Heart To Heart With Snakes

‘Complaining is good for you as long as you’re not complaining to the person you’re complaining about.’
Lynn Johnston (1947-?), For Better or For Worse, 11/06/03

A bell echoed through the halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry announcing the end of another school day.Minerva McGonagall watched her students collect their things and hastly retreat from the Transfiguration classroom. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched a small group of seventh year Slytherins procrastinating in the far corner. Perhaps it was house bias or years of personal experience in dealing with the serpent house that caused the witch to keep an extra eye on those sorted into the shadowy house. Whatever it was, she strained to hear the students’ whispered conversation.

As though a formidable sixth sense warned them of the Gryffindor’s interest, the Slytherins retreated to the relative safety and isolation of the castle’s dungeons. Trailing behind the group, McGonagall caught one of the Slytherin’s eyes. “A moment of your time, Mr. Snape.”

Opal eyes darted briefly to the Slytherins before answering, “I’ll catch up.”

“Yeah, we’ll wait outside for you.” One said as they slowly crept out the door to hover in front of the threshold.

McGonagall followed the Slytherins to the door, closing it, she cast a quick locking and silencing charm. Turning to face the Slytherin, “how was your summer?”

Opal eyes narrowed suspiciously as he regarded the witch before him. His Slytherin mind analyzing the question over and over before answering her question. “It was acceptable, Professor.”

“I’ve noticed an improvement in your transfiguration skills, Mr. Snape. I take it you found my suggested reading material beneficial.”

“Yes, Professor.”

Picking up a worn leather book off of her desk, “perhaps you would be interested in this one as well.” Handing him the book, noticed the boy’s curious look at the title. “Just a little light reading, Mr. Snape.”

He raised an eyebrow at her and smirked, “thank you.”

“You may go now, Mr. Snape.” McGonagall said unlocking the classroom door.

He nodded as he tucked the book away in his bag and hurried out the door. Turning into the hallway, he hurried towards his house mates. “Hey what did McGonagall want?”

“Practice her pathetic interrogation skills,” he sneered. It always went over well to insult the professors and especially the Gryffindors in general.

Once back down in the Slytherin common room, he collapsed on the sleek couch in front of the fireplace. Stretching his lean frame out, Severus watched as his house mates started up a game up of chess. He briefly wandered which of his house mates would soon become his enemy after they departed Hogwarts and began their lives out in the real world. Sighing, Severus pushed all thoughts of the future from his mind.

“Have you read the Daily Prophet, Snape?”

“Yes, it’s a newspaper after all, quite common and easy to come by. One would think you had the intelligence of a Huffelpuff with the way you chose your words, Roiser.” Severus drawled, pretending he’d found something clinging to his school robes. Out of the corner of his eye, Severus savored the nervous twitch beneath the other boy’s cool mask.

\"One day, your tongue will cause you more trouble then your wand will be able to get you out of.” As he spoke, Rosier’s eyes narrowed at the pale boy lounging before him.

“Perhaps,” Severus said slowly, “but today is not that day.” He was absently aware of his body moving and the dagger concealed beneath his robes being drawn. Instead, Severus was suddenly aware of kneeling over Rosier, the dagger’s blade held against the boy’s neck. “My patience is wearing preciously thin with you. I suggest that you take my advice and leave me be, otherwise I won’t be held accountable...” Severus let the silence finish his sentence.

“You’re scaring the boy, Severus.”

Severus glanced over his shoulder, “that’s the whole point. He’s been bugging me for seven years and I’ve been very patient. Obviously, he lacks the small intelligence to take a hint and I’m forced to spell it out for this daunderhead, Illianya.” Severus let his voice drop to a low hiss as his gaze fell back onto the shaking form beneath him.

“But is he really worth Azkaban?” Illianya’s voice purred from behind him. “Potter and company possibly, but this miss-sorted Huffelpuff? Come on, Severus, who’s acting like a weak minded Gryffindor now?”

“I’m not in the mood for you to psycho-analyze me.” Severus sneered before abruptly standing and moving back to the couch. Slipping the dagger back beneath his robes, Severus settled himself down again with a sigh.

“Are you going to sit there and pout or are you going to tell me what’s on your mind?” Illianya said curling up on the other end of the couch.

“Snapes’ do not pout.” Sneering, “besides I have no intention of telling anyone anything.”

“Such the essence of the house, I can clearly see why you were sorted here. Anymore brooding and I think that I’ll swoon.” Illianya said laying her arm across her forehead and pretended to faint.

“Ever thought of a career on the stage? I’m sure the muggles would better appreciate your theatrics then I.” Severus sneered, looking into the roaring flames contained within the fireplace. He pointedly ignored the light charcoal skinned witch despite her persistence.

“Honestly Severus Snape! If this has anything to do with McGonagall’s cross-examination after class, who would better understand then us Slytherins?” Her eyes searched his impassive face for a clue to his thoughts, but as usual the Slytherin’s face was void of emotion and thought.

“As usual, there is nothing to say.” To emphasize his point, Severus stormed from the common room as his robes billowed behind him.

Illianya snorted, “Snapes’ don’t pout indeed!”

“I can’t wait until someone takes him down a couple of pegs. I only hope that I get to see it.” Rosier said glaring in the direction of the boy’s dormitory before smirking at his house mates.

“Careful Rosier, best not tell Snape to his face. Both Potter and Black are still Pomprey’s guests from their little skirmish last week.”

“Tobias is right, I overheard Professors McGonagall and Finnie talking about it.” Noticing the looks, “okay they were arguing. But I did hear that they’ll be stuck there for another week regrowing their bones.”

“Of course she is Nero. Gryffindor’s out it’s primary seeker and a beater on Thursday’s match thanks to Snape. Did you hear her screech at Professor Lung afterwards, when she heard that he hadn’t punished Snape.” Tobias said pushing a lock of auburn hair behind his ear. “She was absolutely furious with him for awarding fifty points for just being a true, cunning Slytherin.” Smirking, Tobias’ eyes swarmed with mirth.

“Wonder if that was what she wanted with Severus earlier.” Illianya said with hooded eyes.

“What are thinking, Soot?” Nero asked as he put away his charms book.

“What do you mean?”

“You got the ‘look’, doesn’t she Tobias?”

“Hmm,” he said absentmindedly.

“Nero, you could find a conspiracy even when its staring you right in the face.” Illianya said before slipping out of the Slytherin common room.

“Think that a gnome put her knickers in a knot.”

“”Maybe its that time of the months.” Tobias said before fleeing the room as a shower of pillows and cushions were thrown at him from the present female population.
