ON THE ROCKS part 3

THE PROFESSORS

"What were you thinking?" Snape asked as Thomas walked into his bedchamber.

Thomas shrugged, and sat on the edge of the bed. "We really weren't. At least, not until after you and Harry left."

"Alright then, what made you lose all thought, and start kissing a student?"

"Draco started coming to me about a week ago. He wanted someone to talk to about his relationship with Harry. We talked for a bit, about Harry and you mostly, comparing boyfriends and the like. Horrible of us to do, I know, but we both needed someone outside of our relationship to talk to. I told Draco that he could come to me anytime he needed an ear to talk to. He's actually been coming a lot over this past week. It started out as just talking, Severus, we didn't mean for it to happen."

"So you keep saying. What happened next?"

"Draco had been questioning his relationship with Harry. A lot of what he said frightened me, and made me start questioning our relationship. Last night, I don't remember why, he started to cry. I went to comfort him"¦"

"And we came in on you "˜comforting' Malfoy?"

"He just looked so beautiful laying there in my arms, face covered in tears. I had to do something to make him feel better."

"And a little kiss felt right."

Thomas looked cross. "You know, this is hard enough to tell without the comments from the peanut gallery."

"Sorry. Continue."

"Yes, I kissed him then. Not the *ahem* kiss that you saw, just a peck. He actually kissed me again, and, well, you saw the rest."

"Unfortunately." Snape stood, walking to lean against the wall. "How can we make a relationship work with this in our past? How do I know that you and Malfoy wont sneak out and do something like this again?"

"Severus, I love you, I really do. But is it the type of love that we thought it was?"

"What do you mean?"

"When Draco and I were talking, he said that there was always a strong connection between Harry and himself. At first, they both thought that it was hate, then realized that it wasn't. Naturally, they thought that it was love, since the two are so closely related. Draco thinks now that maybe it was love, but mostly lust. The lure of the forbidden. It was love, but not the love they thought."

"So you think that our relationship was the same thing? We went out because you couldn't tell if you loved me or hated me?"

Thomas stood, and glared. "That's not what I meant! Don't try to twist my words."

"I don't understand Thomas."

"When I kissed him, it felt like a part of that was missing was finally back. I don't feel that way with you. With you I feel comforted, safe. Like I'm with my best friend, and I know you'll save me from everything. When I'm with Draco, I feel like I'm with a lover."

"This is so fucked up."

"I want to be with you, Severus, I really do. But after last night, I can't help but think that maybe we aren't meant to be together after all."

"Well, we definitely can't continue this. You cheated on me, and I"¦"

"And you what?" Thomas stepped closer to Snape, narrowing his eyes. "What did you do?"

"Last night, Harry followed me to my rooms. I cleaned up his hands, and then." Snape sighed. "I guess I just let everything out. After a good cry, I just let lust take over."

"You slept with a student?" Thomas almost shrieked.

"So did you." Snape shot back.

"Oh yeah."

Snape sat on the bed. "This is way too messed up."

"I guess we're through."

"Yeah."

"So what now?"

"We can't exactly go out with our students. We'd both get fired, they could get expelled."

"So what, we wait a few months for them to graduate?"

"We just pretend none of this ever happened."

"I can't do that Severus. I think Draco is my soul mate. I can't just forget about him."

"Try."

"Have you no feelings at all? You don't know what I'm going through! I love him Severus, I can't just say, "˜thanks for the fuck, hope I never see you again.'"

"How do you know that this will work out?! You said that you thought you loved me, how do you know that what you feel for Malfoy is love. What if it's what the two of us had?"

Thomas moved to the bed. "Who are you trying to protect Severus? Me, Draco, or Harry?"

"I'm not protecting anyone!" Snape stood, walking away from Thomas.

"Do you love him Severus?"

"Who?"

"Harry."

"How could I love a little Gryffindor brat like him? He's irritating, and I hate him."

"Severus"¦."

"You don't know what you're talking about Thomas."

"I don't? I don't think that you know what you're talking about."

"What do you mean?"

"Why did you sleep with Harry?"

Snape closed his eyes, trying to recall his early morning thoughts. "We both had broken hearts. We just took comfort in each other's misery. We were just waiting for the two of you to realize that you belonged in our arms. It was just one night."

"Why do you fight yourself so much?"

"I'm not fighting myself!" Snape turned on Thomas. "Do you know what we did last night? How many rules and laws we broke? Thomas, it isn't right what we did."

"How can something that feels this right be wrong?"

"They have every right to tell Albus what happened. Potter's been looking for a reason to gat me fired."

"He wouldn't tell. You know him better then that. Severus, why can't you see what's in front of you? I've been trying to get you to realize that you do have feelings." He smiled wryly. "You see how well I've succeeded."

"I don't have any feelings."

"I think you do. And I think that you love Harry."

Snape sat on the bed, head in hands. "It's no use." He said softly. "The boy hates me."

Thomas sat next to him. "I don't think Harry is the type of person to sleep with someone he hates."

"We could get fired for this."

"They'll graduate in a few months. That's not long to wait. No one has to know that this happened."

"They won't decide to break up."

"Yes they will. Draco had been thinking of breaking up with Harry for awhile."

"It'll kill Harry."

"He's a strong boy, I think he can take it. Besides, he'll have you to talk to."

"Because we all know that I'm so good at comforting people." Snape almost rolled his eyes.

"Any more doubts?"

"Yes. This wont work."

"But what if it dose? "˜To love and win is the best thing. To love and lose, the next best.*' Come on, lets go talk to
the boys."

"What should we tell them?"

"That we would like to continue a relationship as soon as they graduate."

"That also gives them time to decide that they might not want to date us."

"If you want to look at it that way."

There was silence as they walked out of the dungeon.

"How did we end up in this mess?" Snape asked softly.

Thomas smiled. "We have human hearts. We fell in love."

"I hate love."

Albus smiled at them as they entered the Great Hall.

"Why do I have the odd feeling he knows?" Thomas asked.

"I'd be surprised if he didn't." Snape answered.

Draco and Harry walked in, smiling. Thomas moved quickly to talk to them.

"Draco, could I speak to you alone?" He asked rather timidly. He glanced at Harry, who just smiled at him.

"Sure." Draco answered.

"Follow me Potter." Snape sent his best glare at Potter who didn't react, save for a sigh.

Snape and Thomas led the way out of the room. Gryffindor and Slytherin students watched and hoped they weren't loosing too many points, but one pair of blue eyes watched with a sense of satisfaction.
