The Potions Master

Chapter Three: The Potions Master

Severus apparated as close as he could to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He walked the rest of the way to his dimly lit dungeon hallway just before his students started pouring in through the doors. Gryffindors. Oh joy. At least the Slytherins can give them a hard time, he thought bitterly, inwardly smiling at the idea of taking points from Harry Potter’s house.

“Your assignment is on the” he flicked his wand in the direction of the chalkboard “board. And Miss Granger, there will be no need to help Mr. Longbottom with such a simple assignment.” Hermione blushed furiously at his comment. “Go work on the other side of the room with Miss Parkinson. Mr. Potter you can work with Mr. Malfoy, Mr. Weasley – Mr. Goyle.” He continued until everyone hated their partner. “There will be little need to talk. And I saw that gesture Mr. Potter. Fifteen points from Gryffindor.”

“But Professor Snape, he didn’t do anything,” piped up Hermione.

“Ten points from Gryffindor, Miss Granger. And I think detention tomorrow at five o clock.” She looked on the verge of tears; he knew all the other teachers worshiped the ground she walked on. “Now get to work, all of you.” He sat down at his desk to over the abysmal papers turned in by his O.W.L. class the day before.

After about ten minutes of grading he was fed up. “I expect MORE out of my O.W.L. students. These papers are pathetic. I want them all redone by tonight at five o clock. Anyone failing to do so will be given two weeks detention with yours truly.” He smiled smugly at the looks of shock on his student’s faces. “Now back to work!” he roared. Seconds later he pointed his wand at the papers and they burst into flames.

He decided to walk around the room tormenting the Gryffindors. “Mr. Potter. What do you call that?”

“The Draught of Peace,” he said lamely.

“Then, why don’t you sample it Mr. Potter.”

“Oh, Harry, don’t!” Hermione whispered feverishly from across the room.

“I don’t think I want to, sir.”

“Then no marks again. Evanesco. The rest of you can bottle a flagon of your potions and leave them on my desk. Class dismissed.”

Severus continued tormenting his students for the rest of the day, taking 20 points from Gryffindor when Ginny Weasley spilled her potion all over him. When it was finally the end of the day he went to his chambers to change into something more suitable for the young lady he was to dine with. As he was pulling on his dress robes an owl flew to his dungeon door. He quickly undid the letter and sent the owl on his way.

Severus,

We need to talk before your engagement tonight. See me in my office as soon as possible.

~Dumbledore

I wonder what this is all about. How did he even know about tonight? That man doesn’t miss a trick, he thought to himself.

Severus walked up to the stone gargoyle that guarded the door to Dumbledore’s office. “Ice mice,” he said loudly and clearly. Slowly the Gargoyle spun around to reveal a spiral staircase moving upwards. He stepped on the stairs and slowly rose up to the door. Before he even knocked on the door he heard Dumbledore call him in. He walked through the door and into Dumbledore’s office. The walls were covered in little trinkets and the wise old man sat behind his desk with a twinkle in his eyes.

“You wanted to see me, Headmaster?”

“Yes. I‘m afraid we have much to talk about. I must warn you about this evening.”

“How do you even know about tonight? And what concern is it of yours what I do in my personal time?” he said coldly as he glared at the old man.

“The tricks of an old man are not to be revealed. What concerns the member of the Order concerns me, Severus. I must warn you about personal relations with anyone in the Order. I advise strongly against it.”

“Why?” he asked icily, turning to leave.

“You will leave when you are dismissed, Severus.” Upon hearing this Severus turned around hotly and glared at the old man.

“And why is it you feel the need to warn me?”

“You know the dangers you and Tonks face everyday. Sh you your partner, not meant to be your lover.”

“We haven‘t even had dinner yet, I think that we are far off from being lovers, Headmaster. Right now we are only friends with a slight interest in each other. And as I said before, it is of no concern of yours what I do in my personal life.”

“I see how you feel, but I felt the need to warn you anyway.”

“Well, now you have and I must be going.” Severus turned to leave and had his hand on the door before the old man called him back yet again.

“We also have business of the Order to discuss. I wish for Tonks to accompany you to the Death Eater meetings.”

“I don‘t think that‘s a good idea.” What is he doing? Tonks is doing enough already. She can‘t handle anymore.

“I know how you must feel. That Tonks is doing enough? Am I right?” Severus nodded, stunned that the old man really did understand how he was feeling. “But I think it would be good for you to have someone to accompany you nonetheless. It is either to be Tonks or Remus Lupin. I leave the decision up to you.”

“I think Tonks can handle it after all,” he said bitterly. “I wouldn‘t work with werewolf boy to save my life.”

“Ah, Severus, when will you get over your past? It is imperative that you and the other members of the Order get along with one another.”

“Will she have to be marked? I wouldn‘t want her to go through that. What would happen if someone at the Ministry found out?”

“Ah, I feared you would concern yourself with that. I assume you know the Concealment Charm?”

“Yes Headmaster. Is that your plan? Teach her just to cover it up? This could mean her job if it is discovered.”

“You concern yourself too much with this, Severus. Yours has never been discovered. And what occasion would someone have to be closely examining her arm close enough to see past the Concealment Charm?”

Severus just glared coldly at the old man. “Headmaster, with all due respect, I have somewhere to be. May I be dismissed now?”

“You may go, but remember to heed my warning. I don‘t want to see either of you hurt. You will also need to teach her Occlumency.”

“Oh, joy. Another Occlumency student,” he said sarcastically. “Let‘s hope she is more adept at it than Potter.” With that comment, he left the headmaster in his wake, his robes billowing behind him.
