Chapter 3
A/N: Yeah, the Sorting Hat's little poem thing really sucks so just bear with me and we'll all make it through this.
She sat in the darkness, waiting for the Sorting Hat to make its decision. Allowing herself to drift into her own little world, she again recalled the incident.
“That was very interesting indeed!” The Sorting Hat’s haunting voice echoed through the dark, emanating from who-knows-where.
Gasping in shock, she tried to clear all thoughts from her head, not wanting anyone, let alone a talking hat, to know what was on her mind.
Breaking into rhyme, the Sorting Hat announced its decision:
“I have decided
That you will be guided
By the snake that lives within.
“You will find
A new peace of mind
In good ole Slytherin.”
Light penetrated the darkness that had enveloped her, leaving her back in Dumbledore’s office. He thanked her for coming to Hogwarts and led her out of the office.
She was left standing alone in the hallways filled with students rushing to their dormitories. One of the Hufflepuffs came charging right at her, making no sign of stopping. She jumped out of the way just in time to avoid being tackled on her very first day.
When she finally managed to reach the entrance to the Slytherin common room, she realized that she had no idea how to get in. She looked around for a button, keyhole, anything that would give her access to the dormitory. As she was searching, two large figures approached where she was standing. Their chuckles filled the corridor as they crammed pumpkin pastries into their mouths one right after the other. The trail of crumbs that had spilled out of their mouths ended abruptly as they stared at this strange girl standing outside their common room.
Why couldn’t I have just paid attention to the headmaster when he told me the password? Then I wouldn’t be stuck out here with these two goons! She thought to herself, giving them a faint smile.
They circled around her cautiously, their gaping mouths filled with half chewed sweets. She awkwardly stumbled backward, giving them space. The taller of the two whispered into the other one’s ear, causing him to break into a fit of laughter. They mumbled and then proceeded to walk through the newly formed opening in the solid stone wall. Being of magical descent, she was hardly phased about the sight and quietly followed them down the long passage whose darkness was broken by strategically placed candelabras.
The caravan reached their destination: a dark, maple, dungeon-style door. The two Slytherins disappeared into a churning mass of black robes and green furniture. She eased herself into the group and began pushing her way toward the silver sign that read “Girl’s Dormitories” in curvaceous script. One girl with platinum blonde hair straight from a tube gave her a venomous glare as she walked past her toward the dorms. She returned the glare with an even more lethal gaze she had perfected as a way to silence gossipers.
She entered the last room on the left and found her trunk that held all of the supplies she would need that year. After changing into her forest green nightgown that complimented her long, auburn hair, she drew the curtains around her bed closed and pondered what the Sorting Hat meant by “the snake within.”
