Aranea

Chapter 3; Aranea (Spider’s web)

Hermione sat on her gold and red colored bed. Tears were running down her face unchecked at this point. //I’m sorry…. // she kept thinking.

//Do not be afraid… // Cerin’s voice was soothing.

//Be strong… // She said again. Hermione raised her head and shut the curtains. Light was not god for Cerin.

Cerin’s form appeared before Hermione. She raised her hand and wiped away the tears on her master’s face.

//Master?// Cerin asked

“Yes?” Hermione sniffled and looked up at Cerin’s blank face.

“Do you remember when we met?” Cerin floated next to her and sat down. At this Hermione managed a smile. She raised her head to look at Cerin’s.

“Of course I remember. I couldn’t and wouldn’t forget.” She answered.

Flash Back

Hermione walked down the road of Hogsmead. Her bags of books were becoming heavy and she had left her wand at Hogwarts.

//Stupid! How could you have forgotten?!?// She ranted at herself.
//I wonder where Ron and Harry are?// She shrugged and continued her path to the 3 Broomsticks.

On the way she saw a rose on the floor. It was still fresh, as if someone had just dropped it.

//Oh! A rose, I’m going to pick it up then.// She put her bags down and kneeled to pick up the rose.

There was something different about the rose. She looked closer.

//It’s Black!!// she had never seen a black rose before, so she picked it up. She felt a telltale pull at her navel and she was spiraling into a vortex of some sort.

//PORKTEY!! How could I have been so stupid?!?// someone could have drooped it there for her to pick up! And fell for the trap they had set up.

The swirling stopped and Hermione found herself in a forest of some sort. Only, the trees weren’t littered with leaves. Hermione took a good look and screamed.
//BONES….OH MY GOD THERE ARE BONES ON THE TREES!!!!!!!// Hermione scrambled back and tripped over something. She turned her head sideways and looked straight into the empty sockets of a skull.

“AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” Her scream pierced the air.

She attempted to stand up but something was holding her robes!! She pulled and finally shrugged her robes ff and headed straight, running as fast as her legs could carry her.

//My god, my god, my god, my god…// She kept repeating over to herself. Her legs were becoming tired, and she collapsed on the dusty ground. Breathing hard, she looked for a town, village or some sort of life, but none was found.

//Ok Mione. Don’t panic. There has got to be a way out of here.// she thought to herself and stood up again.

A way out, an exit, yeah, that was what she had to find. She continued to walk forwards and into foliage of bones.

//At least they aren’t fresh…ughh// She shivered with disgust. Making sure not to trip over and bones or rocks, Hermione carefully made her way onwards.

//YES!!!!// her mind screamed when she saw gates in front of her. They looked rusty but surely there were people living behind them…right?

There had to be people. But…what if the bones were…No can’t think like that. They have to be alive. They HAVE to!!

She approached the black gates and looked for a handle. There was none. No lock either.

“Hey!” She called out.

“Anybody there?” Her cries echoed eerily.

She was about to push the gates when she heard footsteps. A small child ran up from the other side of the gates.
//Thank god! There ARE people alive here!// she congratulated herself for finding them.

“Hello miss!” the little boy said and looked at her. There was something NOT right about the kid.

“Hello there, would you mind letting me in please?” She asked, desperately wanting to be away from the bones.

“Sorry, no one is allowed after sundown.” The kid answered.

//NO!// she quickly tried to find something to say.

“I’m sorry, I just got lost here and…” She was cut off by the boy.

“OH! You are a human!” He said and his eyes lit up.

“Yes…” This was getting creepy. She didn’t like the way the kid’s eyes lit up.

“You can come in then!” he smiled cheerfully and opened the gates for her. Hermione walked in cautiously.

“Follow me! You can come to our house!” He ran of and motioned for Hermione to follow her.

She obeyed and ran off with the boy. They stopped at a wooden house at the beginning of the village. “You can stay here with us! What’s your name?” He asked.

“My name is Hermione. What’s yours?”

“Suno. My name is Suno.” He answered and opened the door.

“MOM! I found someone! A human at the gates!” He yelled out.

Hermione was getting scared. Yeah, she WAS a human but why did they keep sticking to that fact? As she was about to say something, a woman came out of the doorway.

She eyed Hermione.

“Hello. Welcome to our village. We are happy to take you in….” She smiled and Hermione tried not to shiver,

“Thank you, I got lost and…” She started but was cut off.

“It’s quite all right! It’s been a long time and we are hungry. You are here in time for the ceremony!” She said.

“Ceremony?” Hermione looked confused. She didn’t know anything about a ceremony.

“Yeah! Where someone goes into the Castellum of bones and…” He started but his mother reprimanded him.

“Enough Suno!” She looked at Hermione, follow me, I’ll introduce you.”

Hermione gulped and followed. // Why oh why didn’t I bring my wand again? Oh yeah, I forgot it at Hogwarts. Stupid…//

She followed the little boy and the mother. //Castellum of bones? What’s that? Someone goes in and, but the kid didn’t finish…//

They walked into a glade. But, something wasn’t quite right about it. She looked around. People were gathering around the rocks at the glade.

“Welcome young human!” She heard someone call out.

Hermione shuddered...human…

“I am Corin, the leader of this village. I see you have arrived in time for the ceremony!” He smiled and walked closer.

“You seem quite adequate…” He leaned down to look at her.

“Adequate for what?” Hermione was getting frightened.

“A human can only enter the Castellum of Bones!” His smile turned wider.
“Yes,” One of the villagers hissed “It is lucky that Suno found such a tasty human today! Just in time!”

Hermione backed away. “Ok, what are you?” She asked her voice was wavering. This was not a welcoming sign.

“Humans are only made to be eaten…” Another villager spoke.

//EATEN?!?!?!// Hermione was ready to run at the slightest chance.

‘Y-you can’t eat me!!” She shouted.

“And why not?” Suno’s mother asked.

“Enough!” She heard Corin shout. “This human will enter the Castellum.” He raised his hands and the villagers shouted out.

Hermione felt someone grasp her shoulders. She struggled to be free, but the hands were too strong. She was pushed roughly into the center of the glade.

There was a rumbling sound, and the villagers started to cheer. Hermione saw…something come out of the ground. The thing became bigger and bigger until nearly the whole glade was covered.

//My god…it’s a castle made from bones…// Hermione was wide-eyed with fear.

The rumbling stopped and Hermione could see the castle clearly now. A giant skull adorned the top of the castle; the empty sockets were filled with fire.

“Enter! Enter! Enter!” The villagers were whispering. The doorway to the castle was also adorned with skulls. Their lower jaws had been ripped off and their skulls were filled with flames.

She was pushed onto the platform leading into the castle. She turned and started to run, but she was blacked by Corin. “Go in human! You won’t come out!” He hissed at her and brandished a knife.

//So, either this, or the castle…// Hermione turned and walked to the castle. Step after step. The villagers around her were hissing and leering at her.

//I don’t want to die…// was her thought at the time. The skulls around her seemed to be alive. The flames inside of them were sparking towards her.

Again one of the people pushed her, and she stumbled onto the ground. Her mouth was filled with dirt. Hermione spat it out and continued walking. Her cheeks were stained with tears.

//No….no…//

She bit her lip so hard; it bled and from the blood and villagers became even more aggressive.

Once she was behind the doorway of the castle, the bones collapsed behind her and blocked the exit. Now Hermione was trapped in the dark, alone and scared with tears running down her face.

She fell on the ground and sobbed.

“I don’t want to die…no…Harry…Ron!!” She whimpered uncontrollably.

Suddenly, one by one torches with skulls for handles lit around her. Hermione raised her head and saw a tablet in front of her.

She walked to it and picked it up. It was carved on bone. Screaming, she dropped it. But she couldn’t read it, because there was no light coming there.

//Breath Mione breath!// She gathered her nerve and picked it up. On the tablet was the inscription;

“Those who enter the Castellum are doomed,
The dead around shall rise from the living and
Gather all the remains of those who were left behind.

Find the stones and close them all
The seals will be broken once the light is complete
The torches guide the way to doom
Do not look upon the faces of the ones who live…
Beware do not move when they come
Stay still and you will come out
Not alive
Nor dead-“

Part of the tablet had been broken off. Hermione held onto it and started walking. She looked at the torches around her. Each one had a different skull.

She walked down into a narrow path. The ground under her seemed to throb and Hermione was not comforted by it.

“The dead around shall rise from the living…” What did that mean? The dead were dead, how could they rise from the living?

She frankly, did NOT want to know.

She straightened and made sure she didn’t trip over the bones…
