible moves. I am on the defensive. Cowardly? Yes, but also smart.
That is one thing people don’t expect me to be. I have never been called an intelligent boy though no one has called me stupid either. Either way, I am smart enough to think of a plan. A good plan. A plan which will keep me safe as long as I remain at Hogwarts and perhaps longer.
Being Head Boys helps of course. I can get away with things I normally wouldn’t. For example: the pairings for Prefect Patrol. I had to befriend someone on the inside. There were two choices: Ginny Weasley or the Mudblood - Hermione Granger. Each of them had their advantages and disadvantages.
Ginny is, of course, much nicer on the eyes than Granger. She’s smart, funny, popular and I haven’t spent the last six years or so making her life a living hell. Her brother’s however, would instantly disapprove of anything between us and life for me would become difficult.
Granger too is smart and funny in an odd way. She’s definitely not as popular as Ginny and she is a tougher nut to crack. She has suffered through my insults for years. However, she is more influential over Potter and much more intelligent in my opinion. Plus, there is the extra bonus that she is Head Girl.
Either girl would help me get in Potter’s good books. They would help Potter protect me. Granger was my first choice. I knew it was going to be difficult to be paired with her but still I hoped. To no avail, however, I got stuck with my second choice.
It wasn’t all bad. I had fun during our patrols together for I found that she was falling for me. She had even gone as far as creating little fantasies for herself. Quite amusing. To my luck, Granger sensed what was going on and took Ginny’s place as my partner. It was better than expected.
There is something odd going round my head, however. I find it strange how accurate Ginny’s thoughts of me were. Somehow she imagined the part of me that no one sees, that no one believes - that is real. And when did I start calling her “Ginny?” Until recently, she was always “Weasley”…

Draco looked up from the piece of parchment he had been writing on. When had he stopped calling her Weasley? He hadn’t noticed. H slipped the parchment into his Advanced Potions textbook and made his way to his dormitory.
He sat awake in bed for some time. Ginny couldn’t be driven from his mind. “Blood traitor…” Draco murmured as he finally drifted off to sleep.

Draco was very groggy the next morning and was late for class. He was sprinting down the Charm’s corridor when he saw her. Ginny was sitting in an empty classroom at the end of the hall. *WHAM!!!* Draco fell flat on his back. Looking up, he saw that he had run into the open door leading into his classroom. Ginny was smiling.
Professor Flitwick soon came out of the classroom to investigate the source of the noise. When he saw Draco on the floor, he frowned. “Mr. Malfoy. This is no time to be taking a nap in the hallway. You’re late.”
“Yes sir,” Draco mumbled and walked into the classroom. As Professor Flitwick closed the door, Draco heard a girl’s laughter. He massaged the lump that was beginning to form on the side of his head. It was going to be a long day.
