**DISCLAIMER** All characters etc. belong to J.K. Rowling and I am making no money from this. Don’t sue because I’m sure that I don’t have anything that you’d want anyway. The basic plot for the story was a challenge presented by ArienAstera.
Chapter Two – One Year Later
“Crucio!”
Hermione felt the curse hit her and she flinched briefly, forcing herself to focus all of her energy on resisting the excruciating pain that tried to course through her body. She opened her eyes and glared at Lucius Malfoy.
“Again.” The cold voice hissed.
Lucius pointed his wand at Hermione, “Crucio!”
This time she planted her feet firmly and when the curse hit her she didn’t even blink.
“Well done! Well done indeed my love. You are getting stronger every day, I am so proud of you!” Lord Voldemort stood from the chair he had been sitting in ane0slapped his hands. Hermione bounced over to take her place next to him, smiling at his praises.
Hermione stood next to Lord Voldemort and smirked at Lucius who was glaring at her.
She knew how much it pissed him off that a common ‘mudblood’ such as herself had gained the favor of Lord Voldemort and she rubbed his nose in it every chance she got.
“That will be all Lucius.” Voldemort waved the blonde wizard away.
Lucius stood for a moment before stalking out of the room, obviously irritated that he was being dismissed.
Voldemort turned and took Hermione’s hand, “Come love, sit with me, let’s eat.”
Although she had been here for a year, it still creeped her out when Voldemort touched her or called her by one of his pet names such as ‘love’ or ‘darling’, but at least she had stopped physically flinching. Sitting on the couch he conjured a tray of food and they ate together in silence.
Voldemort watched the young witch sitting across from him as she ate. At first Lucius had tried to dissuade him from choosing her, but he had known that she was the one. Despite being a muggleborn, she was extremely powerful, probably one of the most powerful witches he had ever encountered. Of course she was still learning to harness those powers, but she was close.
Voldemort had learned early on that despite Hermione’s thirst for knowledge she was often times strong-willed and stubborn. He was a bit taken aback at first at her outright boldness, even a little outraged. He was so used to everyone around him fearing for their lives, that when she hadn’t been afraid to look him squarely in the eye and tell him fearlessly what she thought, he had found it refreshing and rather amusing.
Voldemort knew that to properly train Hermione he would need to treat her with a certain amount of respect to fully gain her trust. Therefore, he refused to punish Hermione and made it clear to Lucius in no uncertain terms that he was not to lay a finger on her. Of course, she was to be taught all there was to learn about the Dark Arts and was repeatedly subjected to painful hexes and curses, but that was not punishment, that was a part of learning and she understood the difference.
Hermione had surpassed his expectations immediately, mastering her basic offensive and defensive spells within the first week. She impressed him regularly with her eagerness and abilities, never backing down when presented with a challenge. Lately, during her weekly duels with Lucius, she had been exhibiting an unusual amount of cleverness, striking him with extremely advanced spells, ones that Voldemort knew neither himself nor Lucius had taught her. She had been learning and practicing on her own and as he had watched her withstand the Crucio tonight, Voldemort knew that it was time to take her to the next level.
