Chapter Three
CHAPTER THREE
Arthur Weasley stood at the podium in the enlarged conference room of the Ministry of Magic fighting tears. His wife was at St Mungos and they still didn\'t know how to help her. He was the newly elected Minister of Magic and he still couldn\'t help her. He was presenting different medals to the participants of the battle on this day. He had already had to give his wife\'s name as a receiver of the Order of Merlin 2nd class. Ginny had accepted it in her stead, tears streaming down her face. How in the world was he going to be able to get through the next two names?
\"Arthur, I can do this for you if you want.\"
His deputy minister, Amelia Bones, whispered in his ear. Her hand was on Arthur\'s shoulder in support.
\"No, I have to do this for myself. I have to do this for them.\"
Amelia gently squeezed his shoulder and stepped back as Arthur picked up the first of the Order of Merlins 1st Class.
\"The Order of Merlin 1st Class is awarded posthumously to Charles Arthur Weasley.\" Arthur lost his voice for a moment as the tears started flowing from his dry, scratchy eyes. \"Accepting - accepting this honor for Charles is Frederick William Weasley.\"
Fred Weasley walked up the steps towards his father with sorrow in his eyes and accepted the ribboned medal. He paused behind the podium, cleared his throat and simply stated, \"I am honored to accept this medal for Charlie. He didn\'t want medals. He just wanted all of us to be safe. Thank you, Charlie.\" He turned and fled from the podium into the back area of the stage.
\"The Order of Merlin 1st Class is awarded posthumously to Ronald Dean Weasley.\" Arthur\'s voice again cracked as he spoke another son\'s name. \"Accepting this honor for Ronald is George Christopher Weasley.\"
George Weasley walked up the steps with the gait of an old, old man. He was dry eyed and looked out from the podium with a greater strength than he realized he had in him. \" I am honored to accept this for Ron. \" He turned and joined Fred in the wings of the stage.
Arthur continued to award the Order of Merlin 1st Class. Too many families were taking home medals instead of their loved ones today.
Arthur finally got through the last of the posthumously awarded medals. He was almost drained at this point and was functioning on automatic. He pulled himself up and allowed a small smile to show.
\"The Order of Merlin 1st Class is awarded to Minerva Irene McGonagall.\"
The awards went on. Severus Snape, Harry Potter and several others all receieved the Order of Merlin. All of their speeches were short and heart felt. During the awards banquet Snape slipped out of a side door and apparated to St. Mungo\'s.
He stood in the room of the four who were left. He walked over to Molly Weasley\'s side and gently touched her hand. The skin was warm, the pulse was strong, but there was no life in the hand. Her eyes were closed and would not be opened until morning by the nursing staff. They did not know if the four could sleep as such, but the eyes themselves benefitted from the rest. All of the \"automatic\" functions of the bodies seemed to be unaffected and with a little assistance were able to swallow, so it was not difficult to maintain all the outward signs of good health.
\"But what of their minds?\" Snape whispered to himself. That was the hardest part for him. To him the mind was foremost. He gathered his courage and walked to the farthest bed. She looked at peace. Did he have the right to pull her from that if he could? That was the double edged sword. Was she really at peace? The last memories she had were of an agonizing battle. Where friend and foe alike were killed in front of her eyes. Possibly the last thing she may have seen was Ron Weasley throwing himself in front of Snape as Lucius Malfoy cast the killing curse at him. Ron sacrificed himself that Snape could assist in the destruction of Voldemort.
\'If I am successful in bringing her back I wonder if she will be able to look upon me without thinking it should have been me instead of Weasley,\' he agonized silently.
