Return to Hogwarts

My Mate

Chapter Three: Return to Hogwarts

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Draco Malfoy strode up the steps of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, his black cloak swirling about him like a thundercloud.
His face was grim, silver eyes flashing like flint on steel and pale blonde hair flying in the wind.
While he didn’t doubt that Dumbledore would want to help, it wasn’t that simple.
Narcissa was the wife of a very powerful man with a lot of pull in the Ministry. If she were to seek refuge in Hogwarts, it could mean trouble for Dumbledore, despite his popularity since Voldemort’s demise. The wizarding world was still in somewhat of a fragile state from the brutal war and everyone, even someone like Dumbledore had to tread carefully.
He pushed open the heavy doors and headed for the Headmaster’s office. Snape met him halfway there and simply flanked him the rest of the way.
They exchanged no words. They didn’t need to.
Both were experts at conveying information with their eyes and expressions, while keeping their emotions carefully monitored.
When they reached the portal, Snape stepped forward to recite the password.
“Licorice whips.” Draco smirked at his former Potions master.
“Ever the same.”
Severus’ lips twitched. “Indeed.”
Dumbledore was sitting behind his desk, popping lemon drops into his mouth. He looked up when the two men entered.
“Ah, Draco Malfoy.” Albus rose to his feet. “It has been a long time. Welcome back to Hogwarts.”
Draco inclined his head. “Headmaster. You look well.”
As the old man peered at Draco through his spectacles, he had the feeling, Albus saw much more than what Draco revealed. Dumbledore had always been able to do that and it irritated him.
“There’s no need to be so formal my boy. You are no longer a student.” He motioned for them to sit. “Now, what is this urgent matter you need to discuss?”
Draco looked over at Fawkes, picking at his feathers. “My mother.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Severus tense. Frowning, he continued. “She is dying.”
Concern covered Albus’ face. “From what?”
Shrugging, Draco kept his face impassive. “Probably a combination of things, but mostly I believe my father is responsible.”
Severus slammed his hand down on the wooden arm of his chair. “He is killing her and you do nothing?” He spat.
Draco jerked back at the sudden attack. It was utterly out of character for the man. Severus had been in subtle ways, a surrogate father and rarely ever spoke harshly toward him.
“There is nothing I can do.” Releasing a shaky breath, Draco raked his fingers through his hair. “He is not… It is more that her strength is waning. Lucius is not poisoning her, or beating her to death, though she is still on the receiving end of his anger. There is no one thing I can pinpoint. More that she has endured twenty-three years with that man and no longer has the capacity to continue.”
He abruptly stood and started pacing.
“She is losing weight and becoming weaker by the day. It’s as if life is slowly being drained out of her. Every day she is more fragile.”
He took a deep breath and turned to the only two men who knew him.
“To make matters worse, Lucius just informed me that I am part veela.” He glanced at them to see their reactions, but neither looked particularly surprised.
“You knew?”
Dumbledore shook his head. “I was never for certain, though I had suspected your mother had veela parents.”
Draco nodded curtly.
“This poses a problem to my father because it will mean that he will not be able to choose a suitable, profitable bride for me.” It was said with a self-depreciating sneer.
“He has instructed me to hold off as long as possible on claiming my mate, if and when I find her. It seems he has been researching possible means of neutralizing my veela blood.”
Severus spoke. “That’s not possible. If your veela genetics are dominant, there is no way to keep you from the urge, or stave off the effects.”
“He seems to think he might have found a possibility. However, it will take him a few months to confirm it, and in the meantime, there have been indications that the veela is dominant and that my mate is not far off.”
Severus had a slight frown and Dumbledore simply raised his eyebrows.
Draco continued. “I have been… having dreams. I can feel my blood stirring in my veins. If I find my mate before Lucius finds a treatment, I don’t think I will be able to hold off for long.”
“If that is the case, I am afraid of what he might do to my mother. Already, he has been more vicious and cruel since my condition arose.”
Draco leaned forward urgently. “If I don’t get my mother out of there soon, I know she will die. The only question is, how soon.”
“That being said, I haven’t been able to come up with a safe place that Lucius could not find or invade.”
“Except Hogwarts.” Dumbledore stated quietly.
Draco’s jaw bunched and ticked. “Yes.”
“Narcissa is welcome here at any time. We will protect her. Lucius will not be able to touch her.” Albus steepled his fingers, his serious tone reverberating through the room.
“He will make trouble. This is a tremulous time and I fear what he might do.” The younger man sighed deeply.
Dumbledore spoke. “We will not underestimate him, but I will not turn your mother away.”
They used the next hour to make plans for her extraction from the Manor, and escape to Hogwarts.
“I will owl you when I find out his plans.” Draco stood to leave but inhaled sharply and crashed into the chair grabbing his head.
Severus jumped forward and pulled Draco into the chair.
“What’s the matter!”
The Headmaster crossed around the desk and knelt beside the chair.
Draco drew in large mouthfuls of air as fire burned through his veins. Time slowed to a creep and he was very aware of the harsh uneven sound of his breathing. He heard a low voice almost a song, or chanting but softer than a whisper. It might have been the thundering of his heart. There seemed to be no feeling in his limbs, rather as if he were floating and they weren’t weighted down any longer. Roaring filled his ears and a few minutes passed before he could speak and even then it was raspy.
“My mate is in Hogwarts.”
