Chapter the Third

Hermione stood alone in the deeply shadowed room, feeling comfortable with the darkness, but not her Professor. For ages, she had defended him against all odds to her frinds, but after they died, she hadn\'t felt the need to say much at all about him. With Draco\'s cryptic words hanging in the air, for the first time in years, she truly looked at the man before her, trying to see him with the eyes of a woman.

Severus was tall, over six feet, with his ever-present long, dark hair, though it was no longer greasy. She squinted a bit in the light of the stuttering torch to see his face. His large hawk\'s beak of a nose sat squarely in his face, leading up to thick dark brows shadowing the liquid obsidian depths of his eyes. She had never noticed how expressive his eyes could be. The slightest change in emotion could be hidden or revealed there, depending on his wish. Her eyes moved to his mouth, taking in the sensous curve before moving lower to the broad shoulders he had gained in adulthood, and the strong arms war had given him. His hands were the hands of a musician, long elegant fingers and wide palms, strong but not overtly masculine or feminine, just nice hands.

She looked up to his face again, realising that she had been caught in her persual of him from the questioning look in his eyes. She blushed again, a pink tinge to her pale creamy skin. She backed up a step and another and another until the darkness of the room hid her from his eyes. \"How can you help me? You don\'t even know what\'s wrong.\"

\"Then tell me.\"

Snape stood half exposed to the light, watching her eyes travel over him, just like the eyes of all the others always did. Usually skepticism was the first thing he saw, but appreiciation flared in her eyes, surprising him a bit. \'She likes the way I look or understands my abilities?\' He sneered at himself inside his own head, keeping his expressions blank. \'She had no idea what is going on.\'

He watched as she retreated into the dark, asking how on earth he of all people could help her. First, he needed to get her to admit what was wrong that she needed help with.

He heard her sigh and then waited, settling in for what was sure to be a long story of feminine plights and worries, or so he thought. He was caught off guard when she drew breath and spoke of the war and the deseaced.

\"They shouldn\'t have died. I was willing to die for them, in their place. Why didn\'t I die? I feel ashamed that I live when they don\'t, like I\'m a coward because I didn\'t go down in bloody flames. I should have died! I almost did. Why couldn\'t they have let me go? I was supposed to die damn it!\" She began to ramble, spewing out all her self-loathing and depression. In the end, she was reduced to tears and convulsions.

Severus was at her side, gently giving her his support, letting her know that she wasn\'t alone in the drakness of her own mind. He knelt beside her where she sat crumpled on the floor, and slowly took her into his arms, wrapping her in his strength, tucking her head beneath his chin.

\"It\'s all right, Hermione. Let it out. We all fell like this at some point or another. Shhh.... It\'s ok, it\'s alright.\" He uttered nonsence sounds and soothing words, slowly managing to calm her down. He rocked her back and forth in his arms, smoothing away her hair from her face.

\"I always suspected you weren\'t as mean as you let on.\" She whispered as if to herself, but he heard her whether she meant for him to or not. He smiled into the dark, glad she couldn\'t see the pleased look on his face.

\"Now I know what\'s wrong. What do you want to do about?\"

\"No, you don\'t know what\'s wrong. That\'s just what is causeing the problem. The real trouble is that I feel like I need to hurt, just so I never forget what they did for everyone. That I need to be punished because they made the ultimate sacrifice and I didn\'t.\" Severus stilled, realisation of what she needed coming to him. A slow grin crept across his face.

\"I presume that detentions would not suffice? No need to answer, I know what you mean. Draco was right, I can help you. I know what you want and need, I have helped... others that felt the same way. Do you want my help?\" They offer was made in a quiet voice, waiting to be judged.

\"Y-yes.\"
