Before the Trip

Disclaimer: The characters in this story are all JK Rowling\'s. I don\'t own a single one. I\'m borrowing them for a little debauchery, then, I\'ll give them back.

Harry leaned back into his chair and rubbed his forehead. “Fuck,” he said with a sigh.

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow and looked toward Snape. “I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that Potter,” Severus quipped.

Harry looked at the older man and growled. “When do we leave, and where do I need to be?”

Dumbledore’s eyes glittered with delight. “Meet Severus at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade in two days. You’ll be staying at a chateau in Montreux. You’ll only need to bring your wand and of course, clothing: wizard and muggle.”

Harry rolled his eyes. “Of course…” A chateau? Why must the old man torment me? He’s such a sadistic old bastard!

He rose from his chair and nodded to the two older wizards. Harry made his way home and paced. He paced from one end of his flat to the other. The only thing that was racing through his head was, Why Snape?

Finally, Harry resolved to having a shot or two of fire whiskey. The two shots of fire whiskey turned into half of the bottle. Harry managed to get himself drunk whilst packing his things. He woke the next morning hung over. With a headache, he decided that pacing around his house would do nothing to make the day go by faster.

He made up his mind to apparate to Hogsmeade and wile the day away there with people, instead of being alone. Once he got to Hogsmeade, he found himself a room at the Three Broomsticks, and made his way downstairs to find something to eat.

As he slid up to the bar, he caught Madame Rosemerta’s eye and smiled. “It’s been many years, young man,” she laughed as she touched his hand.

Harry’s eyes glittered as she spoke to him. “Rosemerta, it’s good to see you again.”

She handed him a butterbeer and turned to fix him a sandwich. Harry sat for several hours making small talk with Rosemerta and some of the other patrons. He was approached by many people including Amos Diggery, Kingsly Shackelford, and to his surprise, Minerva McGonagall.

“Harry, it’s funny to see you in these parts,” she said from behind him.

He turned and offered her a warm smile. “Professor McGonagall. It’s nice to see you. Come to town for a little decompression?”

She smiled and took the seat next to him. “No Harry, Albus sent me here to see you.”

His attitude changed dramatically. “Oh,” was all he said.

“Harry, he wanted me to come tell you that there is not a single person on the staff that isn’t ecstatic about your appointment.”

Harry raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure it’s all of the staff?”

She laughed. “Well, Severus is still stalking around the castle, but I think it’s because he doesn’t like the idea of having to spend three months with you.”

At this comment, Harry laughed. The thought of Snape stalking around the castle with no students to take points from really struck Harry’s funny bone. “He doesn’t have any potions to make, or something?”

Minerva just chuckled at his question and changed the subject. As they said their farewells and she made her way to the door, none other than Severus Snape made his way in. Harry groaned and told Rosemerta that he’d be in his room.

Snape sat for some time, simply contemplating the next three months of his life. A chateau? Albus is bound and determined to push us together. A chateau indeed!

A ruckus brought Snape out of his thoughts and he twisted around to see two young wizards begin to attack each other like muggles. He grabbed the bottle of fire whiskey he’d been drinking and slinked up the stairs to the rooms as Rosemerta broke them up.

He knocked on the first door that had light coming from under it, and to his delight (that he’d never, ever admit), Harry answered. “What now?” Harry asked as he threw up his hands in defeat. “Have you come to taunt me about our little trip?”

Snape leered at the young man. “Actually, I came to see if you’d like a drink,” he answered holding up the bottle.

Harry stepped back and let the older man in. Once he closed the door, the young man burst out laughing. “You know that I can’t resist fire whiskey.”

They moved to the couch in front of the hearth and Snape took a swig directly from the bottle. Harry followed suit. “So, how were things at Hogwarts this past year?”

Severus laughed. “Same as every year, except I really do believe the brats are getting dumber.”

Harry noticed the flush in the other man’s cheeks. He’s already drunk, Harry thought to himself.

“Ok, well, tell me this. Why must we, you and I, go to a chateau in Switzerland for me to learn what I need to get my certificates?”

Snape sat there for a long moment as he took another draught of whiskey. “That’s a good question, Harry.”

He never actually answered Harry, because he did not want to scare the young man away before they left. Instead, he passed the bottle back to him and changed the subject. As the night wore on, they spoke of trivial subjects and kept getting drunker. Before long, the men was laughing at the simplest things and exchanging snide and sarcastic comments. Harry rose from his seat and opened his trunk and rummaged around. “How about we do something?” He asked as he pulled an old battered box from inside the trunk. “Are you any good at wizard chess?”
