Devil on the Wall : Interlude

Harry knelt next to her sleeping body and untethered the leather bands that were keeping her in place. She lifted her head and smiled at him. "Hi Harry."

He smoothed her hair away from her face and kissed her forehead. "Hi Gin."

She flexed her fingers several times and watched them move. "Why did you untie me?" She had been tied to keep her from hurting anyone. The poison would take over and several times she had lashed out at Severus when he tried to get close to her.

Harry held up the bottle of potion. "I stole this from Severus' stash. He'll kill me in the morning but it'll - it'll get rid of the poison."

Ginny shook her head. "I told you, nothing will get rid of the poison."

He shushed her. "This will - this will kill you. Like you asked."

She stared at the bottle and whispered, "Oh."

"I don't have to give it to you. Only if you're sure."

She nodded and smiled sadly. "I never thought that this would be the way you saved me." She watched as he uncorked the blue glass bottle. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "How long will it take?"

He dropped the cork on the floor. "About an hour, I think."

Ginny took the bottle in her hands and nearly dropped it. "I can't. My hands are shaking."

He cradled her hand in his. "Lean against me." She did as she was told and leaned her back against his chest. Slowly, her mouth found the opening of the vial and she drank until it was empty. Harry set it aside; listened as it rolled away.

She blinked slowly. "I can feel it." Carefully, she lay down with her head in Harry's lap and began to talk. "I uso dro dream about you saving me. You would come flying in on your stupid broomstick and you would slay whatever evil demon had captured me."

"I did onc once, remember?" His voice sounded weak and hollow in the empty dungeon.

She smiled. "But in my dreams, you would make love to me afterwards."

Harry blushed. "I definitely never did that."

"No, you didn't." They were silent for several minutes before Ginny spoke again. "I would go to Percy when I had those dreams. He would pull back the duvet and let me in. I love him, too. I wished a thousand times that I could have both of you. He was gentle with me, though. nevenever pushed too hard and the way he kissed me was just...magnificent."

He gently pet her hair. "I'm sorry I couldn't be what you wanted me to be."

"I'm not. Since I was ten, I pretended that one day I would marry you." She laughed lightly. "I must've written my name as Ginny Potter a thousand times on parchment. We were going to have a layer cake with white frosting and pink roses. I would be wearing the most beautiful white dress and my dolls were going to be Brides' Maids."

He watched as her eyes crinkled up. "I'm sure it would've been a beautiful wedding."

She coughed and closed her eyes. "How long has it been?"

"Not too much longer, Gin. Only another fifteen minutes."

She nodded. "God it hurts. They'll hate you when they find out you did it."

He winced and looked away. "I know."

"Snape could've done it."

"No. This is the only thing I've ever been able to give to you. Besides, he's determined to find a cure for the poison."

She took his hand in hers and brought it to her cheek. "He's going to kill you."

He shivered at how cold her body was. "I know. I can take it, though."

She opened her eyes again. He watched as they shimmered and tears fell down her cheeks. "I love you so much. Tell Percy that, too. That I love him."

He nodded. "I promise."

"Thank you for killing me."

Harry swallowed as his own tears came. She smiled at him. "You're welcome," he whispered and kissed her lips lightly. "I'm sorry I couldn't do more."

"Shut up," she whispered back. "Or I'll tell Snape on you."

He laughed until he cried and didn't stop until her body was cold and her last breath was gone. He held her close, nuzzled her neck and whispered her name over and over again. When he finally looked at her, she was still smiling.
